Best night out in germany been a few times :) loads of touristy stuff too

Its an ideal place for a city break. The waterfront spreads over a large area and is very attractive with interesting history and a very relaxed atmosphere.

City Centre is full of the shops you would expect from the 2nd richest city in Germany and you can explore the rest of the attractive city of parks, water and nice modern architecture by open top bus.

Football you know about of course and any Bundesliga game is worth going to.It's easy to get tickets for HSV and much preferable to the irritating St Pauli. Werder Bremen is only about 90 mins away and cheap and easy to get to.

"Red light area" the "Reeperbahn" if that's the right description is vibrant lively and completely safe and best visited at night as the place comes alive with theatre, music and cabaret

Next time I am in Hamburg is late Nov as its a good gateway to other parts of Northern Germany.

Cheers for that....

I enjoy doing city breaks and usually do one a year as a late summer holiday break....(unfortunately not this year though !). I fancy going to Krakow next year on a city break as I have heard a lot of good things about that place, and based on what you are saying about Hamburg I will likely go there the following year.

Had a long weekend in Krakow last year in June. It is an attractive city with a great mix of things to do and see. The historic centre is easy to get around on foot with the main attractions being within walking distance of the main market square. It is very affordable - prices of food and drink as cheap as I've encountered in Europe for a few years. Even the Hard Rock is about half the price of their equivalent outlets elsewhere. There are some excellent professional tour companies who specialise in airport pick ups (worth it if you arrive late at night) and tours to Auschwitz and Birkenau direct from your hotel. All very reasonable in price too with guides who all speak excellent English. Can pass on the details of same if you end up going. The other place a little out of the centre of the city but is a must visit is Schindler's factory. You can walk to it if you fancy a wee promenade or there are trams and buses that run out there too.
Give us a shout nearer the time if you get booked up :thumbgrin

PS I've booked up for next April and Hamburg - thanks folks :thumbgrin

I think you just sold me on a wee city break to Krakow.
Sounds excellent.

It is definitely somewhere I will visit again one day. Good value, fair bit of history, nice architecture and easy to get to at a reasonable price. Easyjet and Ryanair both go there from Turnhouse - lots of flights from the Burgh :thumbgrin

We were there in June so it was warm and had that summer time vibe of sitting outside in cafes. We were there for the Jubilee weekend last year, just before the Euros. The day we went to Auschwitz the German national team were there too and then we got back to Krakow that evening to find Mario Balotelli at the next table in a cafe. Quite surreal. Have been told it is also pleasant in the run up to Santa - lots of Christmas markets and festivities.

Well, thought I would resurrect this seeing as I've just come back from my short break :thumbgrin

Can only confirm the opinion of SlovSam, was a great choice for a city break. Lots to see and do and would suit a wide variety of tastes. Highlights for me were:

* visit to HSV and watching a first team training session complete with well kent faces like Johan Djourou although sadly not van der Vaart, who was sitting out injured. Was interesting to see a training session being watched by hundreds of fans and the club engaging with them willingly. It is obviously a regular routine as there was a wee coffee van selling hot drinks and ice creams to the supporters. Sky Sports were there filming the training - not sure if there was a one off reason for this. Stadium tour was interesting and lunch in the stadium restaurant was a pleasure - sat at a table overlooking the pitch bathed in glorious sunshine as the manager held a press conference with tv and radio at the half way line. Training quality was clearly on another level too

Visited St Pauli too but there were not the same opportunities to engage visitors and even their fan shop was shut at the time we rolled up. So hard to gauge things in terms of comparisons.

* trip on the Alsterwater - fantastic views of the very beautiful leafy suburbs of the city. We floated past homes owned by some of the HSV players, various members of Abba and other German worthies. Absolutely gorgeous scenery.
* Walking the Elbe Tunnel under the river. Fantastic opportunity to go out further into the harbour by walking under the river. Beautiful architecture in the tunnel itself and the views back to the city were worth the walk.
*the old haven and the very successful attempts at regenerating what must have originally been docks similar to anything on the Forth, Clyde or Mersey. The new philharmonic building being one example of how new architecture can sit side by side with industry and old architecture.
*the city centre - Rathaus, the Alster Arcades, the siting of high end shops in gorgeous old buildings. No different to sauntering through the likes of Venice or Milan. Didn't go into Tiffanys or the like but did treat the laddies to something from Abercrombie and Fitch.

The hotel we stayed in was a little out of town but I went for it based on the ratings it has online. Well worth it. High spec finish for a mid range price. Excellent service, high quality everything. A joy and would definitely go back there in a heartbeat :thumbgrin

Das Hotel: Hotel Volksschule

Given Easyjet fly there daily and the journey is only 90mins, it is a super option for someone looking for a 3 day trip (I'd say anything less would not allow you to see enough). Very glad we went for it :thumbgrin
