BBC News - Too much snow closes ski centre

There's a headline that really takes me back to the early 80's.

My School used to run a coach to Glenshee every Sunday from Jan-Easter. In 82,83 and 84 we had to turn back at Bridge of Cally a few times as the snow gates were down due to enormous drifts.

I also remember the Glenshee car park having a 20ft "cliff" of ploughed snow facing the Tiger run. They had to put fluorescent sticks up to warn people away from it.

One lad from my school always used to bring a "Ghetto Blaster" (U-30's ask yer dads!) to play on the bus, so "U2 live at Red Rocks" always comes into my mind at these times.

I've promised my Youngest a night in Aviemore and a day at Cairngorm on the Ptarmagin for his 12th Birthday in Feb. Cannae wait!

I was up there last week, amazing amount of snow, you could ski bits of Cairngorm that are normally huge boulder fields. Since then it's been blowing a gale from the SE which has picked up all the loose snow from the tops and dumped it in massive drifts lower down. Apparently the funicular track is buried in several places, could be a while till they get it all dug out.

Some photies:

Brian,

Those photo's were exactly what the early 80's were like. Loch Morlich totally frozen over and Coire Cas and Coire na Ciste car parks being skiable. What was the Gunbarrel like? That's my favourite run in the whole of Scotland, and as I said, you could have gone all the way from the top of the Ptarmigan all the way to Ciste car park.

Wonderful!!

Cheers.

Yeah, it's as good as I can ever remember it and I've been going since 1983, when the school minibus used to take us up there on a Sunday, leaving Currie at 5am

Gunbarrel was well filled in last week, with all the drifting it'll probably be flat by now.
