The good old days?

why was it bad for women and kids?

the data kind of supports the good old days theory of the 50s - in a way that it doesn't support the 70s nostalgia that seems to be replacing it.

It was a time of low crime - non-reporting possibly an element but not enough to change the picture. Things generally on the up for the working classes, people happier and more content etc. In the US the prospects of black people were getting much better though the reforms of the early 60s were not yet in place obviously. All in all progress's zenith, before the revenge of the haute bourgeois and the new left in the late 60s, which soon got things headed back to the historical norm. A pity really. On the other hand, some of the conditions for the 50s were established by a catastrophic war so it's not necessarily something to try and recreate!

All the conditions for the 50s were established by the war surely..

i don't think so, afaik there was a continuance of prior trends at work too, and this also in the US where society was less impacted by the war.

Think USA was impacted differently. (prosperity). They had total war as the uk and dominions did. So disagree a tad with the US being less impacted..imho

I can't think of any facet of life in the 50s not a consequence of that war tbh.

personally think that the good ole days have never existed Things dont always change for the better I agree, but fuck bunnets and shit pints :worthy

I think you're right in general. We seem to have moved from the 50s being seen as a golden age to the 70s. The former case seems to me to be about nostalgia for the era before the changes of he 60s, the latter for an era before the changes of the thatcher era. The 50s were before my time and I was only a child in the 70s but I wouldn't want to go back to the latter and I expect if I'd experienced the former then I also wouldn't want to go back to that. Nevertheless I think that data shows certain things were on the up culminating in the early 60s, which have since gone into reverse. There's a taking he rough with the smooth thing to consider though.

It seems to me that Women were treated like shit back then and the phrase kids should be seen but not heard springs to mind.
I'm not saying it's rosier now by any stretch,i just don't think it was ever that rosy...

I'm not sure they were treated worse -
All those women left holding babies or abused by a parade of feckless men are on the other side of the scales weighed against those trapped in abusive marriages

Many would put all those women on the same side of the scales.

I had taken the point to be that women are better off now as they do not have to be trapped in abusive marriages; the flipside is todays situation.
