TRUMP IS A See you next Tuesday

It's some councils down south where there is a reorganisation taking place that would necessitate a further election very shortly after. This apparently is the same as Trump cancelling mid terms or standing for a third term. I know!

Indeed, but I'm sure that will be the line parroted by Farage, wee Tommy etc al.

So elections can be pointless? I thought that was how democracy worked?

You voted for self serving dafties in an election.

Then around 4/5 years later you voted for self serving dafties again?

But if that not correct then I stand corrected 🤔
Of course elections can be pointless. If you have a vote for a local council that is being dissolved in the near future then of course its a total waste of effort, time and money.

It is. I am accused of defending anything Labour does on here. Nonsense of course. But there's a constant stream of Telegraph and Guido stories recycled here as if they are fact. Generally there's a kernal there with a wildly hyperbolic interpretation. This is then often used by the Trump apologists. And on it goes.

The Chinese Embassy is a classic. Does anyone really think that any UK government of any hue doesn't risk assess potential security risks arising? But apparently Starmer has missed the secret rooms (apparently torture rooms) and cabling. Give me a break.

Criticise them for things they have done or haven't done. But don't manufacture stuff.

It's all so predictable now too and just amazing how it's not even hidden...the playbook:

1) Say something crazy like, 10% tariffs on all countries who oppose me taking over Greenland.
2) Tank the for stock market for a few days
3) Call off the tariffs and have the stock market rebound so your buddies could buy the dip and sell the high.

Oh look what just happened today!

Was going to say the same, this is market manipulation I'm sure. The guy is a complete crook. Credibility surely run out now though.

I read on tinternet from a guy whose cousin is best mates with Starmers paper laddies barber that that the security services HAD NOT BEEN CONSULTED!!!!!

I blame Muammar Gaddafi myself. He's the puppet master for all this.

If it wasn't for America Greenland would of been run by the nazis 🙄

Doesn't know the difference between Iceland and Greenland either.
When we were in Houston, the lad who cleaned the tables in our favourite burger bar said “I noticed you guys talk funny - are you from outta town?” My pal replied “aye about 4,000 miles outta town - a place called Scotland.” “Wow!” he said. “That’s outta State!”

TACO once again

TACO once again
Either that or getting what he wants through outrageous threats of something far worse.

At this point who the fuck knows ?!

Anyway, well done Europe for standing up to him / taking the bait, again who the fuck knows?!

You never ever back your narrative, much like Ryan, but God loves a trier etc

So define if you would, 'very shortly'. New councils dont go operational until April 2028 and we have councillors supposed to serve a four year term who will serve seven. Is two years 'very shortly'? Is 75% of a second term 'very shortly?

The fact that the electoral commission says its illegitimate and the speaker has denounced it will mean nothing too, I suppose, despite your usual stump being due process?

You dont really mean any of it do you? And you certainly dont care what is true. The Party and its interests is where it begins and ends.

This kind of thing is the rot at the heart of all of today's crises. Though I look forward to us having always been at war with east asia, yet again, if Starmer does a u turn at some point.

Well when you put it that way - STARMER!

I can tell you now there is a massive change in Labour thinking, I have been a Labour voter all my life, in Scotland and here in Australia where they spell it Labor.
Last year for the first time in my life I voted Liberal, it was a protest vote because all I want is for them to get back to basics.
It is a fact that over-here Labor are dependent on Muslim votes in crucial seats, it seems to me it’s the same in the UK.
My protest never helped ,Labor won in a landslide. Now after one year they are very unpopular, the Bondi massacre was a result of their pandering to the muslims by their constant antiemetic rhetoric. Incidentally the Jews overhere have along history with the Labor Party, whereas the muslims vote as a block directed by their Muftis.
I want Labour/Labor to represent workers, look after the health system, create jobs etc, not to tell us what to think.
They push the stupid net zero junk, push all different types of sexuality rights, tell us what to think about Israel. I’m over it.

Quantum fluctuations. Energy randomly appears in a vacuum. The quantum world is stunning.
A vacuum is not nothing. But this is very def a (potentially sprawling) other thread so will leave there unless you start that thread

Seems very reminiscent of the UK tbh

Leaving aside the Muslim stuff I mostly agree with you. I think healthcare, education, economy, jobs, social care are issues which are key to people's lives. I don't agree with you about not reducing emissions and moving from fossil fuels, but that's another argument.

I agree with you that the trans debate has been catastrophic, both here and in Oz. It's not just Labour here (in fact UK Labour have walked back medicalisation of kids but have more to do). The Scottish Government is going to court to get trans women into women's prisons.

TBH I think that stuff will pass. Through public disenchantment and court cases it will move on. But what a waste of time and energy.

Talking of court cases, this is an interesting one from down your way:

This one I find incomprehensible:

Here there is a general dissatisfaction with politics and politicians which makes it ripe for disruptors. Reform being obvious beneficiaries. Are they going to deliver for people? I very much doubt it.

Away from the Greenland furore Trump talked about some bread and butter stuff at Davos which could usefully be picked up. One such item was legislating against corporate landlordship, which while for now is a small ratio of stock (foreign and corporate ownership is under 1% nationally and 2% in London) is also rocketing

Capping credit card interest rates another interesting one, though my spidey sense is tingling on this one with unintended consequences (such as choking off credit to the less affluent). @Ryan69 may be disappointed at this as only the russkis are not keen on usury apparently.

Tackling a rentier economy should be one thing that the left and right can agree on, and Labour's own intent in this area is surely aimed right if perhaps not always translating into the most effective policies. The SNP too, though rent control is almost certainly not the answer.

Whether Trump shat his keks at a united front and voter opposition, including the lions share of Republican voters, or whether he asked for the moon and the stars with the intent of making folk glad to give him what he really wanted, who knows.

But the settlement that has been reached is reportedly US bases in Greenland which will be US sovereign territory. Apparently this is how British bases in Cyprus are set up.

Seems like a sensible off-ramp for all involved. For Europe it calls bluff on his alleged motive because this goes to the security argument (versus other potentially unvoiced motives such as resource extraction). For Trump it meets that motive if it really was the motive and allows a get out if he realised he had overreached.

For the West as a whole we go from potential NATO catastrophe to its potential strengthening, while Russia and China (as well as everyone else) are left wondering what the fuck he will do next and is capable of.

Could have been a helluva lot worse, so hats off to the backroom boys of diplomacy. And also to Starmer who did well not to rise to the bait from both left and right calling him a pussy, and didn't throw a hissy fit but was also resolute. But that's today, tomorrow he needs to build Britain's defence capability tout suite and that's harder.

Useful reminder from the Guardian's economically literate man, that the 'international rules based orded' was only ever the US' ball, which it has now picked up and gone hame for its tea. And moreover, a bit on why they have done that.

Absolutely mental that the rest of its crew, beguiled by global capitalism's absorption of the left, apparently don't get this or have memory holed it because capital powers their woke priorities and the state bureaucracy while destroying the working and middle classes. I daresay I'm not the only one old enough to remember lefties opposing globalism and Davos being their bete noir.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled...

I find this guy to be a bit of a hysteric and there are notes of melodrama here. But this particular article seems to me to be a better summation of Trump than most

Well @egb_hibs I've read it and be no surprise to you that I totally reject his ...
'We need to spend more on defence, slash welfare, embrace capitalism and entrepreneurialism, focus on cheap energy and become stronger.'

That aside I think that you are far, far too generous to Starmer when you say that 'Starmer who did well not to rise to the bait from both left and right calling him a pussy, and didn't throw a hissy fit but was also resolute' His actions have nothing to do with being resolute nor pragmatic but rather actions of a drowning politician in an ocean of British capitalism in irreversible decline in my opinion. As you often say Martin, a broken system.
Written the day before Trumps rambling proclamations yesterday changes nothing.

72 minutes of live, worldwide delirium.

72 minutes in which the President of the United States confused Greenland with Iceland. Multiple times. While explaining why he wants to buy it.

72 minutes in which he threatened a NATO ally, Denmark, with these words: “You can say yes, and we’ll appreciate it. You can say no, and we’ll remember it.”

72 minutes in which he called Greenland “a piece of ice” on which the fate of the Earth would depend: “What I’m asking for is a piece of ice in exchange for world peace.”

72 minutes in which he declared that he has “100% Scottish blood and 100% German blood.” Which would make 200%. But evidently maths is not his strong suit.

72 minutes in which he claimed that the United States, after World War II, “gave Greenland back to Denmark. The United States never owned Greenland. In 1916 they officially recognized Danish sovereignty. During the war they only obtained temporary military bases. And in 1946 they tried to buy it by offering 100 million dollars. Denmark said no. There was no “giving back.”

72 minutes in which he claimed that “China has no wind turbines.” China. The country that for 15 consecutive years has been the world’s largest producer of wind energy. The one that builds 45% of all wind projects on the planet.

But for Trump, “they don’t have fields of windmills.” They sell them “to the stupid.”

72 minutes in which he said that “all the big oil companies are coming with us to Venezuela.” Three days earlier the CEO of ExxonMobil told him to his face that Venezuela is “not investible.” Trump got furious and threatened to exclude Exxon. other companies are standing on the sidelines, terrified.at Davos he said “they’re all coming.”

72 minutes in which he claimed that “there is practically no inflation” in the United States. U.S. inflation is at 2.7%. Above the Fed’s target. Forecast to rise because of his own tariffs.
But for him, “there is practically none.”

72 minutes in which he attacked the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, calling him “stupid” and “Jerome too-late Powell.” In front of world economic leaders.

72 minutes in which he told the story of imposing tariffs on Switzerland out of spite, because “a woman” whose name he doesn’t remember “petted him the wrong way.”

72 minutes in which he said that “yesterday the market crashed because of Iceland.” A country with 380,000 inhabitants. That supposedly made Wall Street collapse.

72 minutes in which he claimed that the United States “paid 100% of NATO.” 100%. When the American share of the NATO budget is about 16%.For him, 100%.

72 minutes in which he mispronounced Azerbaijan as “Aber-bajian.”

72 minutes of stream of consciousness. Of easily verifiable lies of made-up numbers, Of threats to allies. Of insults to officials, of geographical blunders,of boasts contradicted by facts.
The world, in silence, watched the most powerful man in the Word, President of the world’s greatest power, confuse two nations, threaten Denmark, insulted the Fed, lie about Venezuela, invent inflation data, deny the existence of the Chinese wind industry.

Equivalent of reform over here is Pauline Hansons,One Nation party. At the moment they are leaving all the other opposition parties behind. Labor hate them but for the same reasons as Reform they want to stop immigration, or at least be selective, they also want to scrap net zero. All very well but their leaders are total nut jobs.

I wouldn't expect you to agree with that G, but it was his take on Trump that I thought hit the mark

Nobody can really keep up with events with Trump. I'd not be surprised to see Iran back on the agenda shortly....

Just a wee reminder on one: while he exaggerates as ever, Icelandic banks played a hugely outsized role in the bank crash. The size of their home country meant little at the zenith of neo liberalism - RBS was the biggest bank in the world after all.

I cannae mind the details but they became massive with some crazy, too good to be true (as it proved) offerings. Loads of people got wiped by them. They didn't cause the bank crash on their own but they massively out punched Iceland's apparent weight and were very much exemplars of the problem - big state governments and banks running casino economies.

TBF he was addressing a room full of people who couldn't define a woman, and are substantially responsible for many others being similarly lobotomised.

Calling Greenland a piece of ice doesn't even register by local standards, where you can call a penis female.
