Agree with that Archie. It's much like the terms far right, fascist and nazi used to try and shut folk up.

Do you think anyone being described here as the left, wouldn't identify as such?

Perhaps in contrast to the somewhat expansive 'right' you see under beds, hiding in closets or out of the corner of your eye?

@egb_hibs I concur. The RCP has been but with tiny footfall in compared with MSM. Though you don't necessarily have to accept their conclusions nor anyone else for that matter, the events on the ground as reported by RCI members in Iran are at least informative.

The reason I have some hope for Iran is that they are not arab: they have alternative roots to cling to than Islam. That and they tried the islamoleft thing already.

The likely viable way forward is they call the shahs descendant back from exile.

I'd hope the Iranians have higher ambition than you seem to have for them.

What do you mean? Park the western hubris for a moment: they quite literally already tried the progressive accommodation with Islam and all the progressives got murdered and they got 47 years and counting of rule by mullahs.

The same pattern has been repeated in dilute form all across the region. Western cultural imperialism is an ex parrot, rejected it in its homelands and utterly obsolete elsewhere.

They are likely to choose a workable solution from their own heritage not a white saviour fantasy.

Its not North London. Liberal democracy is a product of the Christian West and looks destined not to survive the decline of its foundations. Elsewhere it is a colonial transplant and long gone where indigenous civilisation is reasserting itself.

Iran / Persia was a great civilisation before Islam and while the West was a muddy field. A returned Shah may not be ideal by our standards but I suspect they will decide it and a reassertion of their heritage is their best bet.


We really must stop looking at the world through a white supremacist lens.

Let's see what happens. It's a fairly diverse population as I understand it, highly urban and educated. They flirted with democracy before in the 50's until there was a coup and the Shah was installed (Brits and US orchestrated front and centre as per usual). So who knows? I'm sure the US will be all over it.

What if Iranians decide on an Iranian solution, ie monarchy, over western imports?

The Shah in exile called the people to the streets last night and they answered in their millions. Not that you'd know it from British media.

I'm mearly stating the fact that puting a Sha back on the throne won't put food on the table or money in your pocket.Probably quite the opposite.

Could be. But it may be the best option they have. Or it may be the option they take (which is not the same thing). It's kinda looking like the latter at the moment.

Bear in mind, going with the left gave them the Mullahs last time round.

thanks... nipping out but will have a sketch on my return.... (I heard on radio in car earlier murmers of US/Israeli undercover bawbaggery in Iran, but didnt get the whole report, so not sure if thats an actual thing or hot air from the current rulers)

Would not surprise me. In fact I have a sinking feeling that relative media inattention might be connected to this: ie regime overthrow would please Israel and the US so they don't want to give it oxygen.

Hope I'm being tinfoil hatted here because that would be deplorable.

If you are gonna be on the bus this may be worth a listen. I don't trust this guy who Davy posts now and then (Davy agrees) as i think the edits on his vids are manipulative. But this was a worthwhile listen last night where he was on triggernometry live as it was unfolding

You can check out all the vids you like, this is the latest iteration of revolt against the supreme ruler Khameini by the people.

I worked with Iranians over a long period - enough to learn the alphabet and some words - and tho I never went there, the impression I already had of them much earlier in my life was confirmed.

I had a year abroad to better learn my spoken French and it was exactly the year of the coming Revolution and overthrow of the Shah.

Back then in '79, the old Khomeini original lived in exile in France so was never off the telly news.

The French government were pretty anti him but there were many demos in support on the Parisian streets.

I knew a couple of Iranians who lodged near me. They were happier being called Persian and were obvs pro-Shah and modernism. They were not Muslims either and preached business and barter as their preferred way of life. Very good sene of humour too!

Later at work in an office here in NL, I dealt with agents in Tehran who hated their lives under the Islamic regime but loved their country. They were also very skilled negotiators in business and told me that was a basic precept of life there.

I can't confirm that and realise this is a completely anecdotal contribution to the thread, but there it is fwiw.

I hope they will find some firm of government which allows them to spread their entrepreneurial skills in peace - and I say that as an old-fashioned socialist - because they and their ancient culture, poetry and architecture thoroughly fkn deserve it.
