Brutal, utterly brutal.

The picture of the players who were injured/suspended and didn't travel is gut wrenching too. They'll be feeling all sorts of shit today. :sad

Very sad news. Apparently the other club have requested that they are given the victory in the final. Also clubs in the league have offered to loan players for free and requested that they can not get relegated for 3 years. Rip

Nacional, who they were going to play in the South American cup final have called on the FA to recognise them as champions;

“After being very worried about the human part we thought about the competitive aspect and we want to publish this statement in which Atletico Nacional ask Conmebol to give the title of Copa Sudamericana be given to the Chapecoense as an honorary award for this great loss, and in posthumous homage to the victims of the fatal accident that impute our sport. For our part, and forever, Chapecoense are champions of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.”

A reminder that for all the shit and pampered prats our game remains the beautiful game.

RIP

I see elsewhere that Cristiano Ronaldo has donated €3 million to this tragedy. Not for the first time has he donated substantial amounts, yet there are still folk who think I'll of the guy.
He maybe one of the world's best footballers but he's certainly one of the world's best human beings

Plane ran out of fuel apparently.

That's what they are saying but I have to say I find this very hard to take in. On any passenger flight the aviation fuel given to a plane before the flight is significantly more than is required for the actual flight. This is to cover adverse weather conditions (eg. head winds or storms slowing the flight down) or having to divert to other airports. The pilot will know the levels of fuel constantly throughout the flight and if there was any sign of fuel levels being low there would have been warnings galore. He then should have requested a landing at the nearest available airport.

I was told he had asked to land earlier in the flight at some point as well? I've not seen it so might be wrong.

They need to fulfil their fixtures, Ronaldinho has signed for free and Riquelme has offered to do the same.

Such a terrible thing :( great to see the gestures all around, the scenes in the stadium were heartbreaking

I read somewhere that the pilot requested to land 3 times!
Great to hear of the football world pulling together on this too though.

I *think* the pilot was part owner of the airline in question, and he made a decision to under fuel based on cost.
The distance of that flight is like Edinburgh to Istanbul, the size of plane and range used on this occasion was like the shuttle used for Edinburgh to London, significantly smaller.

Not the entire world by all accounts

"This week, Brazilian Football Association president Marco Polo Del Nero caused controversy when he insisted that Chapecoense play their next league game against Atlético Mineiro.

“This game has to happen. There has to be a big party,” Chapecoense’s surviving vice-president Ivan Tozzo told Globoesporte. When Tozzo said he had no players, Del Nero replied: “You have the youth team and the players who stayed.”

Atlético have refused to play the game. “We believe in sport, respect the pain, this is not the moment to demand anything of any player,” Daniel Nepomuceno, Atlético’s president told reporters on 1 December"
