Tv series

Scrolling through the tv listings I see homicide life on the street is now available via sky / now tv

For anyone who hasn't seen it this is one of the best tv shows ever made.

Made by the guy who made the wire but it's better imho. One season actually has a story line that is basically a dress rehearsal for the wire season one.
Never watched the wire.

Is this new one based on someone? Or actual happenings?

If you watch The Wire eventually Stu stick with it. I know a couple of our mates who started it and gave up.
The Wire is up there with the best TV ever made. Think of it more like a novel by Dickens or Tolstoy. Yes, it's slow, but it builds up an amazing portrait of Baltimore society. The final season dips in quality compared with the previous 4 but that's still better than most TV dramas. It's not really a cop show, more slice of life thing.
Try watching with subtitles if you find the dialogue hard to follow. It takes a wee while for your ear to adjust.
They're both well-known now, but at the time I didn't realise Dominic West and Idris Elba weren't American!

Yep when I first watched it I though I'd seen these geezers somewhere before.

The last series is as you say not the best one but it's still decent.

I used to look up the characters and see who they were based on. And some truly horrible folk they were. Although an amalgamation of said real life folk.

I must give the wire a watch. To be smug for a moment I remember first introducing it to the board way back when. Tbh while I thought it brilliant I’m not convinced by claims it’s the GOAT (which you aren’t doing).

I think ‘dips in quality’ is kind to the last series, and it’s patchy before that. The first one and the one about the longshoremen are excellent but I don’t think the others are on the same level. I also think I agree with some criticism that it’s full of liberal projection in the way it depicts the gangs and ultimately it’s not very convincing.

Still brilliant but I think Homicide, Sopranos and - this one personal, I realise not such a widely held view - the Shield, are all a level above. So also GoT till it falls apart. And Edge of Darkness and the Smiley series from the Beebs archives. Oh and Bridesheas Revisited.

There used to be a website that told you what The Sopranos plots that were based on real life actions.

Here's the documentary about the Real Sopranos based on the DeCavalcante crime family......

I was with you until GOT. Tits and Dragons. Entertaining enough but it runs out if steam really quickly after they exhausted the source material and couldn't wait forever for George R R Martin to write the next one (still waiting).
I'd put Six Feet Under, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, Ozark , Fargo and Justified well ahead of GOT.
And shout out for Our Friends in the North and Boys from the Blackstuff from the Beeb archive. Also G.B.H. from Bleasdale on Channel 4.
Edge of Darkness is a great call by the way. Loved Joe Don Baker in that. Explaining the significance of Willie Nelson's Time of the Preacher to Bob Peck's character.

Blackstuff was outstanding telly. I also enjoyed The Street.

Brilliant writing and the episode with Bob Hoskins was the mutts nuts.

GoT you are correct. Once Martin's books were covered it lost its way.

Surprised you never mentioned Love/Hate though gadgie.

Not seen it. Will need to check it out.
Forgot about Mad Men. That was great too.

Love/Hate is brilliant mate. Some likeable characters some who are Merricks and some who are Irish Huns.

The Sopranos
Gomorrah
Love/Hate
The Wire

My top four.

You missed Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, Gomorrah, Narcos, Tin Star, all terrific crime shows.

If you never seen this Stu it's from The Wire and it explains how to play chess 🤣🤣🤣

I’m an expert at chess man, don’t you know that?
Well I’m very good anyway.
Well, good
Well….
I know how to play it 🕺🤣

Aye Malcy was a chess man as well. I know the very very basic game but I usually charge forward with the pawns. Git intae thum style

They sold everything man, mostly weapons
It was like The Shield (same geezer done it didn't he). It was a nice wee bit of hokum.

I watched Mayans MC as well but it was a bit of a kick the balls out of it series.

I struggled to follow the dialogue in mayans and couldn’t get going with it

It was a wee bit predictable. Only managed a few series though did it not?

The Mayans Mc? I’m not sure
Sons of anarchy about 6/7 seasons i think.
The only one that i didn’t find brilliant was season 3, they get in with the IRA, not as good as the rest of the seasons.
As said 5/6 great characters, 1 of which was scottish

Aye chibs 🤣🤣🤣🤣 our wee mate who done the time? His co accused knew the geezer who ripped his face.

He was a bit cheeky (arf arf) and got a perma tan

🤣🤣🤣 how’s is he doing these days anyway?
Not seen him for years, used to see his bro a lot at the match but not for a while

Aye he's fine. I was with both of them today. Scott's moved to the half way line now. He takes his laddie and grandson.

P is the same as me. Can't be arsed with fixtures being moved all the time. He never renewed either.

Saying that he has his laddies most weekends now as well.

Scott just got two of the commemoration silver Scottish cups in the boxes signed by Stubbs and Doolan.

Brocky had them for Tommy and if Tommy had bairns. But that's no to be. So Scott and P got them.

1923
It’s a prequel to yellowstone.
I’m on 3rd ep and it’s good… well worth a watch so far

Deary me Stu. The first series was sooooo long ago when we were talking about it.

Us retired lads know the telly well 🙄

Have you watched 1883 by the same geezer? About how the family arrived to where the ranch is?

And the second series of 1923 is just started showing from last Sunday I think it was.
