Whisky

The meet was at my gaff. Had an empty for the weekend!
“Had an empty”.
:gigglle:

There’s an expression from a different age group 😆

Hey Sancho, are you old enough to be drinking alcohol?

I mind ‘having an empty’ for a couple of weeks when my folks went off on holiday.
Party time.
Must have been about twenty empty bottles and over a hundred empty tins which had to be disposed of.
Luckily some good mates agreed to come along on the Friday before my folks came home on the Saturday.
We had one last blow-out……. Then my parents came back a day early.

We came back from the pub to see a familiar car parked outside, and several cardboard boxes full of empties.
😱

Nice visit to Scotch Malt Whisky Society Bath Street today, great venue many similarities but just not the same as Queen Street or the Vaults. Great service, quality drams and nice food but the boy hated idea of us buying a bottle (and paying the storage)! All the same well looked after; just not as homely as the Vaults (OG) or Queen St.

What kinda whisky is it? Strathspey?
Made in the highest and coldest working distillery in Scotland, with water from a loch at 2000 feet, Dalwhinnie whisky thrives on extreme conditions – creating a liquid as sweet and accessible as its highland home is remote.

No other distillery may use the water from Lochan na Doire-uaine – "Loch of the green thicket" – a gathering of pure snowmelt and rainwater high in the Drumochter Hills. That might be why Dalwhinnie Scotch is the only Highland whisky to offer a combination of clean and accessible, malty-sweet taste with a smooth and smoky warmth.

When it was purpose-built in 1897, the distillery was first called Strathspey. Perhaps looking to distinguish their already distinctive whisky, the owners soon changed the name to Dalwhinnie when production started in 1898. It means “Plain of Meetings” in Gaelic, a reference to the location at a junction of old drove roads, between two mountain ranges. Though beautiful and ancient, the site is not without its drawbacks: a fire in 1934 caused a four-year closure, with rebuilding hampered by bitterly cold winters and twenty-foot snow drifts.

On the box of the Dalwhinnie Winters Gold it suggests keeping it in the freezer. Is this a thing? Thoughts!

I'd dae it. Sounds good. For my first few years of whisky drinking I'd always have it room temp, nae ice, nae water, as its meant to be etc. Over the last few years though I've changed to having a single ice cube in it. Sacrilege, how can ye, etc etc. Don't care, like it cold!

Guilty too!! Often take a notion for a dram with ice… don’t tell anyone!!

My local offie recommended this weird thing. Looks like a hard metal LP cover so at least different that way.

But the label is marginally more tasteful than the contents although it ain't the worst I've had.

Shouldda known when the guy told me it was a mix of two separate malts... 😵

It wasn't, was just one!

Quite smoky and peaty but not quite subtle enough overall for the price imo.

Get yourselves Whisky stones 👍

Perfectly acceptable, as is a dash of water, as some distillers I've met will concur. I personally prefer ice as the flavour 'sweetens' as the ice melts
Somebody suggested Cu Bocan recently . I bought a bottle off Amazon and it is excellent .Great shout, thank you!

A daft 19 yo me was at a family home leg stag up north (good few years ago). Ended up back at my uncles house and he asked if I’d like a whisky. Can’t remember what I picked but he had very expensive taste and I asked for coke in it.. he stopped, turned and looked at me and said “right, you can have water or ice or I’ll have that back”; I apologised, asked for both an never looked back. I laugh thinking back on it but I always remember his glance back at me was as if he was going to string me up for suggesting it.. and rightly so!!! Silly, naive and uneducated me 😂 wouldn’t dream of such sacrilege now!!

Well Gin is decent with ice but if you don't have ice then it's nice and chilled coming from the freezer. I usually drink it straight as well.

Have you tried whisky stones? I keep a couple in the freezer - cools the whisky without diluting it.

Nooo dear chap it is to stop them from mugging you out of jealousy. 🙄
