News like this takes the wind out of your sails and for me brings back the memory of another Edinburgh fire fighter, Ewan Williamson, who died in a blaze at the Balmoral Bar in Dalry. It must take massive courage to do that job knowing that one day you could pay the ultimate price.

Firefighters have to be the bravest of the brave. My brother in law recently retired and worked with Barry at McDonald Rd, he'd never accept they were anything but 'just doing the job', but I'd have him by my side before anyone else in a tight spot.

Rest easy Barry, a genuine Hero.
