Israel

on Nigeria? tbh i was a bit perplexed by your point - happy for more detail on this - are you referring to Boko Haram/IS, Fulani or something else? if its the latter wikipedia summarises the massacres this year at ~500 people mostly Christian attacked for religious, ethnic and resources (herders vs farmers). my understanding from initial look is that some people in security forces have been complicit in those massacres (provision of arms, turning blind eye etc). If the UK can influence the govt to prevent that then great at face value that looks like a good thing - what do you propose?

It all adds up R. 62k this century (there's plenty sources if you dont like this one).
That's a good bit more than casualties between Israel / Palestine on that timeframe, and towers over it prior to the current war.

I'd suggest Britain exert pressures such as withdrawal of arms and military training, and cancellation of the core nigerian plank of Boris' migration strategy for example. If we can get 24x7 media coverage and tens of thousands of Britain's middle class onto the streets every weekend, perhaps we might influence the government to that end. What do you think?

The Americans seem to be edging towards action.

the latest post is from ME Eye showing a rabbi preaching genocide? Ryan and I have vastly different world views as you know - i'd expect condemnation of the hate preaching in the video just like i would with yon hook handed bam in Finsbury.
indeed. You weren't piqued at all by his use of it to declare (again) that the jews are the synagogue of satan? I'm fairly persuaded youd have picked up on similar in the case of captan hook, and Im not that sure Ryan's views are that different from yours on this topic, and indeed the general tenor of this thread. I expect he is clearer in his own mind where his ideas come from than others who have had the source mediated for them, but that's the main difference.

He has said much else besides on this thread and others and the silence is deafening from those otherwise hyper sensitive to race discrimination. By striking coincidence this is exactly like wider society.
be happy to debate the fringe story if you make an actual point rather than an accusation - same with statism and capital. all i'd say is that you caricature of Bakunin of the Isles is silly
You had an opportunity when the topic was live on the board and took the view that if a couple of comedians were too edgy for the fringe, you could live with it - a comment revealing on a number of levels, including how conformist and establishment the fringe is, on which note your implication was spot on.

Less admirable was the willingness to shrug at Juden Raus and indeed attempt to tie it into Israel, ignoring the woman I cited who afaik has not even scaled the heights of controversy of wishing an end to killing on all sides and attending a vigil for victims of 7/10.

Bakunin of the Isles was a gag about your libertarian socalist stance and its striking failure to align with positions taken, from 'pasaran? Please do' onwards.

Without trying to be pro anyone EGB. But do you believe that? Hamas wasn’t their people killed seems ludicrous, no genicide… 👀 … hamas in the aud queues to start sites getting fired at aid Queues?
Sounds like IDF political propaganda to me… say good things, blame others, and to Trump it all there is plenty food….. there can’t be plenty food if aid had been stopped.
You can’t tell me that you believe all that surely 🤷
Nae genocide happening in Gaza Stu, well none according tae some on here.

Why does it deem ludicrous that a mob of zealots who bang on about the glories of martyrdom and instill it in their population might be serious, especially given their actions again and again? I keep saying Hattie that we need to take brown people seriously. You and I might find such ideas ludicrous but they have their own minds and their own worldview, which isnt remotely like yours and mine.

"Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes."

Thats article 8 of Hamas' founding charter. Note that martyrdom is not 'something we are ready to accept' or the likes, but the 'loftiest of it's [Hamas'] wishes'

If you go google what Hamas bods say, the joy of parents of martyrs and the like, you might get a better handle on where they are coming from.

Its up to you what you believe. There are other British military sources who will give you similar in chapter and verse, but if you wish to believe that everyone not parroting the Hamas / anti Israel media line are IDF stooges, you are of course going to reach a foregone conclusion.

Here's another one from a war scholar. He takes a more rigorous approach than the shrill populism of the msm, but its worth a read.

Ps @Hattie per my original comment you responded to. I'm not suggesting these guys possess 'the truth' of what's going on. It's simply an on the ground perspective from other than the normal bias - that's not to say they will have no bias of their own.

Eh? The very same armed terrorists that EGB started in his post that are wanting their own people killed? The very same armed terrorists who are supposedly starving their own people?
Or the very same armed terrorists that are in aid queues deliberately causing bother so as folk get killed?
Is that the very same armed terrorists you say are fighting back for them 👀🤷
That’s a tad err nuts is it not 👀
Alright, calm down George Galloway.

You want a wee saucer of milk?

We know posters are entitled to their opinion but it saddens me to See some saying there is no genocide happening in gaza 🥲, what would it actually take to convince them 🤷‍♂️

Very simply Joe, for a genocide to take place.

I mean this is about the clearest point in this very murky topic.

The minute we see big percentage chunks of the Palestinian population disappearing through an extermination programme, I for one will be first to say 'there's a genocide taking place' - because that's what a genocide is.

People can redefine the term how they like but im going with the literal meaning of the word 'to kill a people' and its historic usage before language was adapted to nail Israel.

And on that basis its objectively measurable and not a matter of opinion or debate; when the Israelis set about exterminating the Palestinian population group, at that point there will be a genocide.

Brutal intimidation tactics, indiscriminate slaughter of civilians to get at Hamas, siege tactics and all the rest are plenty bad enough and provide plenty of material for criticism, without making stuff up.

My view stays the same. Hamas wanted a dash and they got one.

The comparison is see here is in WW2 Germany wanted a dash and they got one.

Men, women and children killed in their thousands.

Unfortunately I think this is the stance Israel has taken. Casualties don't matter.

Only the end result.

According to the redefinition of the term genocide, which seems to have the specific purpose of applying it to Israel, there is no difference between the Nazi extermination programme and allied bombing of German cities. Which is a bit queer, but there we are.

Well what's the old saying to the Victor's the spoils.

The situation over there is not going to be resolved in my lifetime.

Talk shite.

Talk shite
One of them was brutal levelling of enemy populations centres- and not to get at enemy combatants either - to break that enemy in an existential war. One of them was an organised and industrialised programme to eliminate a people.

Which one of these most closely resembles Gaza?

I’m not sure arguing over the semantics of genocide is really relevant.
The place is clearly a charnel house, although maybe that definition is equally arguable.
A slaughter of innocents then.
Its tasteless but not academic. It has material implications under international law. Which is one reason certain interest groups are determined to attach the label to Israel.

Your descriptions nail it; one of many around the world.

Looks more like the Picasso painting with the firing squad at times.

Those numbers are shocking (I'll assume they're correct or near to) as they are in Palestine, the key question becomes a) what can realistically be done on humanitarian grounds and what if any responsibility or influence do we have, alone or in part. What I don't know is how much this is complicity, impotence or neglect/indifference on the part of the Nigerian government. If they're culpable of genocide (which this sounds like) I'd support a similar range of actions I proposed against Israel - sanctions, arms embargo, ICJ etc actions I note you have chosen not to support in that case

I'd suggest Britain exert pressures such as withdrawal of arms and military training, and cancellation of the core nigerian plank of Boris' migration strategy for example. Shouldn't take that but if our government are actively enabling genocide in Nigeria then yes I'd support activism. Why do you think little or nothing is being done currently? There are iirc sanctions in place in Sudan against SAF/RSF affiliates. ..from afar feels similar.....
The Americans seem to be edging towards action.

Firstly I read that as though the comment applied to the synagogue of the rabbi in the film not all Jews or all synagogues. Secondly I think putting everything down to anti-Semitism is both insulting, reductive and counter productive. We've been over this ad naseum
He has said much else besides on this thread and others and the silence is deafening from those otherwise hyper sensitive to race discrimination. By striking coincidence this is exactly like wider society.
I don't tend to treat Ryan's posts seriously tbh doesn't mean he's always wrong but the conspiracy theory stuff doesn't seem worth engaging with so I just don't pay that much attention to any of it.
You had an opportunity when the topic was live on the board and took the view that if a couple of comedians were too edgy for the fringe, you could live with it - a comment revealing on a number of levels, including how conformist and establishment the fringe is, on which note your implication was spot on.

Let me correct you, I linked to one comedian from the article I could read in the National who was clearly pro Israeli govt in his politics and activism on line, I can understand if a venue would be reluctant to showcase that because imo that's pro genocide. I stated there may be more to the story than I was aware of which implies hopefully that I'm open to correction. But my initial reading was there was no evidence that venues had a ban on Jewish performers.
Less admirable was the willingness to shrug at Juden Raus and indeed attempt to tie it into Israel, ignoring the woman I cited who afaik has not even scaled the heights of controversy of wishing an end to killing on all sides and attending a vigil for victims of 7/10.
I couldn't read your citation, I've no idea about that case hence me concentrating on the one I could read about.
Bakunin of the Isles was a gag about your libertarian socalist stance and its striking failure to align with positions taken, from 'pasaran? Please do' onwards.
Sorry to say that while I'm interested in political theory and seek to apply core principles to my positioning I'll a) do that imperfectly and b) seek compromise if it means securing less bad outcomes. So while my position is to question the legitimacy of state power for each scenario it is used, when state power is a bulwark against for example what I see as the threat of the nativist right I won't fight that battle as hard as I would others. I do think Lucy Connolly case for example probably didn't merit the response of the state and have said so you can look it up if you're so inclined. The facts of that case are pretty distasteful (what she wrote) so I'm not really going to spend time on that sort of thing tbh

Agreed, as far as the Bounce debate goes although if international law was still a thing (and applied equally) genocide would be an important consideration.

Cool. When i said i would support the UK government taking what action it can against Israeli excesses such as food blockades, it is deemed performative hand wringing. I'm not really sure how we differ based on what you say here, other than I want israels misdeeds penalised, I dont seek their destruction.

one reason I suspect nothing is done is noone gives a shit. It gets next to no air time. Far from this being similar to sanctioning Sudan the UK entered into a strategic partnership with Nigeria in November of last year.

As previously noted, Nigeria has also been key to the 'Boris wave' engineered to crush working class wage inflation post brexit

The bottom line is noone gives a fuck. Like they don't about similar, if not on the same scale, all across Africa. No one gives a fuck about particular mincers in Syria, Sudan, DRC, Yemen. No-one gives a fuck when Jews arent involved. That's the bottom line. I mean just look at the contrast: we've had hundreds of thousands on the streets for months, obsessive media coverage, outright derangement from academics, celebs etc, a whole potentially major party launched with this front and centre....when its just one of many contemporary shitshows, far from the worst, and also not the only one where we are involved with actors. About the rest....well you pretty much have to search out niche media to find theyre happening at all. Its demented.

I am equally impotent on all of them, and I dont understand the singular preoccupation with one of them. I raised Nigeria because your argument for that was, as I understood it, that unlike others we were more involved with Israel. Nigeria is a case that refutes that as a distinction. It doesnt make it more or less important than Gaza, or Syria (whose new boys we armed), or etc

Firstly I read that as though the comment applied to the synagogue of the rabbi in the film not all Jews or all synagogues. Secondly I think putting everything down to anti-Semitism is both insulting, reductive and counter productive. We've been over this ad naseum

Well that is, shall we say, a charitable interpretation. Quite remarkably so in fact, and again I doubt it would have gone unremarked (and not just by you) had he reproduced it verbatim except with an Islamic ranter.

The jews being satanic is a theme of his, along with other stuff about jewish orchestrated white genocide, and lots else besides. All of which similarly escapes the attention of everyone but me. I guess why shall have to remain a mystery. Along with the free pass given to conspiracy theory from several others - i repeat, i give Ryan credit at least for knowing what he is doing more than others drinking from the same well, but with the far left packaging nazi source materials for them.

this blindness to stuff he posts frequently is more pronounced a) in the context of a board where people get furious about statements of fact, legitimate concerns, and other things about problems relating to other ethnic groups and b) those that claim to ignore his nonsense get wired into him for every other expression of it. Including where he actually has a point, which sometimes he does, despite his self sabotage wrapping it in nonsense. But I fail to see why people can get animated by whacky but harmless flat earth nonsense while apparently finding assertions that a cabal of jews are intent on white genocide- literally a retread of one of the most dangerous tropes in history - are beneath their attention.

Others have used this ignore him line before. I'm sorry, I just dont believe it.

I see nothing in that article attributed to this fella that is any way controversial, certainly not compared to Kneecap, say. Funnily enough I remember you being rather scornful of those of us who thought these middle class poseurs are arseholes but who also didnt believe they should be cancelled . Then there is Rachel Creeger, who as far as i know has done nothing whatsoever apart from be Jewish. I provided her as an example.

How can you honestly expect me to see not to see this as double standards, at best?

While you can only speak with authority for yourself, we both know that the lions share of those involved in the fringe, would similarly be first to the defence of the likes of Kneecap.

Israel is treated differently, and so are jews.
I couldn't read your citation, I've no idea about that case hence me concentrating on the one I could read about.

This is long enough already without getting into open ended terrain so I'll cede this one here.

Edit - i see you've just disliked a post where I give an objectively measurable way of assessing genocide, given what genocide means. You are welcome to explain what you found dislikable if you wish.

Just for your Nigerian point - great book to read is what Britain did to Nigeria I think it’s by Max Sullion. Gives some context on the complexity of Nigeria and how that still resonates today.

You were very light on the penalties - no support stated for sanctions for example, no view on UK recognition of Palestine, no view on arrest warrants for war criminals in their govt. I don't know why but to me it sounds like you view Israel as the exception because anti-Semitism. I don't seek their destruction, id proposed 67 borders enforced by UN
one reason I suspect nothing is done is noone gives a shit. It gets next to no air time. Far from this being similar to sanctioning Sudan the UK entered into a strategic partnership with Nigeria in November of last year.
What I meant is the issue appears similar not the UKs position, I don't know why we have two vastly different approaches.
.No-one gives a fuck when Jews arent involved. That's the bottom line
Ukraine says hi, difference there is pro Putin folk are very marginalised, our govt is pro Bibi. Why do you think apartheid south Africa was a cause celebre? Surely there were worse things happening in the world in the 80s? Soviets in Afghanistan, Iran Vs Iraq?

It's not the same to me, unless the Nigerian government are actively pursuing genocide, could you give me the equivalent statements from ministers in that govt?

That's your prerogative, tbh you seem to verge on conspiracy re why Israel Palestine, I like how you question motivation not how you deduct.

I'm not saying the guy should be cancelled im questioning whether he lost his gig because he was Jewish, I think you're over reaching but as before happy to see further evidence.
Edit - i see you've just disliked a post where I give an objectively measurable way of assessing genocide, given what genocide means. You are welcome to explain what you found dislikable if you wish.
Im now at the position where I see the genocide question as inarguable, you have continually sought to deflect or undermine that, I think that's exceptionalism, I don't think you'd be so rigourous or vocal on Nigerian massacres. I find it odd as well that their being Christian is your concern. It explains in part why they are being targeted sure but not why we should be particularly focused on that. All lives are of equal value.

It's a good sign.

The Japanese were a savage, imperialist people before that happened, and look at them now. Little peaceful Pokemon guys.

Hopefully the same will work with Hamas, though I won't hold my breath.

Anyone left living there let them go to Jordan with the rest of their people.

So you’re advocating the displacement of an indigenous population which is in violation of international law and is considered a war crime?
