Labour

Farting against thunder Jimmy. Turkeys voting for Xmas.
Yep mate I think there is a very real problem especially down south.

There's no point in NOT discussing our views on subjects that can be seen as controversial.

But folk are getting really pissed off because as soon as any concern about immigration is mentioned then the 'you're an ist an ism or an ophobe' of some kind.

And the backlash is happening against 1st 2nd or 3rd generation migrants and not the politicians who are just trying to get on with life

ironically, it was Hibs’ 150th anniversary last year. Did you not learn anything? 😂

Irish immigrants were once accused of bringing crime, refusing to integrate and not fitting into Scottish society. Now their descendants are an integral part of Scotland, and you’re supporting a club founded by that very immigrant community.

I agree the small boats situation needs much better regulation, and I don’t agree with uncontrolled immigration either. But those concerns don’t automatically lead me to your conclusion about immigrants/refugees as a whole. That’s the point.

Maybe history is worth remembering before deciding that today’s immigrants/refugees are somehow uniquely incapable of integrating.

Lastly, if we’d had Poland’s immigration policy back in the 1800s, Hibs probably wouldn’t have been founded in the first place. So tell me — who would you be supporting then?

I’ve been a member of this page for 10 or so years, not logged back on till ages… politics aside the threads on here are always great ;)

I quite like the politics threads although it can be heated at times.

Echo chambers are not a good thing and different views make for good posts.

I've read the booklet. To see what the fuss is about, it's a 5 minute read.

My take away was ... Immigrants aside there's a lot of indigenous people could do with following the guidance and they don't have the 'excuse' of ignorance of the Law 😔
Its more to do with cultural differences than ignorance of the law.
And just because we have indiginous shitehouses disnae mean we should import more shitehouses

I wish people would stop equating whats happening now with the past and the irish.
After 2 or 3 generations the Irish had largely intigrated and inter married. I cannae tell the difference between my mates with some Irish ancestry and those that havent.
And have those immigrants made any effort to intigrate into the british culture and intermarry, nope. You probably wouldnt be able to date a muslim girl never mind marry one but they seem to have an unhealthy interest in our young girls

Louise Calvey, executive director of the Asylum Matters charity, said: "By singling out people seeking sanctuary as in particular need of basic instruction not to commit abuse or sexual violence, the government is fuelling hostility, suspicion and racism, instead of doing any real work to promote understanding or safety."

A, theyre not seeking sanctuary , theyre coming from france, a safe country.
And B, you think the director of asylum matters charity is looking at it from a neutral viewpoint

See theres a few labour MPs and ministers with their snouts in the trough.
Theyre all as fuckin bad as each other, disnae matter what party they belong tae.

It's human nature, not political party affiliation.

There will always been someone out to feather their own nest/hold the upper hand.

Sad but true.
I wouldn’t use that term. It suggests it’s a trait common to us all, which thankfully it isn’t.
It’s true there are shitebags in every party though, although more in some than others.

But even the “two or three generations and the Irish integrated” point proves my point. It didn’t happen overnight. Irish Catholics were still facing discrimination and being treated as outsiders in Scotland well into the 1950s, 60s, 70s and even 80s. There are documented cases of people being denied jobs simply because they were Catholic or went to a Catholic school, and research records anti-Irish/anti-Catholic prejudice continuing into the 80s and 90s.

I’ve actually got family members cousins etc (quite a few actually) who have married into white Scottish families, so the idea that Muslim families simply don’t integrate or intermarry isn’t true either. I wore a kilt at my own wedding and had a lot of different cultures present, was quite nice actually. I can send you pictures :)

Again, I’ll repeat what I’ve said before. I’m not saying there aren’t genuine problems with integration or that the small boats situation shouldn’t be dealt with — I think it absolutely should. I’m saying we shouldn’t take the behaviour of some people and use it to make assumptions about an entire community.

This daftie gets a £130,000 a year and jets all over the world for freebies eh sorry I mean important business meetings.

But she's dead important apparently......

Andy Burnham is under mounting pressure to sack his 'climate tsar' after she racked up more than enough 'air miles' to get to the Moon.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal Rachel Kyte has clocked up 250,000 miles worth of official flights in less than two years in the job – and that includes business-class trips to glamorous locations such as Rio de Janeiro, Seoul and Barbados.

Ms Kyte, a one-time fan of environmental group Extinction Rebellion, came under fire in June last year for running up 75,000 air miles since she became the UK's Special Representative for Climate in September 2024.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) considers these expenses 'cost-effective' and 'in the interests of taxpayers'.

But according to climate-protection organisation myclimate.org, Ms Kyte would have burned 100 tons of CO2 on her flights – ten times the average person's annual emissions.

It would take you 27 years to rack up the equivalent emissions driving a Range Rover.

The £130,000-a-year climate representative role was brought back by Labour after it was abolished by the Tories in 2023.

It's classic whataboutery with absolutely no similarities. In fact the opposite is true. Catholics were discriminated against but were eventually accepted.
The current nonsense worldwide with Islam is with folk who hate Western life/people/laws and want to destroy it. It's their stated aim.
Why people repeatedly ignore this is one of life's mysteries.

Irish Catholics were on the streets though stating they'd not be subjected to the rule of law....

But you’re not actually disproving the Irish comparison — you’re just saying the situations are different. R u in denial? 😂 I’m not saying they’re identical; I’m saying history shows that integration can take generations and that people can be very quick to decide a particular group will never integrate.

I’m Muslim myself. My grandad and Mrs two great-uncles fought for this country, as did around a million other Indians and Pakistanis, so I’ll be having absolutely none of the suggestion that Muslims or people from those communities haven’t contributed to this country or don’t belong here.

And in terms of integration, I agree there are issues, and there are parts of the country where communities aren’t as well integrated. But Little Ireland around the Cowgate wasn’t exactly a model of integration either — and look how that story ended.

I chose Hibernian not only because I was born in Leith, but because it’s a story I genuinely relate to. It’s a story of immigration, discrimination, integration and eventually becoming part of the fabric of Edinburgh. You need to understand the history better, mate.

The situations aren’t identical - “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Give us a break mate things take time.

Please do stop equating the origins of Hibernian Football Club (Men who came from another part of what was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland at the time) to an all together entirely different set of circumstances that we witness today.

Again, you’re in denial about the own club you support. I’ll break it down again.
Ireland was subjected to centuries of English and then British colonial domination, so the fact that Ireland was part of the United Kingdom from 1801 doesn’t suddenly erase that history or the distinct Irish identity.

Your point is “They weren’t really immigrants because Ireland was part of the UK,” that’s technically relevant to the constitutional situation, but it doesn’t invalidate the comparison I’m making. I’m talking about migration, prejudice, integration and how attitudes towards a community can change over generations.

The point isn’t that the Irish experience is identical to what’s happening today. Read my last post. It’s that history gives us a reason to be cautious about assuming that a community will never integrate.

Who has said that?
You said the “nonsense worldwide with Islam” involves people who hate Western life, people and laws and want to destroy it, as though that is something Muslims collectively represent. If you’re talking specifically about extremists, then say extremists. I have no issue condemning them.

But don’t blur the distinction between Islam, Muslims and extremism and then expect me not to challenge it.

Also don’t agree with loony left, Im beyond the right and left spectrum, it doesn’t help us anymore.

Muslums ha e been here fot years, mostly Pakistani shop owners, and the vast majority were acxepted and have got to know their local communities. The iddue appears to be with the sudden mass migratiin of radical Muslums helll bent on implementing Sharia law. Would be i teresting to see the statistics for inter marriage in UK though. Not just Muslim but other religions. It should be noted though that ardent followers of any religiin tend to marry people within their own failth, even in Christianity.

Scotland does not have the huge iimmigrant cimmunities taking over whole swathes of the community like happens in London and Birmingham etc. I do think that has not helped integration in England.

You conveniently left out the word "current" you know perfectly well the demographic I and others mean.

The irish didnt come here to foist their religion on others or with an avowed religious intent to take over the world.
How many of your muslim cousins that married into Scottish families were women? Very few I'd guess unless theyve gone against their religion.
Nah, there is absolutely no comparison between what happened then and what is happening now

You really are one patronising twat. I'm in no denial about the "...own club you support" (whatever that means) I've read every available piece of literature on our club and the ignorance, bigotry and sectarianism they faced in its birth and origin.

The Italian community faced similar to the Irish. But like our founding fathers they immersed themselves into our communities. They didn't seek to challenge and change our way of life. There was no need for any Government to distribute literature on basic obvious rights and wrongs.

Honestly your attempt to compare the issues all over the UK today with our founding fathers of Hibernian Football Club is embarrassing laughable nonsense.

You'll no doubt get the usual suspects along saying "yes all immigrants face ignorance, racism & bigotry" and this today is similar to the foundation of our club 150 years ago because that's what they do. Celtc supporters excel in it. Good luck with it. But bottom line the majority are seeing through that racist prick Humza Yousaf and his similar Celtc pish.

The irish didnt come here to foist their religion on others
This and…
They didn't seek to challenge and change our way of life.

But that’s not really true either. The Irish absolutely brought their own religion, traditions, schools, organisations and communities with them, and there was plenty of anxiety at the time about them changing Scottish society. They didn’t simply arrive and abandon their identity to become Scottish.

The important point is that over time they became part of Scottish society while retaining aspects of their Irish and Catholic identity. That’s what I’m getting at. I went to a catholic school and most of my friends growing up had Irish ancestry they were proud of.

And my days… For the (I think) 4th time? I’m not claiming the Irish experience is identical to modern immigration or that Islamist extremism isn’t a problem. It obviously is. I’m saying we shouldn’t assume that maintaining a distinct religion or culture automatically means someone is trying to “challenge and change our way of life.”

I’m Muslim, I have family who fought for this country, and I live within its laws. Most Muslims dont want trouble, work hard, get on with life like most people. I can retain my religion while being fully part of society. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.

He's got his 5 mil, reform got their 17 mil. Probably wouldn't get out of bed for £225k!
