I was on a “Being Your Best Self” course the other day which, much in contradiction to what I expected, was highly enjoyable. Mostly, I think, due to the self-effacing, humourous way the trainer presented it. And because, a rarity in the circles I travel in, no participant was a gob-shite, attention seeking, whining, know-it-all *&*^.
I digress from my point and the thread title. She asked that and I had to think for a bit. In a divisive world, torn apart by our differences it’s something we should maybe contemplate more. My findings were somewhat twee and obvious but maybe profound for all that.
Children: I’m always drawn to their innocence. Their constant questions, their honesty, their wonder. In a room I always gravitate to them and sit and play and laugh. They’re a wonder and a constant lesson. A memory of what we have forgotten. Adults, in comparison, are *&*^.
Cats: They just permanently amuse me. Cutting about in their wee cat world, aloof and superior to the idiocy of humans. Fooling us into working for them and feeding them. I oft drive past one scurrying about its business, suspicious, angrily apropos of nothing suddenly stopping to furiously lick its back, and wonder what their thought process is. Do they perceive as us, see as us, think as us? Fuck knows. But what sort of almighty creator could produce such a thing? “Aye, it’s a cuddly wee furry little dick of a thing (not nice to mice or birds, we all have imperfections) but wait to you see what I’ve made it do when it’s happy.” Purrrrr.
Dogs: Like above but friendlier, stupider and less cunning. And panting/tail-wagging instead of purring.
Music. No idea why but much gratitude of its ubiquity when you realise it hasn’t always been so.
Unexpected kindness. Can come from the most unlikeliest of sources and (almost) restore my faith in the human race.
