I’m surprised the rules allow for party members to vote for a new prime mincer rather than the electorate.

I know the public are voting for local representation at each general election, but some part of that decision is based on who they want to be prime minister and the local vote can reflect that preference.

Why is such a crucial leadership contest confined to a narrow group of people with narrow political and social interests? What’s to stop the party maliciously electing a complete despot hell bent on destroying the country?

I’m pretty clueless on the minutiae of parliamentary processes like this so happy to be informed.

Strictly speaking the PM is appointed by the Queen, although she basically accepts the view of the ruling party.
The vote taken now is just to elect the leader of the party not the PM.

But it’s pretty much a technicality.
 
Im working class so regardless of who's prime minister or which party they are from i know I'm still going to get royally fucked

I think you'd be surprised how many folk putting their x on the ballot paper do so because of the respective party leaders.

She's a Poundshop Margaret Thatcher.She only got 57% of the vote.Out of 160000 who could vote she got a Wembley full.Ian Duncan Smith was more popular.I'd be surprised if she's still here in two years time.
 
The sad thing is the very thing the UK and its citizens need right now, is anathema to Truss.
Its bound to be as big, if not a bigger disaster than the neep was.

I’m sure she got the gig because of her charm, wit and intelligence. Seriously I think she got the gig for the same reason as Boris. Stupid cvnt that’ll take all the shite up front and if, I mean when, it goes tits up they will get another silly cvnt. I think this whole things been stage managed.

Not me. She's got to work with whoever won.

If she starts off by being confrontational then she loses the middle ground. By taking that reasonable tone and the middle ground when Truss becomes confrontational and uncompromising Sturgeon wins the hearts and minds of the reasonable people even if they don't necessarily agree with what's she's saying.
 
Truss won because she was the Johnson candidate, whereas Sunak was seen as a backstabber who helped bring down their hero.
Such is the cult status of Johnson amongst many tory members. The parliamentary party not so much since they were the ones that eventually realised he was now a vote loser and a liability to them so got rid. However their membership made up of white, middle class and middle aged and pensioners, have just done a big "feck you" to them and elected the female version of what has just gone before. So out of touch are these clowns with reality they think this is what the country needs and wants.
IMO Truss is out of her depth and won't last long.
This is what politics has become now...a cult worship thanks to the likes of Trump, Johnson etc.
To an extent we have the same up here with Sturgeon...nobody is really interested in politics, it's all personalities and easy soundbites for the masses. All this while ordinary working people in this country face what for me will be a bigger crisis than Covid.

Agree with you GM, I think she is so out of her depth that it’s just a matter of time before a no confidence vote is called, Chris Bryant ripped her to fucking shreds in a couple of select committee meetings earlier this year. PMQ s will be a blast.

Starmer is as ineffectual as Truss.
