Little things that annoy you.

A Moretti is around the £6 mark in Edinburgh most places.

We couldn't find the wee Irish bar thats just a normal boozer.

Ah but that's London prices. It's around £6 odds in the centre of Edinburgh though.

I'm meeting my mate on Saturday though he knows the decent Irish boozers around the area.

In the Queen's Park area. Near the tube and Kensal Rise overground.

We were in the Whippet Inn (fnar fnar).

But hitting SheBu on Saturday at some point to try and catch the Hibees game.

AND pick up this beauty....

I was only 16 though so idea what it was when I could legally drink

Hope the multi millionnaire will get through Christmas Findlay. My thoughts are with him and his family at this testing time.:candle:
Remember the farmers when your digging intae yer Christmas Dinner. Clarkson was a millionaire before he was a farmer, most farmers arnae multi millionaires , they're land and asset rich and cash poor.
Clarkson supporting farmers is a bit more realistic than multi millionaires like Starmer supporting the working class.
Clarkson is a farmer and Starmer isnae working class

Yes he was. Think daddy clarkson had something to do with Paddington Bear iirc.
Most farmers arnae multi millionnaires, but most farmers willnae be paying half the normal Inheritance Tax, interest free over 10 years.;))
Clarkson supporting farmers is realistic because he is a farmer. Did you wonder why he went into this?

Clarkson being a farmer and Starmer no being is neither here nor there.

You think Sir James Dyson shouldnt pay inheritance tax on his estate now that hes moved from hoovering yer yard tae farming. That (currently) £23,000,000,000 should be exempt.?

Quite happy to be correctly but the last I heard was that the top 4% will pay this.

So aye I will be quite happy eating what I eat, no matter what day it is.

That isnae what I meant , clarkson, being a farmer has mair gravitas speaking for farmers than starmer , who isnae working class has speaking for the masses.
If farming land is inherited then sold for profit then absolutely inheritance tax should be paid but if it’s handed down to the next generation to continue farming it should be exempt.

Still dunno the point your making re your first sentence.

Respect your point of view, i feel differently. This is hitting the super rich. Its fair that they have to pay like everyone else.
Whether you like it or no, the people of England (you know, the masses), voted for Starmer and his party.... to speak on their behalf. Dont worry though, the Tories, or a bad reincarnation of them will be back fairly soon :54:

Thanks for your reasoned reply.
A, I've never voted tory , and
B, the masses didnae vote for starmer, they just didnae vote for anybody else

As I've pointed out elsewhere, Clarkson has openly admitted he bought his farm to avoid IHT, so you'll forgive me if I have absolutely no sympathy with his "plight". He's been a "farmer" for about 10 seconds, and has turned it into a fucking TV show.

Spot on.

He’s not speaking out for himself though. If you watch that show, and you should it’s very good, he constantly makes the point that it’s easy for him because he’s minted and because he makes tons of dosh from his tv show about farming.

But what he demonstrates very convincingly is that the money raised from the farming itself is derisory and life is brutal for his peers who aren’t media multi millionaires.

And he made this point to his interviewer from the labour party BBC, but who ignored it in favour of trying to gotcha him with reference to said article, and expecting him to coin a new budget on the spot.

Hasnt aggie simply pointed out that he has openly stated that he went into the farming game for tax avoidance?

Hasnt it been explained that its these multi millionnaires, sometimes billionnaires are going to be hit the most. Is the 10year interest free option available to others with large value estates not farming do you know?

Nice use of the strikethrough option.

Is there a way to tax the super wealthy which doesnt spout some outrage from the poor, do you know?. Should Sir Hoover not be taxed on his £23b fortune via this route? (i presume your against inheritance tax in principle - which is another story)

I only have a mild interest in this, as Im unlucky enough not to get anywhere near being taxed on this. I am taxed though on all that i earn and all the food and drink i buy and everything i use, and my insurances and all my travel. Its a tough gig. If i had £23b tucked under the mattress, i wouldnae be arsed if like 10% was taxed, because my family would still be multi billionnaires.

And I’m pointing out that that is not the basis on which Clarkson is pontificating on this issue. To paraphrase the great Peter Mandelson; I’m intensely relaxed that the point will not be lost on Aggie.

Explained by whom? Do you mean the apparently clueless take from number 11 or the view from the governments specialists at DEFRA, who agree with the farmers that the excel lads are wrong ?
Nice use of the strikethrough option.
Thanks EGers. Appreciation from a fellow artiste is always the most rewarding kind.

I’m not against inheritance tax when it targets vast financial empires, not at all. Im against it - for example - targetting family home that have been inflated into the bracket by our bonkers economy. Even more so, while heirless city swingers remain unaffected; lifetimes of spending on themselves and not investing in society’s future leaving no one to bequeath to. Sometimes I think I’m the only socialist left on this board EGers :coffee1:

The same applies here in broad principle. I’m really not that enthused by the distressed sale of small family farms, to be hoovered up (see what I did there?) by Dyson style operators who can shrug off the tax issue or pay it from what they find down the sofa.

I think there are ways to target the super wealthy. For a start we could not run the whole country, migration etc in a manner which makes them even wealthier and rooks everyone else. I expect one of your wee down thumbs might be earned there. Nevertheless that’s the reality and, speaking as the boards last remaining socialist, I think capitalists need to own that.

On targetting tax they could, oh I dunno, taken guidance from the government department that focuses on farming. Does that sound outrageous and provocative ?

If you had 23b you’d be even more the target labour voter than you are as a member of the public sector workforce. The latter is not to jibe at you but it’s worth keeping in mind in the context of the us and them politics labour favour.

I was born with concrete under my feet and have no skin in the farming game either. However I can imagine who brutally hard it is, and possessed of basic arithmetical competence I can see the assets versus income problem that has eluded experienced bank junior admin staff economists.

And frankly, breaking family businesses who simply want to pass on the land from which they have made a modest living from back breaking toil, and which serve the country’s interests, seems particularly obnoxious to me from an urban elite whose core demographic is selfish, non contributing city swingers.

Dyson and the big boys will be rubbing their hands. Pegging slave labour rates for farm hands and shipping more in as required will soon take care of it, while there will be rich pickings as family businesses are forced to sell.

I remember In the late 70s saying if the price of a pint went above £1.20 I'd cut back. Now it's 4 times that and I've drastically cut back. No wonder so many pubs are shutting.

He was still only pointing out what he pointed out... and what he pointed out was simply a fact about clarkson. He probably hasnt watched the old goats latest tv whizz
Explained by whom? Do you mean the apparently clueless take from number 11 or the view from the governments specialists at DEFRA, who agree with the farmers that the excel lads are wrong ?
My understanding of the whole palaver was that the change will not affect the majority of farmers, and estates worth up to £3,000,000 can still be passed on completely free of this tax, where the inheritance tax does apply, farmers will still pay 50% less than everyone else, that heirs can spread this 50% less than everyone else over 10yrs interest free.
Thanks EGers. Appreciation from a fellow artiste is always the most rewarding kind.
Please, i wouldnt dream of exalting myself to be on par with yourself. Its an aspiration likes.... we can all dream. Still, loving your barbed digs at auntie beeb, anything to smash the state i say👊

Yes, the wanker has spent arount £500,000,000 to save paying into UK plc coffers

I think there are ways to target the super wealthy. For a start we could not run the whole country, migration etc in a manner which makes them even wealthier and rooks everyone else.
So what could these ways be? It would seem daft to me to meke them wealthier and rook everyone else, i agree.
I expect one of your wee down thumbs might be earned there.
The thumbs down on the other thread was your silly take (imho) and totally circular stance in reply to iirc bossies post. Sorry its a wee thumbs down, the bounce doesnae do big thumbs down.:coffee1:

:gigglle:👊 Fight the power.

Oooft, that socked it to Starmer and co. Bloody reds!. Youve still not said how we can tax them without all the palaver. You have tho' said a few things about what not to do.
If you had 23b you’d be even more the target labour voter than you are as a member of the public sector workforce. The latter is not to jibe at you but it’s worth keeping in mind in the context of the us and them politics labour favour.
If i had £23b, id happily give my share to the country i was born in and made my fortune in, and my off spring would still be in the top 1% of the 1% and be fabulously wealthy. So i would be just dandy about labour targeting me.
I didnt take the 2nd part of the first sentence as a jibe, i wasnae aware that they were targetting me. Can you show your working on that specific point you have made.
I was born with concrete under my feet and have no skin in the farming game either. However I can imagine who brutally hard it is, and possessed of basic arithmetical competence I can see the assets versus income problem that has eluded experienced bank junior admin staff economists.
Fabulous strike through work again. mind, its no easy for the rest of us, perhaps the princes who stay in Bounce Towers. Its a tax avoidance loophole in all of the major farms in Britain, the super waelthy, glad they are trying to close, your correct though, as with all, the devil is in the detail.
And frankly, breaking family businesses who simply want to pass on the land from which they have made a modest living from back breaking toil, and which serve the country’s interests, seems particularly obnoxious to me from an urban elite whose core demographic is selfish, non contributing city swingers.
thats just a daft dig at labour😆

Dyson and the big boys will be rubbing their hands.
Nae change there. Sooooo, how do we tax their extreme wealth?
Pegging slave labour rates for farm hands and shipping more in as required will soon take care of it, while there will be rich pickings as family businesses are forced to sell.
Thats been going on since the first incarnation of inheritance tax was introduced over 50yrs ago. Thats why theres so many huge farms they were exempt!
