Wayne Rooney

For years I thought Rooney was overrated. He certainly flopped in the big international tournaments and too often his fiery temper got the better of him. Then I look at the stats and in football stats tell you everything you need to know.

He is the all time top goalscorer for both Manchester United and England. Think of all the great world class strikers who have played for both over the years and Rooney outshines all of them. What a career he has had. I've seen him play three times. First time was against Hibs in a pre-season friendly for Everton when he was about 16. He scored twice then got into a punch up with Tam McManus and was sent off. Second time was for Everton against Tottenham at White Hart Lane when he came on as a sub late on, too late to influence the game as Spurs were leading 4-1 at the time, the the third time was for Everton at Goodison Park a few years ago when I was down there for the week-end. He never really impressed me much in any of those games, but when you see his record and what he has achieved he is certainly one of the greatest players of his generation.

Don't know how he will cope as a manager. It takes a certain type to do that job. A thick skin is the first thing you need, bottle, tactical awareness, motivational skills and and eye for a player all vital. The pressures are immense at that level but the rewards are great. Good luck to him.
