    A Place Full Of Radges!

Greetings from Poland

Just spotted this - as a Highlander, I have a real affinity for Poles. They came over in numbers and made their lives and raised families in the Highlands of Scotland particularly from the late 1980s onwards. Without their hard work and strong community spirit our part of the country would have really struggled with recession particularly as so many of our young people had left to find work elsewhere. Sadly many Polish families went home in recent years but I hope they all know how much they were enjoyed and respected.

Cheers for that, Bofahibee. Glad to know that our folks were/are getting on well with the locals in Scotland.

I wrote a little bit about it in another thread - Scots are practically a tribe of Poles that wandered too far away from the camp (or maybe it's the other way around). ;)

I've worked with some good Polish lads over the years.

The lad who used to do the tiling for an insurance repair company though got what he thought was good advice from someone.

Poor geezer followed that advice and bought a house in Bingham.

Most folk in Edinburgh wouldn't buy a hoose in Bingham.

No seen him for a while but hopefully he escaped from there.

Hm... suspicious. Let's see...

Internet says:

Bingham - a quiet, residential suburb of Edinburgh located roughly three miles from the city centre, making it fairly accessible. Houses here are mainly flats and villas. Bingham benefits from a strong sense of community, and local initiatives like Lifting Neighbourhoods Together actively support residents in areas like education, housing, health, and community building. Nearby amenities include local shops, schools (both primary and secondary), and Bingham Park—a 15.7-acre green space ideal for walking, cycling, children’s play, and relaxed outdoor time. Transport links are solid, with regular buses into the city centre and quick access to the bypass, A1, motorway network, and Edinburgh Airport.

Sounds like a nice neighbourhood to me, but of course locals know better. All big cities have such areas, ostensibly nice but having reputation for drug addicts, pick-pockets or knife-wielding maniacs. Which one is it in Bingham?

With regards links between Poland and Edinburgh I heard a great podcast the other day about Wojtek the polish bear who fought in the second World War. He thought he was a human and used to like to eat cigarettes while other soldiers smoked. He won some medals I think. He ended up in Edinburgh Zoo and his former comrades would sneak in and play about with him. It was on the Rest is History Podcast. Very beautiful story.

That's not the Bingham we all know :gigglle:

He was Syrian, not Polish FYI

That's definitely the case with me - my ancestry is a mix of Scots, Irish and folk from Królewiec (although it was East Prussia when they came across from the Baltic to live in Dundee).

Wojtek is a legend! There's a cool 3d animation about him by Yarnhub...
