Rumour.

The fee to bring Boyle back was over a million. Maybe not a direct fee payment, but in terms of coming to an agreement on what we were due from the original sale.
I'd imagine Youan too is a significant 7 figure investment.

And I actually think our club would pay a seven figure sum since the arrival of the Gordon's. They'd need to be absolutely as sure as you can be sure but for the right player they'd make the investment if they absolutely thought it was something that would give a return on the pitch now with real growth potential on selling on.

Ah fuck aye. Totally forgot about him 😂

No chance Youan is a million.

I'll believe it when I see it. If it does happen massive pressure on that player.

The fee paid, signing on fee, agent fee, salary & employer NI contributions. Too true it's a seven figure investment on a 3 year deal.

Magennis probably cost us a million.

Agreed. Fee to St Mirren 300K? Agent fees and signing on fees say 100K? And then 200K each year on salary & employer NI contributions. Then the deal on the balance on the contract unless it was a complete walk away break in the contract. But aye, easily seven figures.

Don't think I'd be against that.

Another experienced player. Couple hundred games under his belt and at a decent enough level.
Old enough to not be a project and young enough to get 2 or 3 good years out of him.

Aye. No entirely sure where Hibs see him play. I'd imagine he's left back but very versatile.

This will be another McDermott influenced signing...he will know all about him from his time at Reading.
We definitely need left-sided options.
Boruc seemed to impress everyone when he was on trial earlier in the year.

I'd go for left back too, but sounds capable from left back, left wing back, left mid and left wing if needs be.

Still has to perform better than Lewis to keep/take that spot.
Easier said than done, ask literally any Hibs left back in the last 10 years 😅

The Immovable object 😂

If the young laddie isn't given the opportunity to compete for the LB position with the legend I begin to wonder what's the point of having any youth structure at the club.

Why are we overlooking from those already inside the building? Most folk who watch our youth rave about the young left back Oscar Macintyre as being one of the most impressive. Surely he's the obvious competition for the legend that is Lewis Stevenson? And yet again we go looking for a journeyman option...

Is Oscar no among the ones going out to Airdrie or that?
First team football for someone has to be the next step. (Going by how we've been doing business)
I'd have had them all around the squad, but it seems to be loans out are the way just now.

I'm with you on it, posted at the same time as me.

I'd have them all here and sampling football.
I guess the argument is they can rack up 900 minutes in a season being brought through here. Vs playing 90 minutes a week for someone else on loan.

Maybe this season isn't the season for us to bring them on, last season left a bad taste for a few of us and another season experimenting (albeit with our own) maybe isn't the way.

I hope to see a couple of them this year though, surely...?

The thing is any young player has to be technically, physically and mentally ready to play first team football. They also have to be better than the current first term player if they’re going to start games.

It’s why so many go out on loan, it’s one of the only ways to fully judge them. Porteous and Doig went out on loan, showed they were ready, came back to Hibs and became regulars.

A very good young player but like a few, they seriously need to strengthen up… he would get battered like a fish from the local chippy.. if he gets on the right program to bulk up he could be the fish on a plate from a far more lucrative restaurant. He’s tiny

I can see why talented laddies are looking to move on from ER as I don't see any real pathway.

LJ spoke in January about giving youth an opportunity. Now I get and understand he was under pressure to get results etc but even looking at the substitute bench this calendar year tells you the pathway for youngsters is somewhat blocked...

Hibs seem to have an issue with this, none of the young lads ever look particularly ready to step up in terms of physicality.

My laddie has just turned 19. A year ago he was physically half what he is now. He's in the gym 3 - 4 times a week. Why are our young players not stepping up as you say? I find the whole Hibs youth lack of progress so frustrating!

And it was obvious it was happening about 2 months ago when we announced they were all away out on loan.
Before even having a clue who they'd be chasing for a place.

Said the same talking about Laidlaw before, offer him a contract but tell him he's still not getting a chance.. while other clubs are out there offering him a pathway. (Loans could be the path too, but there's a lot more opportunities out there if he moves)

I do as well, something really isn’t quite right in my opinion.

As you point out a year can make a big difference at that age level, but even considering that 20 year old Egan-Riley is an absolute unit compared to say Josh O’Connor.

Genetics in that case.

Look at Jude Bellingham, he's a monster compared to 95% of people his age.

Obviously that's not the case for everyone, there needs to be work done on them physically, but I guess there's a fine line between keeping themselves as capable footballers and piling on muscle at 17 year old when the rest of your body isn't ready for it.

Trying to think of other scottish players who were built up enough at that age and I'm only really coming up with the sheep shagging hun McRorie, he's a big lad.
Porto was strong, but even he said he needed his season at Edinburgh City to find that in him.

All our big boys play rugby?

It’s not about being massive per, just being physically ready.

McCrorie is a good example, Hickey at Hearts was ready from a young age, Lewis Ferguson… maybe it’s the way Huns are fed 😂

Think I seen your laddie the other day 📸

It's not just the physical strength thing albeit that is important, you also have to be mentally ready to cope with the pressures of first team football at our level. We are loaning out a number of youngsters just now to get them used to playing regular first team football against seasoned professionals, to see how they cope, how they deal with different situations in a match, how they cope tactically. Very few teenage players are ready to just move into first team football which is a massive jump for them. The pace of the game for starters is on a different level to youth football, then the physical side of it, then dealing with pressured situations and coping with a crowd getting on your back if things are not going well. So many factors come into it.

Over the years we have had some exceptions to the rule. Gordon Durie, Garry O'Connor, Kenny Miller, and a few others but even most of them had to be loaned out to get them properly prepared. Our current midfielder Josh Campbell has been many years at Hibs and it's only been last season where he has established himself in the first team. many youngsters fall by the wayside or end up playing at a lower level like Sam Stanton and Jamie Gullan. I know the club have high hopes for Oscar McIntyre and several others, but they will need to be nurtured properly in their development and they have to be willing to make sacrifices in their lives and work hard constantly improving their game. We will start to see the fruits of the academy work soon in my opinion.
