A tremendous Labour man, who fought (literally sometimes !) his way to the top and had a huge influence on Blair's government from 1997.

Dies aged 86 after years with Alzheimers.

I love that he knew how to hold a grudge. I remember him slagging off Chumbawamba when he heard they had split up, saying he intended to buy their greatest hit album.

Represented the aspirational working class of the Labour Party very very well.

I liked him a lot.

One thing that surprised me was a documentary in which he went to a south London estate and met a single mum scraping a living in a grubby flat. He was shocked that people were living like that - I thought “where have you been?” To be fair he went of his way to help her and her mates.

A grudge? @Purple & Green There is nothing said in the article which we did not say at the time nor about other political heavyweights after their passing. Similarly two days after Salmonds death this was published by we Commies. No grudge here either, believe me.
