There was the Bolton keeper whose testimonial we were at last year. Money went to charity.
As suggested already though theyll become rarer than hens teeth in the top leagues.
I do think that maybe there will be more in the lower divisions were part-time players have to stay in their local area to keep the job that guarantees the mortgage gets paid.
Testimonials were there as a sort of pension for players when they retired so that they could buy their pub or whatever. 5% or 10% of a small transfer fee wouldnt have gone all that far even in these days; reasonable wages kept players living in the same sort of houses / areas as many of the fans. They were normal people, thoughts of millionaire status and celebrity lifestyle would have had the tears rolling down their cheeks.
Now a days, even look at some of the returning (and potential returning) Hibs players. If they're not millionaires they're damn close; players own pubs and they're barely out their teens; they dont have a house in Leith they have houses, mansions and somewhere abroad; they drive cars most of can only really dream of and Hibs players and the rest of the SPL are the paupers in comparison.
And you think I might shell out 20/30 to make them even richer?
[I know this isnt quite want you meant Dub]
