Anyone on here been to said city either as a tourist or on business? Is it somewhere you could do a decent city break?
loads of touristy stuff tooIts an ideal for a city break. The waterfront spreads over a large area and is very attractive with interesting history and a very relaxed atmosphere.
City Centre is full of the shops you would expect from the 2nd richest city in Germany and you can explore the rest of the attractive city of parks, water and nice modern architecture by open top bus.
Football you know about of course and any Bundesliga game is worth going to.It's easy to get tickets for HSV and much preferable to the irritating St Pauli. Werder Bremen is only about 90 mins away and cheap and easy to get to.
"Red light area" the "Reeperbahn" if that's the right description is vibrant lively and completely safe and best visited at night as the place comes alive with theatre music and cabaret
Next time I am in Hamburg is late Nov as its a good gateway to other parts of Northern Germany.
Cheers for that....
I enjoy doing city breaks and usually do one a year as a late summer holiday break....(unfortunately not this year though !). I fancy going to Krakow next year on a city break as I have heard a lot of good things about that place, and based on what you are saying about Hamburg I will likely go there the following year.

Had a long weekend in Krakow last year in June. It is an attractive city with a great mix of things to do and see. The historic centre is easy to get around on foot with the main attractions being within walking distance of the main market square. It is very affordable - prices of food and drink as cheap as I've encountered in Europe for a few years. Even the Hard Rock is about half the price of their equivalent outlets elsewhere. There are some excellent professional tour companies who specialise in airport pick ups (worth it if you arrive late at night) and tours to Auschwitz and Birkenau direct from your hotel. All very reasonable in price too with guides who all speak excellent English. Can pass on the details of same if you end up going. The other place a little out of the centre of the city but is a must visit is Schindler's factory. You can walk to it if you fancy a wee promenade or there are trams and buses that run out there too.
Give us a shout nearer the time if you get booked up
PS I've booked up for next April and Hamburg - thanks folks![]()

I think you just sold me on a wee city break to Krakow.
Sounds excellent.
