TRUMP IS A See you next Tuesday

Britain didn't sell the Chagos Islands they transfered sovereignty to Mauritius then leased the military important bit of Deigo Garcia back on a 99 year lease. Diego Garcia is the island where the native Chagos islanders were booted off by the British in the 1960s and promised the right of return which was never granted....thats why they are pissed off now
Yes, selling would be too much for starmer, he paid them to take it.

We don't have a time machine and today's islanders wanted to stay with Britain. So we pumped them then and we've pumped them now.

Buying and selling other people's homes. Its not that much different.

It certainly looks like it. Too many hoping the mid terms will stop him. Bizarre times we live in.
They will if he loses the house which all polls are pointing to, his own Republicans are starting to shift from Trump, think Vance will be lined up but think the damage will already be done with Trumps cuckoo behaviour.

I'm fairly certain, CBA looking it up for confirmation.

The deal was negotiated by the tories upto the point of signing. Then procrastination, probably aware it was going to be controversial and pre GE, meant Labour once again had to sort out the mess the tories left behind.

Mess still pending.

Add the tories in then. What UK governments have done is not a million miles away.

Now he’s off on one about the Chagos Islands

Someone should maybe tell him he’s missing out on bowling while he’s having this extended psychotic episode

Blair getting touted for Yvette Coopers job on Sky news this morning.

Apparently US accepted it last year.

Was talking about this last night. Starmer is buying and selling people's homeland like it's his toy (when I say 'selling' i mean labour style, ie giving huge amounts of money to the 'buyer' in order to give them our territory) which is not a million miles removed from Trump and Greenland.

He is also weakening our and US security and playing into his hands on the security argument, ie a weak and silly Europe can't be trusted.

Not the strongest position from which our incredibly astute Trump-whisperer could have come at this.

The double standards of the plastic patriots.

Just as Hungary 1956 split the international left for a generation, so Greenland 2026 may do the same for the right.

Good article. But true patriots would surely then wish for a country / continent that stands on its own two feet and is not America's pup? Not a lot of that going about from any corner as far as I can see.

TBF though wasn't this pretty much a done deal that they inherited from the previous Tory Government?

What i mean is it was a deal the UK establishment in the Foreign Office thought was correct.

I like Paul Emberys stuff. He has his views quite close to an awfy lot of folk.

Doesn't change the point. It's a UK move, Starmer is the one that has to face off to Trump.

And if the FO think it's correct to buy and sell people we already pumped in the 60s, they're not that far away from Trump.

I'd say real Labour. Though of course apparently real Labour is economics of having two blocks but each of the three children should get one block each and no child is a boy or girl until they decide their pronoun.

I'd say real Labour.
I agree in sentiment but I'm not sure it's true in practice. If enough of Labour become bourgeois bohos that aren't that fond of Britain or the plebs then I'm afraid that's what real Labour is now.

We have an urgent need for an Embery style party of labour though. But if you sat down to define that I wonder how different from Reform it would look!

It was. A deal that was forced on the UK after losing court case after court case on sovereignty. A deal that was praised by Trump and Rubio. The money changing hands is to secure the use of the Diego Garcia airbase.

So we've gone from Trump signing the deal off to him condemning it and using it as an excuse for his Greenland actions!

Is it messy? Yes. But decolonisation is. The Reform and Tory argument seems to be (despite the Tories largely preparing the deal) is that we should have ignored international law and remained as colonialists. That's not a no consequence option. Not just in the courts, but diplomatically.

IIRC nothing compelled the UK to do anything.

The US view was never as clear cut as that, as I am surprised you don't know. Look to Trump's lieutenants fella, the man himself says whatever it suits him in the moment, and that has now caused problems for Starmer because our actions are not that different to his: that's the substantive point whatever Trump says today and changes tomorrow.

Giving Chagos to a country over a thousand miles away that has nothing to do with Chagos other than the British empire administered them from the same facilities in Mauritius, and doing so against the wishes of the islanders, is 'decolonisation', how?

Larger powers trading a smaller colony like a bargaining chip is the very definition of a colonial mentality I would have thought. That is what Trump seeks to do with Greenland, with the main difference being it's present 'owner' doesn't want to play.

The feelings of respective islanders have little to do with anything it seems (2025 polls suggest 84% of Greenlanders favoured independence from Denmark).

Trump is wrong and Britain was wrong, because self determination should be central. Which part do you disagree with?

think he’s spot on about the chagos islands, even chagos islanders are against it.
I don’t get it, Falklands next….. Not that i care a lot about the “empire” getting smaller every year.. but whatever Starmer does doesn’t make sense either.
What is his plan? Does he even have one?
Apart from being shit scared to actually stand up to the USA (the Trump) bullying anyone and everyone apart from Russia who he is going with a softly softly bothers in arms charade 🥸

China next Stu, he's letting them build a massive embassy withs secret rooms.

Right beside a major data centre i hear.. what could possibly go wrong 🤣🤣
A 'secret room' not explained in plans (and the approving minister has not seen unredacted plans anyway) a mere meter away from main Internet cabling.

Nothing to see here
