not a surprise to know just how far off the truth we are, fed daily by tabloids and unwilling to think critically about things.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/british-public-wrong-about-nearly-everything-survey-shows-8697821.html

It's a fact made worse by the internet and a tendency to overstate, for rumours to circulate etc. But equally just the smallest time spent actually looking into things you believe, have been told etc can pay dividends

they missed oot gunts fans thinking they are a big team :fyi:

"The research, carried out by Ipsos Mori from a phone survey of 1,015 people aged 16 to 75"

Quite a comprehensive survey from a population thought to be around 63.2 million don't you think?. (source Office for National Statistics, 2011 Census)

ONS do good stats, no doubt about it.

Ipsos Mori do good stats too - but you have to know who employed them and how the questions were framed and analysed. Suppose the same is true for ONS!

Theres more in the actual questions than the answers.

Some beauts in there. Not sure I believe all the official stats either though, which I suspect goes to Arthur's point.

We live in a very ideological time, despite things being presented as otherwise. Any stat which has a political or ideological colouring is sadly suspect.

The official stats are about as independent as we're ever likely to get, subject to what I cynically said above. No honestly, they are subject to rigorous scrutiny. FACT. END OFF [sic]

Your post sounds as though you are unlikely to consider even the most independent of stats. If that's the case how can you possibly form a proper judgement?

I certainly would consider independent stats. Where can we find those?

Well as I said even ONS can be 'tainted', not by political pressure as such but within the parameters they work, which are set by parliament - if you know what I mean. I know folk in very senior positions there and they fiercely defend their independent status.

So IMO ONS* are as independent as you can get for UK related stats.

On an international level governments are signed up to international guidelines and agreements so for comparative stats on basic information they're normally pretty good these days.

So I would take most of them.

Other government departments have an interest so can be prone to putting a slant on things to suit that interest but generally are pretty decent.

Forget everything else. Those who pay for the stats get the answers they want.

*The Scottish Government, being responsible for certain things, have Departments and units covering what ONS do and they work within the same guidelines and stuff.
