Tv series

Just started the Lord of the Rings series, not bad
The Rings of Power? Wait until you get to series 2, which looks like there was a load of screenwriters who never spoke to each other and a producer who just squeezed all their ideas in.

Looks utterly dreadful. I think what Tolkien meant to say...

Just got round to watching the first episode of the second series of Sherwood. Friends told me I'd be aware of the story I was based on as soon as I watched. For a long time, the notorious Gunn family, headed by ruthless brothers, Colin and David Gunn ran the 'Bestwood Cartel' on the estate of the same name on the outskirts of Nottingham. They mainly dealt in drugs and extortion and featured in a book about local gangers called 'Hoods' - a study in the history of local organised crime. Colin Gunn is currently banged up for 35 years and his brother now lives away from the city.

The story focuses in particular on the gangland killing twenty years ago of the Sterlands, a middle-aged mum and dad who became tragically inplicated in the story. The story was covered in the TV series 'Murdertown' presented by Emilia Fox.

We watched the whole of series 2 over 2 nights. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not sure what you have already seen but I would suggest
Homicide - Life on the Street
The Wire
The Shield
Six Feet Under
Our Friends in the North
The Sopranos
Edge of Darkness
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy / Smiley's People
Justified
Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
GBH
Boys from the Blackstuff
Mad Men

That should keep you going. 😉
That
Justified 👍

It's a fabulous programme. Most people don't know about it. Raylan Givens is the coolest lawman on TV. Brilliant dialogue courtesy of Elmore Leonard. And Walton Goggins is fantastic as his best friend/arch-enemy Boyd Crowder. It's a show to watch with your other half as the ladies seem to like Timothy Oliphant for some unfathomable reason...

Oh and the theme tune is cool as 😎

Anyone watch Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing? A lovely, life-affirming little show. Two old friends chillaxing by various rivers and reflecting on life and mortality. All against a background of 4K UHD nature porn.

Yea it's pretty good. Bob Mortimer is one of my favourite tv people. I'm reluctant to say comedians as I only know his stuff with Vic Reeves. Most of which I can't stand. Catterick wasn't bad and his appearances on would I lie to you are side splitting.
He's had some very serious heart issues.

A truly heart-warming programme, whether or not you like fishing. I’m currently also enjoying the second of Mortimer’s books with the third awaiting.

His autobiography is very good. He comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke. I didn't realise how painfully shy he has always been.

I must make the time to have a look at this. The way you describe it is what I imagined it to be. One where the talking is the important thing but with some fabulous backdrops and environments.

That's it in a nutshell, Stu.

Just have one episode to go in Sherwood. The story is good, if nicked heavily from real life stuff ,but I find the accents a bit bogus and bit off-putting occasionally. Basically, they're over-egged at times and people rahnd 'ere yooth don't so much talk that way any more. In particular, David Morrissey's otherwise excellent portrayal of the character DCS Ian St. Clair and Ria Zmitrowicz as Lisa Waters, 'The Sheriff of Nottingham's, accents swerved into what I could only describe as sink estate1950s-1960s Nottm. It's nit-picking I'll admit, but it lost its authenticity for me at those moments. The DCS in the meeting shouting 'Nah!' (meaning now) and so on. Yes, it's Nottingham, but not generally as we know it now, especially for that class of people in those kinds of jobs.

Also, I felt one of the fascinations of the previous Sherwood series was the link to the Robin Hood legend which was done well I thought. Real life crimes with a murderer using a crossbow etc. at the time of the miners strike. The criminals in the series hiding away in part of what was once Sherwood Forest which really did happen. It was a curious link with and reflection of the legend. In this series, I felt they tried to weave legend into modern day again but it felt a little shoe-horned in. Yes, there still is a Sheriff of Nottingham but that role isn't what was depicted here. It's a less formal role purely for promoting the city and it's leisure and facilities, nowt to do with wrong-uns. Hell, I knew the last Sheriff of Nottingham, he used to drink in a pub where I go. He's a Glaswegian and big Celtic supporter!

I really enjoyed his Athletico Mince podcast.

@egb_hibs see, I did join the 21st century there!

Started watching the McMahon docuseries on Netflix. I used to watch the old WWF as a kid, it's quite an eye opener.
Haven't seen it yet. Without spoiling, is this another oh-no-there-goes-another-good-memory moment? First thing I got into on 'Sky Channel' in NL in mid-80s.

Preferred first series, the safe house wisny very safe wis it . One of these times we’ll have a series where the police aren’t total incompetents 😩

So far not really. I'm at the episode talking about the Montreal screw job and WCW battle which I didn't know too much about. Definitely worth a watch if you grew up watching the old superstars like Brett Hart, Hogan and all that. It'll be interesting when it gets to the attitude era.

Lost was huge back in the day. I remember the very last episode was broadcast exactly at the same time as the US which was like 5am in the morning on Sky One. Stayed up to watch it and 10 mins in ended up falling asleep :giggle.
Just coming to the end of season two of Dexter , very good in a weird sort of way
It only gets better. More Dexter coming in the future.

Do that loads of times with UFC and WWF when I was a bairn.

Ditto. No it wasn't and that's exactly how it was in real life for the poor folks that were targeted and shot, down at the east coast. Two perfectly innocent people slain in a senseless killing, partly due to the police fcuking up.

YouTube algorithms🙄... Just been informed Tony Christie - 80-odd - is touring. I YouTubed him. Likely because Christie did the theme song for "The Protectors", the algorithm suggested the theme from "The Persuaders." Tony Curtis & Roger Moore being misogynistic and un-PC in expensive settings. Like an upmarket Renton and Sick Boy, with money. The theme tune is great. I recall the show itself being so bad that it was great. Not seen it in 40 years. Very tempted to click on a link. Avoided the temptation so far.

I watched a couple of seasons of Lost but it just became so repetitive, a bit like The Walking Dead and to a certain extent Breaking Bad. On the cusp of success or conclusion only for some twist of fate a set back and start again.

I gave up on Lost when the coincidences started becoming too unreal to be believable.

Anyhoo - Solar System with Brian Cox is superb stuff.

Don’t watch much telly, but old news though it probably is, I just watched the latest slow horses and it’s the best yet.

Also been rewatching True Detective Season one with one of the sprogs to whom I had been commending it. Fuck me, it’s still brilliant. For me behind only the Sopranos and the Shield and I’m not even sure of that, given they are multi series epics and hard to compare with a self contained story.
