hugh shaw

I'll see what I've got today or tomorrow.

Edit: What I have to hand is he played 234 league games and scored 13 goals between 1918 to 1926.

brilliant

I was reading quoted from the FF and lawrie reilly descibes him as having played in the famous half back line "keir-miller-shaw"

keir? miller? - I'll try and work these two out next once i've got shaw sorted.

conatacted a guy I know in islay to see if he knows anything...i'm guessing he was born somewhere between 1890 and 1900

I'm assuming he's dead too? though I can't find any record of that?

that's a topper - do you know who that note was intended for?

To all of you guys above - thank you soo much for the fantastic memories brought to me by these details about Hugh Shaw, the first manager I saw in charge of Hibs. He seemed a gentlemanly type, and I think people had great respect for him, especially as he gave us, in the wake (no pun) of Willie McCartney, our greatest-ever side. But he always seemed to conduct himself with dignity. That team ensured that I could only ever be a HIBBY!!
You know, at that time we feared no one. The contrary was the case - the others feared us. I have many anecdotes, derived from oral tradition (from my late father), of exploits of the Famous Five, and I could bore anybody all day with them!

That 'Keir' looks like a misprint. Shaw played on the left with Peter Kerr on the right and Willlie Miller in the middle.

Hugh Shaw was signed by Dan McMichael in August 1918. He was signed from Clydebank Juniors and made his debut at Douglas Park on the 24th August 1918 losing 1-0 to the Accies.

This is a very interesting thread. I learned alot from this one and ill keep my eye on it. Me being a young lad at 22 means i have no information on this guy atall. Im glad im learning about him though Cracking thread.

He played for the herz near the end of his playing career. After he resigned as manager at ER he became manager of Raith Rovers, but couldnae prevent them being relegated in 1963 (which is what almost happened to us that season !)

I remember he used to have a newsagents up at Marchmont. I think he died in the late 70s.

Additional info that I have:

He was born in Clydebank
He played for Clydebank Corinthians, then Clydebank juniors before signing for hibs. He left for Rangers then played for Hearts, East Fife, Leith Athletic, Elgin City & Buckie Thistle retiring around 1934 from playing.

He died in February 1976.

Dont think he was Tiger Shaws brother, that was Davie who did though play for us.

Are we getting our half-back lines confused?

The wifes mother was an ardent Hibby in her younger days(40's & 50's), she's 80 now, and she's always telling the tales of the Famous Five etc. And usually names the whole team right off, and her half-back line was Kerr - Govan - Shaw. :hmmm

That was a generation later Gunner, mid 1940's onwards. Jimmy Kerr the keeper, Jock Govan and Davie Shaw.

Whereas Hugh Shaw, Peter Kerr and Willie Miller were playing in the early 1920's.

Alfie Conn Snr - replaced him as manager at raith rovers

"I had two years under Willie McCartney, the manager who signed me, then for the rest of my playing days Hugh Shaw was my mentor, initially as the club trainer.

"Hugh was a gem of a man. Easy to talk to. He'd been a Hibs hero in the Thirties in the legendary Kerr-Miller-Shaw halfback line.

my typo!

Looking for information regarding a guy named "Shaw" who worked on a ship called Glenfinlas out of Glasgow in 1914. When he visited Sweden in 1914 he was briefly employed as manager of local side Kalmar FF for just a few months before WW1. Could it be this Shaw?

@moathibby , are you a turnip now?

@Swede in joke on this forum, Moaty is famous for dragging up old posts. I am sure one of the Hibs historians on here will have a reply?

I suspect unlikely as he was born in 1896, so would have been 18 in 1914. He didn’t start playing for Hibs until 1918. He played for Clydebank Juniors previously which is probably worth of further investigation.

I’ll see what I can find.

Oh I would be so thankful and happy if any information just leads me to the right guy. Thanks in advance!

Interesting the born on Islay bit - seems a bit random to be wrong - will check that.

Ok…there was a Hugh Shaw born on Islay in 1896, and listed in the census as living there in 1901 and 1911.

At least one hibs book lists him as being born on Islay and not Clydebank - they Clydebank birth is probably an error that’s been perpetuated.
