Peter Cormack RIP

Really sad news.
Peter stayed not too far from me and I used to let on to him when I saw him, and sometimes chat away to him.
Saw him just a month or so ago.
He was before my time when he was a great player for Hibs in that mid 6o's team,, though I saw him play regularly when he came back to the club.
A true Hibernian legend.

RIP Peter.

Feel very saddened by this news. Peter was definitely one of my boyhood heroes too. Not only for HIbs but I watched him at Forest too where he was basically in a declining team that he was too good for. Then along came Shankly and snapped him up of course.

Played 70-odd games at the City Ground and what a player he was. Scored a lot of his goals through his aerial ability, in fact he was an all-round player and could do pretty much anything. He was as hard as nails, could go past a man, good passer and finisher. Always remember the way he ran, on the balls of his feet which looked a little like a prance. Picked his legs up high behind him when running.

One of the best players Hibs ever had for sure. Wonderful footballer.

Rest in Peace, Peter

What a player he was………..had balance, poise and an elegance to match. Graced every Club he played for, a true Hibs legend.

RIP

I wonder if he was the only player to have played under both Shankly brothers?
A great quiz question.

The story went that when Peter Cormack was at Hibs when managed by Bob Shankly, Bill asked about Peter only to be told by Bob that Peter was good but not quite ready for Liverpool. So when Forest bought him Bill was watching his progress carefully and when Forest were relegated, and Peter scored their last goal in Division one at Everton, Shanks stepped in and bought him.

Corky was hugely well liked at Forest. Here's what a few there have to say about him:

--

I was absolutely gutted when he joined Liverpool.

My mum stitched number 10 on my first ever Forest shirt.

Remember his very distinct running-style - almost Bambi-like, as if he was running on his toes?

His first touch was impeccable and the weight of his passes equally so - very John Robertson-like in fact. It was a pleasure to have seen him in a Forest shirt, far too brief though it was.

I distinctly remember his goals and his black hair back then.

The very first time I saw Corky, I asked my dad 'Is that Georgie Best'?

He was lovely, silky player who spent an all-too-brief period of time at the City Ground.

Second only to Ian Storey-Moore in the fans’ affections.

I was gutted when he left, we lost our best player.

Nice tribute to Peter on the official site...apart from forgetting to mention that he was also an assistant manager at Hibs during Alex Millers first few years.
That’s my recollection of him, actually.

Think he moved on late in the 80s- can’t remember why or for where.

And not mentioning he was Hibs youngest ever goalscorer….until Jimmy O’Rourke took it three weeks later.

Pretty mental he scored his last goal nearly 18 years later

Two memories stand out amongst a lot.

49 years ago and can’t believe that with Liverpool v Hibs and I am kid and thinking Peter is a Hibby and will want us to win but far from it and he was full on in what were 2 amazing games. The Anfield match and recall the bus getting stoned by their fans and Peter being reflective on the pitch and am sure he had mixed emotions. Why we didn’t play Pat to counter Toshack baffles me to this day.

The 2nd, I always had a soft spot for Bertie Auld and that was due to this, I was told that Bertie Auld was the reason that Peter got the managers job at Thistle as they went in opposite directions.

Rest in Peace Peter and that’s some team The Hibs have in heaven

RIP Peter.

Before my time and reading some of the above I am reminded yet again that many of us have never seen the calibre of player in a Hibs shirt that our most mature (because few of us are spring chickens now) colleagues had the privilege to witness.

1000022663.jpg60 years ago Hibs rack up a 4-2 win over the Hundogs, with goals from Willie Hamilton my all time favourite player for the Hibernians, Pat Quinn, and a double from a young Peter Cormack.
I was there with several family members from Blackfriars Street, Little Ireland. We beat Real Madrid three days previous to this in which this very young guy scored in the 2-0 win, which I also was at.
If this wasn't enough for a young me, that less than ten years later an older me, watched the greatest game in history against the Merricks, with a couple of the Blackie Boys who attended the aforementioned games.

PS....I have argued using Cormack, O'Rourke and Stanton as examples when the ' too young to step up to Hibs first team' are in full flight.
Thank fuck others in the past ignored these gentlemen/ladies.
