Has died. Most people of a certain vintage would have known of him.A shott putter and one of the strongest men ever to have walked the planet.I once spotted him in the Meadowbank restuarant when I was going to tennis coaching. His plate was piled high with food. All I could think was 'fucking hell no wonder your huge'.He was also noted for breeding budgieregarrs.Anyway; a personallity from my past gone.

Sure he was a cop before he was famous.
RIP

In the last 50 years, one Briton had thrown the shot further than Geoff Cales pb on one solitary occasion in 2003.

That Briton who did that throw was twice banned for a cocktail of drugs in samples and avoided a ban for life on a technicality.

RIP Geoff.

Still holds the British record

Britain's Carl Myerscough did throw longer than Capes' shot put record with a distance of 21.92m in Sacramento, United States, but that 2003 result was not ratified.

Went to Loughborough University which is renowned for producing great athletes and sports people. Seb Coe went there amongst others.

A memory of big Geoff was on the old Superstars programme which pitched various sports people from different sports against each other (brilliant fun by the way). Geoff was playing five a side football and on the other side was Mick Channon who was really getting under his skin, being used to the physical contact side of playing football, unlike Capes’ discipline. Big Geoff got pretty angry with him and erupted.

Goodnight big fellah, sleep well.

RIP.

Like others have said he was a feature of the Olympics and Commonwealth games when I was as young and Superstars.

Always seemed an affable guy.

Wasn't he in the first series of Strongest Man?

Always - well nearly 🤪 - affable and apart from all his stadium success, seem to remember him turning up in cameos in many of the hit tv shows of the time.

RIP Big man
