The pathway promise: Why Scottish football is struggling to produce young talent
Scottish football is wrestling with a growing concern over the number of homegrown players who are making to the top of the game.
Agreed, nevertheless I’m grateful we had an Irishman and an ”Australian” playing yesterday. Mulligan and Kerr were our only Scots born players in the starting line-up apart from Boyle IIRC.It should be at least 5-6 Scottish players playing for every SPL club every game.
Having watched Hibs "other" McGrath playing for Alloa on Saturday, playing against part time players is not furthering his prospects.Agreed, nevertheless I’m grateful we had an Irishman and an ”Australian” playing yesterday. Dare I say it? Reserve League.Having watched Hibs "other" McGrath playing for Alloa on Saturday, playing against part time players is not furthering his prospects.
He played alongside Scott Taggart ( 3game Hibee 16 years ago) and got little help from him other than getting bawled at.
Too many youngster loaned out to lower leagues seldom return even half ready for Full time football.
What has to be remembered is the game in Scotland revolves around two clubs, and operates entirely for their benefit.
Any attempt at serious reconstruction such as reserve leagues etc will be thwarted by a dual combination of Celtic/Rangers and the TV companies.
We need to see far more scots playing regularly in our top league.
Is it any surprise the standard of the national team has gone down so far since the early 90's when football changed forever ?
We need strict quotas of scots playing every week, but it will never be agreed.
