Putin has possibly been surprised by the attitude and resilience of the Ukranian people, and more surprised by the attitude of his own people.
Feed them tripe on the radio and TV , but there is a whole cyber world with information.
 
Zelenski asking people to come from anywhere to help. Good chance for all those gun toting yanks to have some real war games Almost tempted to go myself but got shot too many times with slug guns when I was younger .at over 6 feet have always been too big a target 🤫

Hear alot of Polish factions have crossed in to Ukraine to fight, Polish people a pretty concerned as to what happens after Ukraine falls in the years ahead
 
Germany sending serious anti tank weaponary. First time modern Germany has ever sent weapons into a warzone.

Sounds like the Russians are not getting the quick lightning victory I think they were counting on. I don't think Putin thought the Ukrainians would stand their ground like this. Reports of large numbers of tanks heading towards Eastern Ukraine. Sucking in the whole army then, with western weapons and continuous replenishments of kit and Ukraine still has air control..... Maybe Putin really has made the mistake to finish him domestically.

Was talking to my Polish boss tonight who says that historically Poland were terrible to Ukraine, but that in recent years they have a close bond, plus Poles generally hate Russian governments

Great article you've found there mate. One comment. Said a while back I reckoned the war would start as soon as the olympics finished to appease China. Now Putin thought he would attract the Ukranian army towards the Easter regions whilst sending paratroopers into Kiev for a lightening strike to take the government out and install his puppet government. He has seriously underestimated the levels to patriotism Ukranians have to their country and the level of bravery the parliament and opposition have shown in the face of aggression. I would not be surprised if Ukraine soon have one million armed troops and civilians, both male and female. They will never forget this

I am guessing the Ukranian Police will be issued rifles as well?

As an aside, wonder if they will release prisoners and arm them as well. They need somewhere to keep the Russian soldiers they capture.

Not sure about your numbers there Davy, you may be right, however.....As Socialist Appeal said prior to the invasion.

The Socialists of Russia killed 4 million Ukrainians not that long ago. They know Putin will "punish" them for daring to fight so they have to. Hundreds of years the Ukrainians have waited to have a country.

When Russia starts being less discriminate with who their targets are, there will be much bigger problems.

Already hit a tower block and there's video of a hospital building being fired on.
Thermobaric weaponry being mentioned today, that's horrific stuff.
All good Germany, Holland and us giving them more weaponry to fight back, but Russia has far greater firepower.

Not sure Putin will want to be seen to lose this campaign he's started, it could get real bad, real quick.

Socialism came from Marx and Engels (probably Fabians too?). Lenin ran with it. The only way it can work because humans are messy is with force.

Stalin used the convenient ideology in place in order to control and run his empire. It worked. Fear alone is not enough, Socialism/Communism is a coherent philosophy and ideology that is really useful as you can trap people with propaganda and a whole way of life. The only thing that will ever happen is just replacing one elite with another as in the Nomenklatura.

Capitalism needs reigning in and regulating and the excesses corrected hard, you will not find me arguing about it, and natural monopolies should be nationalised as long as there is proper investment and organisation. The issue is that a welfare state, free at the point of use healthcare (it is always fun trying to explain this to Americans, it is not free, you just don't pay an insurance company).

I really am not sure what you are loking for in a s(S)ocialist state? Do you think people will all come together and share equally and all be lovely with each other? It is interesting that the old Communist Paries called themselves Socialist Parties and now Socialist is an insult like Communist.

In Chechnya and Syria they were not that bothered about hitting civilian targets. Yeah those thermobaric weapons look designed to flatten cities.

Anyone still going to defend Putin? There is no moral grounds for this. If previous behaviour is a guide he is going for civilians to try and speed up surrender.

Annoys me so much of the news is discussion about how sanctions will hit the west and that the price of fuel will go up. Big deal! We have lived through several recessions, people are dying and losing their jobs, homes, family and country...hopefully not the latter 2 so much...I am prepared to take a bit of financial hardship to send a strong message to Russia

Got to concede in some ways they are...openly arming Ukraine and having trained them for years. But I get the feeling someone is going to bump the mad one off from inside Russia, probably when the generals all get together.

But it is likely he is deperately trying to get the Russian population on his side
