One of the three has been told that he'll have to wait 40 years before he can be eligible for release... I can't imagine that he will ever be released frankly.

Does this not make martyrs of the guys?

Not that I know what the alternative is.. and certainly capital punishment would make even bigger martyrs of them.:sad

Anyway, What is the longest sentence that can be dished out in the UK?

Life.

As in the rest of your natural life.

Ian Brady will only leave jail in a box.

He is trying to get transferred to Scotland because he thinks he wont be force fed and will be allowed to kill himself by starvation.

Full life sentences tend to handed down to serial killers who the majority of the population know about and are quite happy to see rot in jail.

I am sure I heard that, in Scotland, life can be as little as 9 years.

I thought life meant about 14-15 years in jail and if you plead guilty early and have good behaviour it could be as little as 6-7 years in jail.

I always understood it that "Life" imprisonment always has the option of an earlier release . This is so that the incarserated always have an incentive to behave whilst in Jail.

Otherwise, if the judge say's to some nutter "That's you fucked it , pal. You'll die in jail" , he will no longer have any controlling mechanism on his behaviour ie "I'll just kill these prison guards , as you cant do any worse..."
