Well, who do we want next?

I’ve listed some of the names quoted as early front runners. Do we go with more of the same, a younger coach, or try something different in order to reach the next level?

Ange would either be a master stroke or a disaster but I’m wondering if his stock is too high for the Scotland job. Alex Neil always seems to be in and around a club battling for promotion so it would be difficult to tempt him away from every day management to what essentially is a retirement gig. The rest are pretty underwhelming.

The first thing to recognise, with apologies for stating what should be obvious to anyone, is that being an international manager is a completely different job from being a club manager. You only get to work with your players a few times a year, much of your time is spent watching club matches, and of course you can't buy and sell in the transfer market. An international manager is completely dependent on the quality of the players available to him.

I would suggest that that no manager currently managing an English premiership club, or a Championship club, or a foreign club, is going to leave that job to manage Scotland.
The day to day involvement with players which club management brings is just far more appealing to managers than international management.
So our options are severely limited.
For me, the Scotland job is best suited to an elder statesman of the game who is proven as a manager, and who is scottish....that's why Clarke was the ideal guy seven years ago.
I firmly believe that international football should all be about the best that your country can produce, whether that's players or managers...and before anyone mentions Tuchel, that's also a joke appointment IMO.

McInnes would have been the ideal guy to follow Clarke, as he has done his stint as a club manager for years now and is in his mid 50's, however the call of Ibrox was too much for him this time round. I honestly cannot think of anyone else suitable. Normally it would be one of the coaches or the current backroom staff, but Steven Naismith is the only one there with any management experience and he is too young and inexperienced to be an international manager. The key qualities for the Scotland job are experience, and ability to organise, and an ability to build a club atmosphere around the squad. Also, a proven ability also to get the best out of a largely mediocre bunch of international players would help. Let's hope we can bring through some better players in the next few years to help the new manager.

God help the SFA in trying to select a new manager to follow on from Scotland's most successful ever manager.
He'll be a hard act to follow as far as I am concerned.

Michael O'Neil anyone?

Interesting shout - worked wonders with Northern Ireland the first time around. Although if people thought Steve Clarke was a pragmatist, they’d have a melt down at Michael O’Neill’s tactics.

No so much who we want, who would want it. I am inclined to think of a younger Scot’s Manager……………….jack Ross ?.

Seems to have settled into the comfortable background roles of football rather than management.

I think the certainly used to be the case, and still is for the most part, but there are plenty of younger coaches who have used international management as a launch pad into bigger jobs. Not being involved in the day to day might actually be an appeal to some too, particularly depending on family life.

I think the key part you’ve said here is ability to get the best out of the players available, but I’d take it a step further and say someone with an ability to over-perform.

I voted for Ange, but it’s a long shot, but I really think John McGlynn would be the best candidate within Scotland - understands Scottish football from top to bottom, track record of over performing, coached under a top manager in Rogers, a good tactician… he’s far more appealing than a McInnes type for me.

The SFA clearly favour a manager who has a cautious approach in order to produce mind-numbing football.
Sir David Gray anyone? 😉

We should be going for someone different from what we've had.

Would it be a stretch to ask people like Klinnsmann,or Dunga(who is a free agent, and former Brazil manager)
You dont ask...you dont get.

But we need someone with abit of experience that can take us to the next level,a winner.

Its a huge relieved McInnes went to the Huns,as the media would be throwing his name around constantly.

There needs to be a root and branch change in Scottish football before any national manager can succeed.

Who knows what Scottish managers are being taught at these coaching courses they go on to get their badges, but it looks like utterly bland pish. It’s quite sad the number of Scottish managers who’ve fallen into the pragmatic archetype - Clarke, Moyes, McInnes, Ross, Pressley, Naismith, and as you say Gray… Maloney tried something different but didn’t have the personality to get the message over.

The only Scottish manager really doing something different with any level of success is McGlynn, and that’s down to him learning under Rogers at Celtic (first time, when he was good).

If Motherwell can find an Askou, maybe the SFA can pull a rabbit out the hat… won’t hold my breath, but then again Maxwell has only had to appoint one Scotland manager so far.

I've voted for Kasper Hjulmand as he is16/1 to be Scotland's next manager and I've already had a small punt on him. You never know.

If it's from the names banded about, then Ange,
Like the idea of Martinez though.

No idea why folk are all of a sudden wanting Ange to be honest but it seems as though folk think he's a beetlejuice character so if they say his name 3 times it'll happen.

Ange is a bit of a character, continental manager with some success, his football at Celtic was alright. Knows the league and fans.

Thats my reasons against the others.
Just wanted to join the discussion though, no campaigning for anyone 🙂

Sacked after less than 2 months at Nottingham Forest. Failed at Spurs. Did okay at celtic by bringing in a bunch of decent Japanese players. I've got my fingers crossed it's not going to be him.

He might bring McMaeda, McNakamura and McKyogo intae the squad.

I don't think Mcglynn will get the respect from the senior players in the squad. I could see lots of last minute call offs in the same manner as when berti and levein we're at the helm.

He definitely deserves to be considered but I think they will do what they always do and appoint someone like Naismith or Fletcher.

I voted for Ange as he offers something different.. I don't think he'd be interested but it's certainly worth exploring imo.

Pretty harsh that. He had Tony Ralston and Greg Taylor looking like Cafu and Carlos, so he can coach.

Forrest I’ll give you, but how is winning the Europa League with Spurs failing? If anything, the shambles they were this season shows they were wrong to sack him.

He also has a track record at international level, something not many of the other names have.

I like the idea of Kasper Hjulmand, who also has an international track record, although he did just “fail” at Beyer Leverkusen.

Probably won’t be either of them, but I’d rather them than another dour pragmatist.

We could go down the hardman route and go for Roy Keane with Big Duncan Ferguson as assistant..😱 The players wouldn't dare call off and then play the following weekend. 😁

Dunc would dominate Roy, be as well hiring them the other way about 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Moyes is on a reported £240,000 a week, so there's nae chance the SFA will come close to paying that. Even if Ange wanted half of that, we still couldn't pay that.

A disaster just waiting to happen. Dunc was shite at Inverness and not much better at forest green and Keane hasn't managed for 15 years. Adjoining those two would be ludicrous and if you think players wouldn't call off you're sadly mistaken. They're more likely to call off given the managerial "geniuses" those two would be.

I'm perhaps being a bit harsh to say he failed at Spurs but they sacked him and then forest sacked him so I'd rather not have him.

It was all very 'tongue and cheek' Dub.. No way would I throw their hats into the ring. A boxing ring may be a different story though! 😁

I think he rubs owners up, it’s his way or no way. Which tbh that’s exactly what we need. No fucking about. Likes to attack.
I like him

Noticed that Ghana have a former Real Madrid manager incharge.

We should really be trying to push the boat out on a good manager.

Im sure there would be many excellent managers that effectively would have to work part time, get paid well...and would like to sample Scotland as a team and country.

Simply not interested in Naismith,Brown and crap like that.

Apparently the assistant and backroom staff were all paid part time by the SFA and Clarke was the the only full time paid manager. There's no chance the SFA will push the boat it as sadly as that is.

The ones who have jobs with other clubs and who therefore only work part time with Scottish NT are paid part time (Andrew Hughes for example is at Leicester), others like Naismith are full time. That makes sense.

I hope @Dub is right on this one.
If anything was to show why we're so far behind, it would be this, if true.

I know they don't work every week in the same way as a club manager, but it's still a full time job if you're gonna do it right. Surely?

Not sure he failed at spurs . He won a European cup there first trophy in years . Look at spayed the following season ( almost relegated ) I would take Ange as 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿manager
