Starmer moving the goalpost. In his pledges he indicatwd he would put the defence budget up to 2 5%. The armed forces say they need 3% to modernise fully. Now Starmer says 2.5 is a goal but that there is I dictations he might cut the funding. In an increasingly volatile world, Starmer chooses to leave the defence of the UK to chance.

Probably going to need that other 1% for prisons that are rapidly filling up and probation officers for everyone being released early.

If you invite the potential enemy in on boats everyday..Doesn't really make any difference??

Refugees till about 8 years ago,were always woman and children.
Now it's only Military aged men.

If you fear for your family....you sent your wife and children first!

Comrade Starmer will make many Flipflop decisions....Just depends on what his masters at WEF tell him Todo.

I think we lag behind in most sectors. Not so long ago we had 4 aircraft carriers, two always being out st sea. Now we have two and one always seems to be getting repaired. We don't keep stockpiles of tanks, ships, planes etc in the way Russia and USA fo, so we rely on what we have. NATO is something we rely on and what is also causing complacenct amongst member countries. Some countries are waking up to this and spending more. Trump rightly points out that too many countries fo not pay the required 2% minimum.
Numbers in the military is falling and benefits troops enjoyed years ago are being stripped away. That might appear a good thing and some say unnecessary extra spending, but it is also a reason many are leaving.

I am less concerned about massing of tanks as we see how quickly they get knocked out Mass development and study of drones and anti-missile and aircraft is required. Also why do we appear to lag behind countries on cyber technology? We are a small island and need to have the means to protect our shores. Ships, submarines and the most modern radar and sonar systems cost money and what looks good randy may not in 5 years. Cutting budgets mean we will eventually slip back

FWIW I don't think we will be attacked by Russia anytme soon, unless they have given up and accepted the end of Russia. But there is loads of other threats out there.

I don't think there has been a good enough shift in the thought processes in middle officer and junior ranks towards intolerant attitudes. We lag massively behind other countries in recruiting people who have settled in the UK. Racism and attitudes to woman still prevail and need rooted out. That also might involve a lot of money being put into instructors and identifying who are problem officers and enlisted soldiers and getting them out the forces and training officers to understand how to integrate.
 
All the armed forces have been run down by successive govts.
I believe the royal navy only has about 4 frigates and destroyers seaworthy at any one time out of a total of about 15. In my time in the 60s and 70s we had about 70.
Unfortunately you get bullying at all levels of society and I don't suppose the armed forces is any different but I can honestly say in my time I genuinely never came across any racism
 
Also there are now lots of ethnic minorities in the armed forces,many Fijian for example serve in the army

Yup. Amazing folk still buy this line. One key reason we import so many people is to pretend the economy is growing.

GDP per capita is lower than it was in 2007. Prices aren't.

Our army and navy were built on class, discipline and brutality. Whilst this isn't exactly endearing I genuinely believe its part of what made our armed forces all conquering historically.
I think some of the residue from the past (Empire) remains in certain viewpoints and regiments but that will never change.
Espirit de Corps should not be underestimated.

yet we seem to have the 6th biggest economy? Things falling apart would be down to those folks who are elected in Westminster i'd have thought. Navy has nice new laser weapon, and our equipment in the main is top notch. We pay our fair share in respect of Nato re military spending in relation to GDP.

We seem to have armed foces which can project their prowess around the globe when needs be.

Not that im disagreeing with anythin in your post about the shit state Britain has found itself in Beags

Also, how important is defence spending with a nuclear deterrent? We're unlikely to be invaded or attacked. I realise that long term this is quite the isolationist point of view, but if short term cuts are needed isn't this an area we could save money?

Basic training...they would say whatever they wanted to you,and it was water off a ducks back(which isn't right I know)

White NCOs would say things refering to someone's colour.
Black NCOs would say things refering to someone's colour.

They saw it as abot of fun....but in this day and age people would probably cry.

I’ve pointed out many times, this is a trick of Jeremy Hunt and his predecessors. Part of their motivation for mass migration is that it increases GDP by having more earners and spenders in the economy, which swells the headline GDP figure. But it doesn’t make those outside the top tier better off - quite the opposite - and it isn’t making the country wealthier as it’s a net cost to the state.

Jeremy Hunt wanted you to believe that a million and one guys each with a quid, represent a wealthier cohort than a single millionaire.

As I have provided you with links to more than once, if you look at GDP per capita adjusted for PPP we barely make the top 30. That is the measure of how wealthy people in a country are. We have barely budged since the immigration gates were opened by big Tony, and are now beyond the silicon tits levels he achieved through casino banking.

You don’t seem to care for the facts EGers but they ain’t changing. Approaching 400k of debt for every soul on these islands, does not a wealthy country make, however much faith you may place in Jezza or Reevesy. Our GDP is large for the same reason as luxury destinations like Russia, China and Brazil - lots of skint people add up to a big number (until you divide it by that number of people).

We are absolutely rooked and if we were in the euro we’d have been a cold , wet, Greece.

Other countries did it and many of them are fcked anaw. Few were as dependent upon it as we were. You will find almost no ‘rich’ countries lower than us on the table I have shared with you a number of times.

You sure? If I recall correctly our public sector was more indebted than Greece and our private debt greater than Ireland’s (per capita obvs). They both went breasts skywards, we massively devalued sterling.

Britain doesn’t have magic soil or a secret sauce. We are an elderly nation fallen on hard times who covered it up with Ponzi banking and now do so with a Ponzi approach to our population.

You say I’m being chicken licken? Does it feel like economic good times to you? If not, when did it last feel like that?
