Labour

Burnham pissing me off already, talking about having a 2nd parliament oop north and taxing state pension, which shouldnt be taxed as everybody says its a benefit, and labour cancelling building ships in favour of drones. Its a fuckin joke
State pension is taxed already as more and more pensioners are finding out with the personal allowance not being increased.

Those who have another pension the amount they receive as an old age pension is deducted from their personal allowance reducing the amount of that other income.

So it's already taxed.

There was chat of some jiggery pockery so that those on an old age pension only wouldn't pay tax or some such complications but just chat so far.

Hold on. The state pension is taxable income. Devolution is at least a reasonable discusdion and have you seen how recent conflicts have played out?

Recent conflicts?

It's unlikely the UK armed forces could be deployed to any great extent in a conflict. And indeed they weren't to any great extent.

The RNs nuclear attack submarines are all tied up needing fixed. A bit like our aircraft carriers one of which is normally broken down - they take turns each!

The RAF only has half it's attack aircraft air worthy at any one time.

The Army are still waiting on their ajax armoured vehicles among other weaponry.

Do you the Scotland is due a rebate on it's GERS contribution? 😉

Have you noticed the wars in the Ukraine and middle East? I take it you support an increase in defence spending to address your concerns?

Sorry Jack - that doesn't make any sense. GERS is a document produced by the Scottish Government. So how would a rebate come into it?
The contribution for defence is decided by the government in Westminster, in among all the other allocated figures.

You do know GERS is broadly two parts?

Actual expenditure done by the Scottish Government and the other estimated and allocated by the Westminster government.

Yes. So what rebate?

Yes. So what rebate?
Well the armed forces are not functioning as they should. Below par would be generous.

Scotland is therefore not being defended as one might expect.

Scotland is paying top dollar for a service that is not being provided.

Do you think Scotland should get a rebate from GERS?

It doesn't work that way (which you know). Scotland isn't billed for anything. It's apportioned a share of UK spending. There is no cash transaction.

Do you think we should spend more on defence?

We both know that but is it right?

It might concentrate minds.

More aircraft carriers, for submarines to be tied in port, aircraft that fly, at best, 50% of the time, armoured vehicles that don't perform, no.

Lazers, on their way, drones (all types*), yes.

Having said that perhaps the armed forces already get enough but squander it on projects that should have been binned years ago.

* Lots of different types of drones are already being developed and built in England. Apparently the warships due to be built in Scottish shipyards are to be cancelled to pay for this. Should be an easy decision for Westminster to make in the managed decline of Scotland.

Should Scottish taxpaywrs get refunds for all the delayed infrastructure projects? Or ill judged court cases? It might concentrate minds.

But you will next year if it goes over 12500.
Pension is £12547.00 currently. Personal allowance is £12570.00. If the pension went up by, e.g., 5% it would be £13174, meaning you would pay about a tenner a month in tax. assuming the threshhold remained the same.

Hardly the same.

Anyway what is your answer to the question your avoiding?

Why is it not the same? It directly impacts on the people of Scotland.

What's the question I'm avoiding? Is it the silly idea of a rebate on revenue and expenditure estimates? Are you actually being serious with that one?

Talking of avoiding queztions, do you want more spent on defence.

It was a hypothetical question for which you seem unable to answer despite giving hypothetical answers to many other questions.

If you had read my previous posts you would have seen my answer to defence expenditure.

It's an absurd comparison. GERS is an estimate of revenue and expenditure carried out by Scottish Government statisticians. It sets out revenues and expenditures in Scotland. Some of this will be by the UK Government and some by the Scottish Government . That's it.

There is no financial transaction whatsoever. The Scottish Government doesn't pay for defence. How could there be a rebate?

You must know this. By your logic the UKG could get a rebate for a failure to deliver infrastructure projects funded by the block grant. Or islanders because of ferry issues. They're much more real than your absurd hypothetical.

There's a per capita allocation of spending for defence in gers and last year it was £5.1b.

According to the Home Office illegal migrants have cost the tax payer around £4 billion in the last year, probably more than that in reality. It would be good if the UK government were as dedicated to homelessness here which is at record levels as they are at ticking boxes.

More of the same with Burnham. Pledged to rid Manchester of homelessness years ago, worse than ever now. Another master of the U-turn.

It was a hypocritical question.

Like most scenarios on here. I doubt either Government takes what the Bounce debates and turns it into policy.

A kinda discussion where posters can give and ask for views.

Good squirming though.

No squirming whatsoever. But in the spirit of asking for views, should the islands get a rebate from the Scottish Government because of failures in the ferry provision? If not why not.

Well you could keep on deflecting, asking different questions instead of you answering them ad infinitum.

In answer to your question though.

If I were a Scottish person wanting to take that course of action I'd probably wait for an English person to take the UK government to court for all their failures, including in the gender stuff you mentioned as a Scottish Governments failure, except it was based in UK law in the same way the Darlington nurses case was and £1.25m was spent in defending that UK law.

Hypothetically, if the Darlington nurses case (among many others) was won, the islanders would be in a very good position.

What's an English person taking the UK goverment got to do with the Scottish Government and ferries?

And the Darlington case wasn't following UK law - that's why the nurses won in court. So why would they get rebate from the UK Government?

And self ID was all the Scottish Parliament's work. That also failed in court, so not UK law. The Scottish Government also was determined to put men in women's prisons. They lost that in court too.

But given the Darlington nurses won their case against their employer, do I take it you now see a path for rebates from the Scottish Goverment to islanders? That appears to be what you are saying.

The Darlington case was based on the same UK guidance which Labour only recently updated.

Yes, if the English won a case it would set a precedent.

But not the law. The guidance was updated after the S ottish Government lost in the Supreme Court. I note you've shifted from the law to guidance. As you know it's the law that's paramount.

But I think you're saying the islands would have a case, but only if someone in England won a similar case? Why wait?
