Edinburgh roads

Transport minister on GMB this morning discussing pot holes and explained the billions being made available for general road upkeep. The talk was mainly about pot holes but he made clear this money was for all road work and local councils would be responsible for it's allocation. The councils will need to provide monthly reports showing how much has been spent and what in particular it has been spent on so they will be accountable to the electorate.
What they should be accountable for is who gets the contracts, who inspects the work, who is allowed to continue providing below standard work, connections between councillors and contractors, the direction that the gravy is flowing in.

As a driver this problem/scandal is (literally) hammered home to me every single day of the year. I'm sure my hair loss is partly due to the number of times my head hits the headlining of my car on a daily basis.
Unbelievable how they redo roads and within months they need doing again. Just not funny anymore. Definite gravy train milking going on.

They seemed to spring into action like shit on a shovel when it came to putting traffic calming / obstructing measures. I still believe they've been on one long giruy since the congestion charge was voted down
The ECC's whole "spaces for people" initiative was a fucking shambles. Those skinny traffic cone things that you see running along the cycle lanes on Gilmerton Road etc are a complete eyesore. Initially I thought they were a temporary measure but apparently not 🤯

Edit: Just seen this was all done due to Covid 😮

Or a utility comes along just after a digs bits or all of it up………..is there No joined up thinking ? They seem to do it most European Countries.

Your right, the same everywhere in the City, it was poorly implemented with a short feedback from the public to ensure it went through, all during covid to ensure as little objection as possible.

These things cause traffic chaos. The bus stop on Gillie Road just down from the junction at Moredun Park Road.

The 3 is at the bus stop. The 29 is now blocking the road.

The 8 cannot get into said bus stop at all.

Traffic held up all the way back past Morrisons.

It's chaos.

I was in my mates motor the other day and we stopped and got a cup of tea. Oh the joy as we hit a pot hole and the tea made me look like I'd pissed myself.

He was laughing and i gave him the biggest insult i could think of.

You fucking hun loving merrick.

Cue more laughter.

Now the law will be upheld about parking on the pavement (which i agree with) but Craigour Avenue has two buses heading up it.

I don't mind partly on the pavement but not blocking where lassies with prams, wee yins and auld yins have to walk on the road.

Parking on the pavement will be illegal in Edinburgh from the end of this month, with £100 fines being dished out to anyone who does.
Yep and I agree I'd fine fully parking on Craigour Avenue pavements. But room needs to be left for the buses to pass.

Most of the hooses have driveways to be fair so it will be interesting to see when visitors arrive what the parking attendants do.

Lochend Drive...basically it's all pavement parking on both sides and has been for years, and it's now a bus route for the 25.
Pavements are so wide there is no way people will be able to park on the roads there.
Will be interesting to see how they get round that one.

Allegedly the speed bumps were put in to deter lorry drivers going down Northfield. Why the feck would they do that. I can live with councillors not being experts but being dafties gets my goat. Was in rome last week. No pot holes. No 20mph bollocks. Mental drivers but guess what. Folk just on with their lives. Councillors thinking they know better than everybody else is scarily ridiculous. Let's us choose what's dangerous. Grrrrrrrr.
roughly 2x as many deaths on Italian roads than UK; region of Lazio (containing Rome) 2nd highest deaths in Italy.

Deaths per capita. Just sayin'!

Half the number of speedbumps would have been half the price and would have done the job on Northfield Broadway. I now cut through from Portobello Road to Willowbrae Road at Piershill instead which also has speed bumps on it but is a fraction of the length.
Standard car suspension wasn't designed to be constantly going over speed bumps and repeatedly crunching into pot holes. Once a car is 5 years old in Scotland the suspension coils/springs are brittle and snap going over speedbumps and into pot holes when they should be lasting twice that time before needing to be replaced.

Then there was all the recent widening of pavement sections on London Road between Meadowbank and Montrose Terrace. All expensive pointless cosmetic shite whilst every road other than the main arterial routes are busted up and full of pot holes.
The next anti car project is the proposed closing of Holyrood Park to motor vehicles which is currently the weekday relief valve for roads in the area. Close that and there will be gridlock at Craigmillar crossroads and on London Road in particular which equals more pollution. That move combined with the ULEZ are the next clouncil gambits to stop folk accessing the city in cars.

Take the tram. Oops. Unless there is something happens and Trams only run to Haymarket.

As I've stated before the trams are going to be running to the Infirmary at Little France.

That is going to cause fuckin chaos. And the lad who worked in the electrics told me that it will happen in our lifetime.

Then they are apparently going to run from the hossie out to Dalkeith but no within my lifetime.

I've always thought parking on pavements was selfish arsehole behaviour and I think it has always been illegal but not often enforced.
Clear pavements are a safe place for the movement of the blind, wheel chair users, the disabled, kids, old folk, pram pushers and the rest of us.

A constant problem as that includes parking over the dimpled crossings and lowered sections for crossing roads, citywide.

Yeah I see folk parking adjacent to lowered pavement sections including one at Meadowbank to the side of Sainsbury's just before the footpath that leads to our stadium. As I say, thoughtless, selfish arsehole behaviour.
What do you mean by dimpled crossings?

So i was talking to Derek my next door neighbour just now and we spoke of parking on the pavement.

I took this photie of the Avenue where the bus stop is. Now the cars parked partly on the pavement. If they are to park fully on the road how are buses and cars meant to pass each other?

Park in their drive? :102:

Some of them are visitors. Other hooses further up the Avenue don't have drive ways. It's a mixture of new hooses and prefabs.

We don't have double yellow lines. We got asked a few years back and refused. So the clowncil carried out road works on every road nearly into the scheme using 2 and 3 way lights.

I would respect those arseholes in the city chambers if THEY all used public transport rather than taxis.

I've heard some claim 'ooo but we work late'. So do other folk and they use public transport.

Going to be interesting seeing how many parking enforcers get banjoed in the schemes trying to enforce this.

The Avenue is one of the wider streets in Craigour hence the buses.

Could i just clarify i don't mind how the cars are parked there because the pavements are wide enough for folk to pass.

The pavement could actually be brought in a bit. But na. That would take years and would probably be fucked up by the end of it.

Could you no just have parking on one side of the road?

Well maybe but all the new hooses with driveways would need to be kept clear.

I can see the clowncil eventually puting in double yellows.

Some of the cars are hospital workers cars to be fair.

But it will be the usual Ill thought out shit from EDC.

Maddest thing I've ever come across here is to do with parking. Some roads in busy towns have parking on the right on even dates and parking on the left on odd dates. 😮
That happens at my pal in Canada's work. What is the thinking behind it? Anyone know?

In Caracas, capital of Venezuela, the cars have some sort of code on them that does not allow them to drive one day a week i.e. car registrations ending in 1, or whatever, are not allowed to be driven on a Monday!

Is it? I've seen folk park up at mine for most of the day and head hossie wise.

But are the car parks no full to the gunnels most days?

Aye mibbe, me and the missus parked next tae the bus stops and caught the bus tae the Western,
a couple of times in the last few weeks there was plenty spaces then.

Aye the 24 and the 38 go right from our bit to over there. When i was going to the Western to see my mate before he died i got the 8 to Cameron Toll then the 24 or 38.

The bus tracker thingy is boss for trips like that.

I see Sleigh Drive has been given new trees down either side.Aye very nice, but how about giving the tarmac an iron?
Apparently the huge tree that fell down last night (not a breath of wind) had been subject to a bit of dubious gardening skills, just like the other one what felled over :sm113:

(Overhead at a bus stop. The tree falling over equivalent of transfer talk at Greggs 😆 )

That fecker won't be driven again.
