Everyone is blaming everyone else with, not surprisingly, Ryan Air trying to dodge their responsibilities.
In all this I see 3 main issues.
In place before the eruption were regulations with zero tolerance flying through volcanic ash. Volcanoes have been erupting, yes even at this scale, all over the world. The difference has been when its happened elsewhere its been relatively easy to avoid the ash and therefore the disruption.
Aircraft and engine manufactures, airlines and holiday companies have had decades, since the jet engine was invented, to have the zero tolerance changed to the level it is now apparently safe to fly with. For these people to blame the governments for not acting quickly enough, about 5 days in my reckoning, when they themselves could have brought it up any time over the last 50+ years is nonsense.
In place before the eruption, and before Ryan Air even entered the market, were regulations which stated airline and holiday companies have a duty of care type responsibility for its passengers. Answer. Almost the same as above, these injured parties have had eons to challenge these rules they all of a sudden find archaic and unfair.
Worse is that apparently there is insurance available to them that covers this very event. You can be assured the cost of that insurance would have been passed on to the customers but while companies, in particular Ryan Air, sting you for everything; crap food, queuing, luggage and even considering spending a penny will cost a quid, they have made the decision not to take insurance in order to cut costs/increase profits.
BTW. Anyone else notice the early contradiction where Ryan Air were illegally refusing to compensate passengers but were looking for compensation from the government?
Not in place before the eruption. Nowhere can I find anything that makes it the governments, or EUs, responsibility to repatriate folk, or pay compensation to anyone, unless I think they're in the likes of a war zone. Where are all these folk getting off blaming all the European governments for doing nothing? They were actually doing more than was necessary, showing compassion, which was more than others who were actually responsible.
Why did folk spend vast sums and journey over days attempting to get home rather than spend the money on accommodation where they were? Mob panic? OK maybe some would have lost jobs and I can see why they would have wanted to get home, but not the 1,000s you saw lining up everywhere.
You just know the fallout for this is going to rumble on and on.
So.
