He wasnt the only one to raise money and he never expected to raise so much but he wanted to do his bit to help NHS workers. Hopefully the £33m and counting will bring some relief where it is needed.

A gutsy old bugger for sure , ironic how things work out sometimes :(

Don’t agree how he’s been politicalised from a certain party for there gains, RIP and good job on raising cash and spirit at the time.

If it wasn’t for the uk government that auld boy wouldn’t have needed to do what he did and they’re all lining up with platitudes for him. They, that fuckwit Johnston especially, have a fuckin nerve making political capital out of his death

Almost like going on an all inclusive trip in December for Xmas with his family to Barbados wasent the best idea

Remember how surprised I was when I first heard him speak kinda expected a public school boy accent and there he was this plain speaking old gent.
Who would have thought that walking round his garden everyday with his zimmer would get people warming to him so much as to raise all that money for the NHS.
I think the walking was secondary to his charm persona and determinant that imo is the reason people wanted to contribute to his effort.
A truly remarkable man and for a former soldier I’m glad he got recognition from his Queen and country.

At 100 wouldnt you prefer to go out in style? surprised he wasnt first in line for vaccine weeks earlier mind you, or was that because he has recently has pneumonia

That was the reason.
It was seen as too much of a risk.

While I think it was absolutely marvellous what Captain Tom did my first thought when I heard Boris wanted us all clapping on the doorstep at 6 o'clock was what did he not want us all to hear on the 6 o'clock news.

Seemed like a decent old sort, not the middle/upper class twonk I'd first thought he was. He apparently went through hell in the Burmese jungle during the war.
I never really agreed with an old man having to raise money for causes the government should have been and that old cow knighting him and never sticking her mit in her own taxpayer funded pocket. But God bless him nonetheless

Just one things guys.

The money raised by CT went to a NHS charity, not the NHS*. Charitable stuff like this (and Hibs campaign) is not allowed to be used for core NHS services, much of it goes to the little things in life that make NHS workers a bit easier while they're piling through their shifts.

One thing that 'pleased' me about this particular nationwide charity is that it covers all 4 nations, money has actually been spent in Scotland, Wales and NI as well as England. Quite often you see or hear of charities appealing in all 4 countries but they are in fact English charities. None of the money collected elsewhere gets spent elsewhere, only England.

* for the avoidance of doubt NHS, certainly in this instance, is a collective term for all the NHS in the UK and NI.

Wonder what will happen to the profits from the book and proposed film both done by his granddaughter?

Nothing against the old boy personally, although when I look at the medals on his chest, I wonder how many young lads like himself he killed to earn them. Likewise well done to the people who actually donated the £30+m. Just can't stand all the militaristic/Second World War guff attached to him. For people who're unhappy Poppy Day only comes around once a year.

The whole thing reeks of hun.
He was obviously a decent guy and loved by his family but this public mourning is a load of nonsense.
Social media full of BAs and ww2.
Loadapish

I respect the auld fellae for what he done, a proper hero, someone who cared. The shitshow that has gone with it gives me the boak.

RIP

wasnt for guys like him the world would be a much shitter place. But maybe Hitler wasnt intent on wiping out Jews gays blacks etc post a thread just respecting a guy who done something good, has become more political than the establishment itself. Maybe Hibs supporters should all just think alike, hate the UK hate the forces and our own supporters in them, only vote independence and admire dudes like sean connery who wasnt slow to leave Scotland behind,
