UK weather

I managed to avoid the heat for an hour spent in a lovely cool MRI scanner but came home and decided to cut the grass (late afternoon) and I struggled in the heat. Cool 17 degrees here this morning which is fine by me.

It's the hottest indoors I can remember. The bedroom I use as my WFH "office" was showing 30 DegC yesterday with windaes open and fan blasting! Seriously considering getting some kind of portable air con.

I'm thinking of moving to Shetland or the Faroes

No complaints from me. The weather's shite most of the time. This is what you want.

I've got a wee tan from taking the bairn to the Safari Park on Sunday.

Working from home today, window open, shorts and t-shirt on, ice in my Vimto and some Beach Boys on the record player in the background.

Off to the fanzone at the 02 Academy in Glasgow tonight for the game, probably won't need a jacket and the beers will be extra refreshing.

Loving it, long may it continue.

Now that you mention it 😆

I'm off on a cruise tomorrow, just booked it last week 🤣, Shetland, Orkney and Lewis. The weather forecasts are 15⁰, light rain or drizzle and breeze. Midge forecast good (for me, not the Highlands terrorists).
Sounds like a nice cruise Jack. Any details?

Here's a wee map.

One day in each of the ports. We've booked tours at two stops taking in lots of scenes and neolithic sites, including the Standing Staines of Callanish.

The highlight for me will be sailing under the three bridges and past Edinburgh, Leith and down then up the shores of the Firth of Forth.

Do you get close to the cliffs at Troup Head?

I hope so! It's called 'scenic cruising' and we've got a load of it next year when we do Antarctica! If past experience is anything to go by I doubt we'll be less than half a mile. Probably weather dependant.

I'll post a photo on Friday.
Great RSPB bird reserve there. Good spot for seeing puffins and gannets at the right time of year.

Have you checked with Ryan about Antarctica? I don’t think the public are allowed to go there.

Doing my first ever cruise in January, if enjoyable then I fancy Antarctica cruise. Which company are you using Jacko?

I use various cruise lines and travel agents.

I've looked at various for Antarctica. There's two types; expedition and scenic cruising.

Expedition is boots on the ground stuff and really expensive reflecting the smaller better equipped ships and the licences required for going ashore. Too rich for us!

There's a few cruise lines do the scenic cruising. We were on Holland America Line on our recent trip round Japan, Alaska and Canada. It's upper end for us I think, but we've not tried all lines! We like the [mostly] informal feel. You could get poshed up if you like, join in the parties if you like. The restaurants were very good to fantastic, a good selection of bars and general places to hang out. We were in a standard balcony and it compared well with other cruise lines we've been with, suites apparently fantastic to match the price!

First stop in travel agents is Iglu who give a good price to base others on. Then I negotiate with a local travel agent, maybe even Barrhead Travel who sometimes put on cruise events where I've blagged a wee bonus or two 😉

Back to Iglu. On our Japan trip they had a deal, in conjunction with a local company that got us a couple of trips in Tokyo, transfers everywhere and other stuff. Even with that it was the cheapest quote by a couple of grand!

For South America and Antarctica the have a package that includes organise trips to the Iguazu Falls in Argentina and at the other end Machu Picchu in Peru.

We're not adding that on, it's too long away from home, 35+ days.

Be wary of longer trips. House insurance might only allow single trips of upto 35 days and holiday insurance single trips upto 32 days. There will also be a maximum for cancellation, normally £10k a couple. Be sure cruise cover is included in your policy.

Where are you off to? Better not be the Caribbean 😎

I wid like tae go on a cruise but the missus winnae go on a boat. Takes a lot for her tae go up in a plane.
I missed the Motherwell game last month because we were away. I miss the Motherwell game in August tae.
I'm trying tae get more air miles than Jack and the good Doc but I'm gonni have tae see if I can get 10 days on fuckin Jupiter. 🚀

Its a well known fact that you cant.

You can however goto a couple of islands.

One is funnily enough called deception island.

You couldn't make it up....

You can do a 3 Bridges Tour leaving from South Queensferry opposite The Hawes Inn

10:30 am. Pissed off there was nae music through the headphones though - just bleeps, bangs and “breathe in, breathe out, hold your breath”. The wee nurse was hot though :giggley:

I thought it was the Mrs that was getting one - did you get a 2 for 1?
No. She had hers at Woodend for the aftermath of the dislocated shoodir!
Mine was at ARI (mobile) for the raised PSA......which went doon after the 2nd blood test!
From 11.5 at 1st blood test to 8 at the 2nd test.
I suppose i should be happy they're keeping tabs on it.
Its just a fuck aboot gan inte eberdeen.

I think most Brits think of high temperatures purely from a holiday time perspective. 30 degrees is maybe pleasant for a week in Spain for example.

Now, none of your buildings are remotely prepared for extended 30 plus temperatures and just thinking about what London will be like in 39 degrees make my sinuses revolt.

We get 30 to 35 degrees for months and yes it has been reaching 40 on the regular in July over the past few years. It is fecking brutal. Genuinely if you haven't had to work and live the day to day in that for weeks you will get a shock. It is not fun and I will guarantee that those saying they like the heat will find that it palls fairly quickly. I have 2 foot thick walls of solid brick and up to 35 it copes fairly well in keeping the worst out. Starts to struggle after that though. And the nights don't cool down enough either so no respite.

Add in the wetter climate of the UK you could get high temperatures PLUS high humidity. A match made in Hell for me! We get down to minus 15 degrees though in the winter. And that is nowhere close to what it used to be and also a fraction of the snowfall that used to be.

Ah the old PSA lottery - I got the t shirt in 2012. Still, good to be “in the system” as you say. I’ve got them coming from all angles now - the latest being the Heart Failure Nurse whose reason for taking over a month to call me was that my referral came as an “old fashioned letter” and not an e mail. She probably had to do a course in envelope opening first!
