So, here are the opening favourites to take over the national job. Odds provided by William Hill in this instance:

11/4 David Moyes
3/1 Malky Mackay
7/2 Derek McInnes
10/1 Paul Lambert
10/1 Sam Allardyce
12/1 Alex McLeish
14/1 Neil Lennon
16/1 Steve Clarke
16/1 Michael O’Neill
16/1 Tommy Wright
20/1 Alex Neill
25/1 Owen Coyle
25/1 Alan Pardew
25/1 Dick Advocaat
25/1 Mixu Paatelainen
25/1 Graham Alexander
25/1 Scott Gemmill
25/1 Lars Lagerback
33/1 Walter Smith
33/1 Steve Nicol
33/1 Billy Davies
40/1 Carlos Ancelotti
40/1 Brendan Rodgers
40/1 John Collins
40/1 Lee McCulloch
40/1 Duncan Ferguson
50/1 Gary McAllister
50/1 Barry Ferguson
50/1 Graig Levein
66/1 Sir Alex Ferguson
66/1 Graeme Souness
66/1 Kenny Dalglish

There are 32 people on the list but, for me, there are really only 15 - I just can't see it being Allardyce, McLeish, O'Neill, Pardew, Advocaat, Paatelainen, Lagerback, Smith, Ancelotti (haha), Rodgers, McCulloch, Ferguson (any of the three), Levein, Souness or Dalglish. The list, therefore, probably looks more like this:

11/4 David Moyes
3/1 Malky Mackay
7/2 Derek McInnes
10/1 Paul Lambert
14/1 Neil Lennon
16/1 Steve Clarke
16/1 Tommy Wright
20/1 Alex Neill
25/1 Owen Coyle
25/1 Graham Alexander
25/1 Scott Gemmill
33/1 Steve Nicol
33/1 Billy Davies
40/1 John Collins
50/1 Gary McAllister

Who do I THINK is in the running...? Realistically, I don't think anyone in that list would dismiss it out of hand; but McInnes and Lennon would, perhaps, need the most convincing to leave where they are. I doubt Collins would take the job on, and Mcallister has recently been part of an anti-SFA campaign so I don't think he'd be approached. Clarke might consider himself a bit too big for the job, while I'd like to imagine that the SFA would view Alexander, Gemmill and Nicol as much too risky.

Our list now looks like this:

11/4 David Moyes
3/1 Malky Mackay
10/1 Paul Lambert
16/1 Tommy Wright
20/1 Alex Neill
25/1 Owen Coyle

I also deleted Billy Davies because he's a torn-faced hun bastard. Fuck him.

[Coyle is missing from the poll because, as aggie knows, I'm a fucking idiot.]

So the top six is, arguably, not that bad. None of them are excrutiatingly long odds, none would be inordinately expensive, and none would view the job too negatively. In my own personal opinion, I wouldn't be too terribly unhappy about the appointment of anyone in this list but I'm probably most excited by Alex Neill. He's a young, forward looking manager with a lot to prove and experience in both the Scottish Premier League and both of England's top divisions.

But there are so many other options.

What do you think?

With no competitive games for yonks I don't think we should get anyone in just now.

Scotland will be in demand for friendlies before The WC, probably some decent high profile ones too, so I'd be hopeful a new manager gets in fast.

I'd like either Tommy Wright, Derek McInnes or Alex Neill

Coyle "might consider himself too big for the job", Zell?

Erm. He is managing Ross fuckin County last time I looked [emoji23]

Erm... Yeah.

Who the fuck was I thinking about when I discounted him... That's embarrassing. :doh

Alex Neil for me, he done a good job at Hamilton and encourages younger players.

I read a very convincing argument for Guus Hiddink. Now that would be an appointment.

Wasn't Billy Stark highly thought of by the SFA at one time? Dark horse perhaps?

I’d be pretty happy with Derek McInnes, Paul Lambert or Alex Neil. For me, the outstanding candidate would be Michael O’Neill.

I think Moyes is pretty much nailed on for it.
Considering the extensive first list , with some of them obvious non starters , I'm surprised Stubbs isn't even quoted . Not that I think for a second he would be in the frame , but he would be ahead of some others . Winning the cup will have made a few folk sit up and take notice , in Scottish quarters anyway.

Me, too. He needs to relaunch his career, and this is a job that he's currently available for. Seems like a pretty obvious appointment... Which likely means it won't happen.

But Mackay has taken interim charge:

Nobody should be surprised if it ends up permanent. And if it does, it's a pretty big disappointment as far as I'm concerned. He's probably my least favourite from those on my short-list.

It's a completely different job being an international manager to being a club manager. Success in the job is entirely dependent on the standard of players being provided for you by the clubs as you cannot buy or sell players. Also, you only get to work with your squad a few times a year. Therefore to me you don't really need to have been a good club manager to be a decent international manager. What's important is to get someone who is familiar with international football, has some sort of international status, and has the respect of both the country and the players.

I'm a traditionalist, and I know my opinion is not shared by a lot of people...but I think the Scotland manager's job should always be held by a Scot. I believe wholeheartedly that international football should always be about the best that your country has to offer both in players and the coaching staff including the manager. Scotland is a well established football nation and there are several good Scottish managers around who would be suitable for the job.

Alex Neil would be an interesting choice, but I reckon it will either be David Moyes or Paul Lambert and both would be good candidates. I think you can write off any manager currently at a club because I don't believe any half decent coach is going to leave day to day club football to manage the national team. No way IMO would the likes of Derek McInnes be interested in the job at this stage of his career. The Rangers will be after him when Caixinha leaves..but I reckon he will move to English football again.

Out of the names tipped I'd only really want derek mcinnes to get the job out of them, don't really like Moyes, Mackay, or lambert theyve not exactly got a good recent record between them. I wouldn't be against us bringing in a foreign manager.
