Do people ever question their motives for going on the show? I am referring not so much to those who just want a lift up the ladder or the tone deaf zombies who have been egged on by their adoring but misled parents and pub mates, but those who come on the show and make statements like: I just want this, you have to put me through, it's all I've ever wanted...dreamed of...and the biggest laugh of all, I just want to be famous!!!

That last one really takes the biscuit! I just want to be famous! Ok I accept that most are just star struck teenagers, drooling over Simon or Cheryl, but have they asked therselves the next obvious question?

Why do you crave fame so much?
Herein lies many social ills. The following is a short and definately not extensive list of reasons why they feel the need to be famous

They have watched other people make the grade and want to be in the spotlight
They want the money
They don't want to work at any menial job...fair enough to that one I say.

Their parents showed them no love
Their parent showed them too much love...spoiled them
They were unpopular at school....and this would bring a sense of acceptence
They were very popular at school and they think therefore it is obvious the whole world will like them

I could go on and on but you get the point.

Wanting to be famous for the sake of it is such a shallow ideaology or dream. People generally become famous...or infamous based on what they do/achieve in life, they do not set out to be famous. Our own society get things back to front, for example worshipping film stars who play the part of people who have accomplished deeds, but somehow have slipped to a lesser importance than the star who played them.

I doubt the world will change. I know of many religious and not: (using this as a general term so as not to include/nor exclude persons) who do not follow sport, because they do not like the malice involved, and the elevation of nondescript teenagers to superstar status, but without the savvy to be a role model of any sort...or that they seemingly become more important than people in other occupations who do jobs many could not, but enjoy a fraction of the wage of a sportsman/pop/film star. A volunteer medical person dealing with ebola or a UN soldier trying to keep the peace in a war zone for example.

I guess it is the way of the world and the sharp end of materialism, and I don't blame people for wanting to make a few quid to bring some financial security...but I do wish they would engage their tongue with any brain cells they may have and come up with a better reason for wanting to do something than..."I want to be famous". I bet the guy who killed John Lennon had similar thought.

I would do it just to drool over Cheryl. She's quite a pretty girl.

More seriously, there are folk out there who just want to be famous for being famous. In my book probably no worse than being famous because your mum and/or dad was famous. Saddos was the term used when I was fam.... young.

My son's ambition is to play professional football. It's a long hard road.

The same is true for singers. XFactor offers a short cut

Thats why I said i dont mind the ones who see it that way..the ones of course who have genuine ability, and preferably someone who can write their own songs would be nice, though I appreciate many great singers did not write their own material.

Sadly the X factor freaks are the tip of an iceberg. I read recently that 30 years ago surveys of school-kids on career ambition had things like doctor or lawyer topping the results, where nowadays it's pop star, sports star etc

What a fuck up our grand social experiment is turning out to be.

All these talent competitions are pure cr@p and yet they seem to remain popular. And they always have been, cr@p and popular. Those of a certain age can look as far back as Opportunity Knocks. Bobby fukcing Crush ! The new format talent competitions are not about finding talent, it's about finding cheap to make programs that will keep the viewer engaged enough that sponsors will buy advertising time. So even if you are really cr@p, you can achieve a certain amount fame or infamy that will last for 15 minutes. It's a sorry state of affairs but people will go on these competitions, make a total fool of themselves and still have a bit of fame down their local boozer for being the twit that made an @rse of them self on the TV. As far as I can tell, very few people that win these competitions have genuine talent and actually go on to be really successful. I think the bulk of them that have a modicum of talent end up on cruise ships ?

How much does a top surgeon earn? If he earns as much in a year as Wayne Rooney and co get in a week i'd be surprised.

I think the main difference between that crap talent show and all the more recent crap talent shows is merely the availability of these shows for the masses. Back in the OpKnocks era [as you know] there was no informationsuperhighway, no social media and no real celebrity culture [which for the most part stemmed from the other two]. Reality TV is nowt new, merely the way it can be presented now as opposed to then.
