I know people buried in a cemetery are long gone but do you think it's acceptable for folk to take their dogs in for walks/their business?

Personally I don't. I think it's really disrespectful.

What if the deid folk were dog lovers? You’re denying them canine cuddles in the afterlife.

Why would you? Surely there's plenty other places. Mind you there's a big difference between say Mortonhall and Warriston.

Depends on many variables.....if a chihuahua did a little piss on old Granny Emeralds grave, Id mibbies think, "FFS"... but if this mofo walked up tae Mercers and took a big shiny shit on it, I'd probably rejoice

So it should be rest in p*ss essentialy. Folk pay alot of money for a plot and a stone. If that was one of my relatives I wouldn't be happy with people doing that. Public parks are for dog walkers, not cemeteries. Interesting most people seem to think this is OK behaviour.

I was at a funeral held at the graveside recently and someone brought their dog with them. It wasn't the family dug, the owner was a neighbour, but decided to bring the (well behaved) mutt with them. I found it a bit weird.

It's allowed by law, dog on lead though. The issue I have is a few I know are an absolute disgrace in terms of upkeep, whether it's rubbish everywhere, piles of leaves, overgrown grass or gravestones falling over - that's disrespectful. I don't think the dogs are bringing in cans of lager or bottles of spirits either...
Obviously letting the dog do their business on the grave itself is a big no no, otherwise walking round no issue.

I think I must live in another universe here. As I pointed out originally It's really disrespectful and just wrong to be walking your pets over where people are buried IMO. It's not a public park. It's the owners, not the dogs that are the issue here. Just because it hasn't been outlawed doesn't make it right. But yeah some interesting responses here.

You go to the park and it's glass and rubbish everywhere, discarded takeaways and sweets, dogs running around off lead shitting everywhere etc etc. I avoid town as much as possible and put my dog in the car and out to the local countryside.

Just saw this thread and it reminded me of a time I was living in Broughton. I took my dog out for a walk through St Marks Park and along the cycle path to the old warriston cemetery. Near to the old B&Q.
Anyway as I passed the graveyard I decided to go in for a look. Next thing this guy stepped out from behind a bush and just stared at me..I walked another few metres and another guy popped out..then I saw another...I about turned and started walking out when I noticed other guys hanging around looking at me...oddest day of my life thankfully my dog was with me and would have tore them to shreds but i still felt a sense of fear...its like I stepped into the middle of some seedy gay meet or something.

It probably was a gay meet. I used to frequent Warriston cemetery as a laddie, great memories of scaring the girls then comforting them if you know what I mean 😛
Anyway, decades later I was back visiting Edinburgh and decided to go to some of my old haunts. Couldn't find an unlocked gate at Warriston and asked a local what the score was. He told me the council had locked it as it was being used by "gays and druggies" (his words, I make no comment)
My son tells me it's open now and quite a pleasant walk.

Just a bit creepy to walk your dug in a cemetry. By all means take it with you when your going to the cemetry to lay flowers etc. Each to their own.

The last time I visited a graveyard was when we were in Moffat... there's a right old one there. I like reading the old stones from the 1700s or 1800s as it gives u a picture of what their life was like. Sometimes I'll pick away the grass or pick up litter.... one time we were up near the cairngorms and found a really old abandoned grave yard on the edge of a field.... right at the edge there was one grave stone really stood out because the person had died 200 years to the day we visited..What an odd coincidence.... would be nice if I was buried and someone visited my grave 100 years down the line.....hopefully without a dog 🤣

Oh the 'I was only walking my dog' excuse.
