The Holocaust 80 years on.

Was watching coverage over lunch. Very sobering. Sausage fingers actually spoke quite well on Britain’s behalf.

Sadly BK looks to be correct. As ww2 taboos fade, anti semitism is roaring back.

Visited Auschwitz/Birkenau back in 2014 and did the guided tour there. Nothing can prepare you for it.
The sheer scale of the whole thing is overwhelming.....the very depths that human beings can sink to.

IMO the allies knew in the early 1940's that Auschwitz and the other death camps existed and where they were, and what they were doing.
They should have been targeted and destroyed early in the war.

I haven’t visited Auschwitz/ Birkenau, but I have been to Bergen Belsen. Like you say, nothing can prepare you for it, it’s a sobering moment. It shows how evil and cruel mankind can be.

Once the regime changes in Russia I think tours of the Concentration Camps and the Gulags should be taught.

Many millions died on the Gulags that folk on the left over here ignored.

The starvation of our now allies the Ukrainians needs to be highlighted.

Anywhere between 6/10 million starved in Ukraine before the war.

I know this thread is about one particular time in history. But the soviet gulag was just as bad and hateful.

Kolyma

You ever heard of Kolyma? It was part of the Russian Gulag system.

Many many hundreds of thousands of folk were worked to death in the gold mines and mineral mines.

I read the book about Kolyma and the poem at the end was quite poignant.....

“My friends, I’m now 30 years old,
My youth is over and my hour is nigh,
Miseries have passed, nay flown, me by
Like minutes, like dreams of bygone days.
I long for kindness and tenderness,
Like a fairytale told to little children..
My heart asks me repeatedly where I will find love.
I’m sick of life, I see no break in the clouds..
So would it not be better to finish it all
When the dawn comes?
One minute and then forever oblivion….”

Pavel Kalinkovich

2025 and antisemitism remains rife around the globe and sadly has creeped into our fine nation with much of the population complacent or indifferent.

Don’t be afraid to call it out people. They cannot win.

I don’t think I could handle a visit there - the Twin Towers museum was more than enough for me.

Here's ITV News mentioning the 6 million "people" killed in the Holocaust. What people were they then? 🤔

That is fucking staggering, not least because other groups are enumerated. The left wing establishment are completely out of control.

The presenter would have been on her way to one of these camps with an ethnicity and name like that………….she’s clearly forgotten and missed a point, your right indefensible.

I went 18 months ago. You think you know what to expect, but nothing can prepare you for it. I came out a changed man, I really did.
I have read so much about it since .
You may be correct, but I don’t think the allies did have much of an idea of what was going on, and if they did , I’m not too sure they could have done much about it, considering everything else which was going on. The Germans claimed they didn’t know about the death camps, and not many people got out to tell the tale.
I still don’t wholly understand where the hatred of the Jews came from , and why it manifested itself into such a horrendous slaughter. It makes me very wary of anyone who chooses to hate a certain religion with vengeance, and blames them for everything. It’s a very dangerous road to go down, regardless of the provocation.

I did the Belsen one.
Unlike Auschwitz, not much is left of the camp as it was during the war, but the mass graves dotted around the grounds is quite sobering.
Some with 1500 souls, some with 2-3 thousand.
They had built a new indoor museum with the artefacts in viewing cases ,some on the floor.
And a small theatre with a loop video showing the horror.
I suppose the only pleasing thing was the amount of German School children attending.
Some of them very visibly upset.
Hope maybe?

She’ll be reading from an auto cue. Someone will have scripted that I suspect.

Today’s commemorations have been truly moving, in a few years there will be no living holocaust victims……………..will the memories and the stories die with them ?.

Let’s hope not, perhaps I should have more faith in humanity.
I'd settle for us not having another one, something i no longer have a ton of confidence in

I never knew ITV were part of the left wing establishment.

And yet Dier there are fuckers who would berate my dad as a war wongerer.

He was conscripted. Never volunteered.

How many on here would go to war now to protect 'our way of life's ?

Done both , both horrendous but the numbers at auschwitz mind blowing. Walking through the gates at auschwitz to the end of the line where they were chosen for death or work, the piles of belongings, children's shoes, human hair , suitcases and the photographs. Truly horrific

Paignton for as bad and evil the camps are why not visit the Gulags?

Millions more killed. Far more bones to find.

Millions of folk who looked like us died.

Yet many of the millions of Jews sent to their deaths were willingly gave up by host nations.

Everyone suffered in WW2. My dad had no sense of taste or smell and shrapnel in his foot since 1943.

There has to be my knowledge three holocausts.

Who can name them?

whats that got to do with it?
Eh because Jews were slaughtered. So why did nations give them up?

Why did no nation give a Donald duck about sending them to their deaths ?

Sending folk to their deaths has a lot to do with things.

Barney
Can you tell me a country that never gave the Jews up volunterily to the Nazis?

Well in these modern times it's guilt by association is it not?
