Video Games

A Bard's Tale! Bizarrely, they used to have a video and video game section at Gracemount Leisure centre and I rented that from there once.

Days Gone I was well up for but it took so bloody long to come out (seemed like years?) that I'd lost interest when it was finally released. I had also heard that it was buggy. Might have to revisit.
It was dreadfully buggy on release I gather, but all fixed now - on PlayStation, not sure the score with the pc port.

Ok all time favourites list seems like a laugh

Arcade - Bubble Bobble. King of the early single screen arcade games for me. Difficult but with an excellent learning curve which was rare for arcade games of the era. If you got good at it you could get a lot of game time for your 10p. I'm still pretty decent at it too. I managed to fill the scoreboard with my initials on a trip to NQ64 recently. That theme tune is bloody hypnotic as well.

ZX Spectrum - Dizzy and Daley Thomson's Decathlon were the go to games here. I think Magicland was my favourite of the Dizzy games. Treasure Island Dizzy with its one life could get in the fucking bin though.

Sega Megadrive - Streets of Rage 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Flashback and Sensible Soccer. All classics I'd happily still play today.

Sega Saturn - Sega Rally Championship: 3 cars and four tracks but probably still my favourite racing game ever.

Arcade again - There was a bowling alley/arcade in the town centre we went to on our lunch break at High School. Half my money went into Time Crisis, Mortal Kombat 3 and Metal Slug.

N64 - Goldeneye. We're into sneaking into the pub territory for me - this was the perfect pre-drinks entertainment. Four pals, cheap cider, pizza and giving a dead arm to any cheating bastard who went Oddjob.

Sega Dreamcast - Soul Calibur. Uni student by now. I associate this one with post-pub/club gaming. Loud shouting at your flatmates as you knock fuck out them while balancing a chips cheese and gravy on your lap. This was one of the best looking games I'd seen on a home console at the time too, an absolute stunner in its day.

PC - Half Life 2. Not much to say that hasn't been said on this one. An absolute game changer, not just for FPS games but for immersive storytelling in games too. Also loved Far Cry around this time.

PS3 - Bioshock and Portal 2 are two of my favourite games ever.

PC again - I reckon I'll be a dedicated PC gamer now, upgrading whenever I can be arsed. Over the last decade or so I've loved Amnesia: The Dark Decent, Hollow Knight, Slay the Spire, Spiritfarer, Baba is You, Cuphead, Undertale, Horizon Chase Turbo, Axiom Verge, Super Meat Boy, Deaths Door... I'm definitely a fan of the retro-aesthetic indie game (and cheap graphics cards).

Aye Pro Evo was streets ahead of FIFA in the early 00's. It always seemed so much faster and more fun to play. Then they lost all the official licenses and FIFA took over. On PS3 FIFA I somehow managed to get the PA at "Ivy Lane" playing Proclaimers 500 Miles every time Hibs scored a goal 🤣 The Peter Crouch robot celebration and making your opponent watch every replay angle of your goal was usually good for a forced quit 🤣

No not played those games - any good? What platform where they on?

Oh yeah I forgot you could do that. I used to edit the Winning Eleven team with Hibs players and colours then put them in the English league. There was no Scottish league in it those days.

Played both on Xbox. Excellent at the time.

I always enjoyed EVE online for PC back in the day.
Don't have the time nowadays not the patience for spotty American teenagers intent on blowing everything up.

Well after two seemingly endless 5 week months, I couldn't resist this on payday for just over £20. First three games remastered plus the DLC that was only previously available on PC.

Anyone remember the old arcade classic Vendetta? I used to play that game at the old Porty arcades and loved it. Wish they'd released it on a system.

Yeah I mind that, also played it in Porty arcades, what a time to be alive! Was a lot of arcade games quite similar to that - Double Dragon, Final Fight etc and Streets of Rage on the Megadrive.

I just remembered a whole genre of PC games I forgot to include in my previous post! The “point and click” LucasArts adventure games - Secret of Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle etc.

How is it? I've played a few remasters/remakes and some have hit the mark and some not. My favourite was Black Mesa the Half Life remake.

There's a remaster of Dark Forces that just got released that's caught my eye.

Loved a good point and click back in the day. Outside the LucasArts stuff, the Broken Sword games, Grim Fandango and Sanitarium were favorites back in the day.

Some of the puzzles in them would use total moon logic though.

Yep I remember all of those! Really was great days. Me and my mates would ride our bikes fae Lochend to porty and play in the arcades until we were skint. Final Fight was brilliant too. Used to be a good X Men game and Ninja Turtles too where all four could play.

Great times!

Never finished a Dark Souls game. Beat The Surge which is "souls like" but it's always pissed me off I've never finished one.

Got far on Elden Ring tae but just couldn't get any further. I'll need to man up and get one done.

You are right though. The game certainly doesn't hold yer hand which I appreciate also. Game these days have big icons on where to go and what to do most times.

Never finished a proper souls game either. But they are great.

Until Elden Ring. Stuck that out, 120hours later i finished it.
DLC just been announced so I'm back in getting the rest of the talismans and endings.

Metal Gear Solid and the Final Fantasy games on the original PlayStation and PS2 were my childhood indoors.

Playing the FF7 remake part 1 just now, part 2 is either just out or about to be.
Took me ages to get a PS5 so catching up on all their freebies.

Think I've still got save files for maxed out original FF7,8,9 and 10 across the multiple consoles they've released.
In fact I've still got the original artwork discs for them somewhere.

Metal Gear Solid, a game so big (at the time) that it was on three discs! Loved that game when I was young.

I never got into consoles.

WGT (golf) and Real Racing 3 (motor racing) on my tablet. Does that count?

Not started it yet. Just doing the tutorial and deciding whether I prefer the old Tank Controls or the Modern Controls. Especially when it comes to combination moves.

I was an avid gamer back in the day, from zx spectrum, commodore plus 4 (couldnae afford the 64), ps 1 thru 4 and now have an Xbox x I hardly play. Loved the old BBC games like jet set willy, manic miner, and Chuckie egg, still play football manager on my phone. Actually bought a Sega Dreamcast to have virtua tennis at home. The first Xbox was the game changer for me an aw, Halo was something else. A great moment was playing Project Gotham Racing 2 online with a mate who lives in Miami. I was sitting in a flat in Oxgangs, he was in the sun in the states and he'd invited his pal from Australia to play. We're racing through Edinburgh (the game was light years ahead of most for that shit) and we're approaching the top of Lothian Road and the like. rob shouts "STOP!!!" So we all hit the breaks.

"Up to the right there - that's where my mum stays, Craig"

I thought we'd hit the pinnacle of gaming!!!

What you playing on?
If its xbox I can jump in and help you smash bosses on Elden Ring.
Except Malenia, fuck that bitch 😅

Yeah I'm on Xbox dude. Can't mind the last boss I fought. I've no played it that long I'll need to figure the buttons out again 😁

Most recently completed Under The Waves which I thoroughly enjoyed. A great story and a bit different to other stuff out there. Fantastic soundtrack as well.

In the middle of Final Fantasy 16 at the moment when I can get time. The odd game of Fifa here and there as well. Usually just playing as Hibs in seasons. Enjoy the challenge of trying to get one over a 4/5 star rated team.

Looking forward to the new South Park game which should be fun.

Started on old Atari then amstrad various Sega PlayStation and a N64

Just got xbox game pass there and playing golden eye
Used to be my favourite ge when younger really dated now but class

operation flashpoint. So far ahead of its time it’s untrue.

Played this on xbox.
Not a big fan of soldiering games, but the night time missions on this were perfect.

Very difficult game, but we'll worth it by the end.

GamePass is brilliant value for money. My backlog is huge.

It really is if you like the indie stuff.

The big games will start coming soon, indiana Jones looks good, Avowed will be good, the rest... Might release eventually. Only been waiting a lifetime for Fable.

Powerwash Simulator and Jusant have been taking up a lot of my time lately. Really pleasant to play when high and one of my mates is an excellent, er, home baker.

Otherwise, I finally picked up Cyberpunk 2077 after they finished rebuilding it and... there's a really brilliant game in there that they didn't quite make and couldn't quite fix. I can't recommend it but I reckon the next one might be a cracker

I got Cyberpunk 2077 but held off until I upgraded to the Series X. Heard it ran on next gen consoles fine. We shall see...

I think running poorly was only a symptom of the problem, serious though it may have been. The main problem is that it wasn't finished and is full of weird cut corners. Even after the years of patching and rejigging it's still intrinsically half-arsed - tons of systems that still don't work or don't matter, huge areas of the map that are full of design but absolutely empty of content. A faction system that's attached to nothing. Ideas with no concepts.

So I've continued my Lies of P game after pouring to many hours into Palworld. Dunno how long Lies of P is but I'm trying to move away from games that take many of hours to complete. Any recommendations out there on games that don't take a lifetime to finish?

I usually consult the site above when I'm sifting through my Steam backlog for something to play.

It did make me realize how shit I am at games despite playing them my whole life though. I usually need well over the average completion time.

Cheers for that.

I'm the same on completion wise. Never generally do it 100% but as long as I finish the main story and enjoy it I'm happy. Couldn't give two fucks on getting games fully done.

Just read Lies of P 30hours 🙈

Lies of P took me a lot longer than that !

Might be worth trying out a ‘rogue like’. They are like old school games in that you play them start to end in one go, but is different each time, depending on the kit you pick up and some have generated levels rather than a set map.

Hades and Dead Cells would me my recommendations. If you have a PS5 there is Returnal an aw but it makes souls games look easy lol

It will take me longer tae. Fought a boss last night and took me 6 tries 😂

Dead Cells was brilliant. Sure there's several endings in that game though and wasn't sure if I got it finished or not. Confused me a bit.

Finished Lies of P. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Had problems with two bosses in the game but eventually got through it. My 2nd souls like game finished 👊🏽

On a whim I bought a Gamescube out a charity shop and went to that shop half way up Leith Walk and got a few games. I got Spider-Man,FIFA football 2004 and 2005,Gun,James Bond Agent Under Fire and Star Wars Rebel Strike Rogue Squadron 3.But I’m fucking hopeless at all of them.

Keep playing you get better.

Once I get properly settled into my new home I’ll get back into it.But I think I need someone who plays a lot to show me how to get James Bond into the fucking house to get started or to get Spider-Man to get through the practice session.Because right now I just give up in frustration.
