What is the point in having 28 players in an 11 a-side squad, aged 15 years old?
This size of squad can only dishearten some players. If these Representative set-ups are to take boys in then surely a smaller squad of players would be better all round. They could make two squads/teams with those numbers, and the players would receive more game-time, which is, in the end, the best learning experience the players can get.
The Regional Squads at U13 and U14 are selected from the district Development squads after the local Development officers have worked with them for a few months.
There are four local district squads - Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. They are set up at the end of P7/beginning of S1 via trials process. Each district works with their own squads for a few months, getting to know each kid's strengths and weaknesses before recommending a limited number to go to Regional Squad trials.
Again they work with the boys at a number of training sessions and trial games before Neil Orr and Keith Wright whittle down those boys to be in the SE Regional Squad. I have to say this process is fairly comprehensive and generally ensures who gets in deserves to be there. The current U14s squad has about
22 players, all who went through the process in this manner.
The U13s district squads are just about to go through it.
All local squads run with no more than 20 boys. (Or girls! There are girls representative squads too)
The purpose of the Regional Squad is to provide an alternative pathway for boys who have chosen not to go Initiative yet (and there are a number in the U15s age group) or have not been approached yet but show promise. The games arranged are usually against Initiative sides to that end.
At U15s the SFA hand on the squads to the SYFA and - probably simply through lack of resources compared to the SFA Development set up - they selected a squad after an open trial match following recommendations from boys club coaches.
I also know they have made the effort and gone out and watched some of the boys in action for their clubs. However, taking on a new squad, this will have made it more difficult for them to whittle things down so easily I guess. Alternatively, they simply may wish to run with a bigger squad to start with as boys end up going Initiative half way through the season and are no longer eligible for the Regional Squad.
The basis of the squad still has the boys who came up through the U13s and U14s but there are now boys who haven't had to go through that lengthy process to get in. (That said, such as young Daniel on here thoroughly deserves his place as he is undoubtedly of that level).
The next stage of whittling down for them comes in a couple of weeks time. The Scotland trials will be held in about 3 weeks time. The Regional Squad coaches will have to select a
very limited number of boys to go for Scotland trials. This will happen for all age groups from U14 upwards. They will have trials with the best boys from all the other regions and - if successful - will then be promoted to the national squad and all that goes with it.
The current SE Region U15s have about 9 very good internationals. :glassraise:
