John Byrne

RIP John. Used to see him in church. Still a stylish old blade even in his elderly years.

R.I.P John Byrne. Artist and writer of Tutti Frutti. My abiding memory is the wonderful album covers he did for Gerry Rafferty.
😥
It really is a great album cover.
Byrne first came to my attention through the brilliantly funny Slab Boys Trilogy in the 70's.
I saw the first The Slab Boys, with Robbie Coltrane and the last Still Life with Gérard Kelly and Andy Gray at the Traverse. Brilliant.
In 1979 the BBC did The Slab Boys as a Play for Today with Kelly featuring.

Aye just remembered about the Slab Boys after I posted. Great stuff. He did four Gerry Rafferty album covers (Can I Have My Money Back, City to City, Night Owl and Snakes & Ladders) plus the two Stealers Wheel albums and the Humblebums, his folk duo with Billy Connolly. His style is instantly recognisable.

I know City to City and Night Owl, two very recognisable album covers. Prefer City to City as an album but what a track Night Owl is, might listen to that tonight.

Yeah. I can never make my mind up which one I prefer. City to City has Whatever's Written in Your Heart on it. I read somewhere that his family sang it acapella at his funeral.
It was also the favourite of a dear friend of mine, sadly gone too soon. Always chokes me up.

I have a nice remaster of "City To City" released in 2011 with an accompanying extra disc of demo's including Baker Street which proved Rafferty had the fanfare plotted on guitar before he decided it needed sax and Raphael Ravenscroft stepped in for the glory
