Three quarters of British tax payers agree that we should not pay for the Pope's visit.

Taxpayers 'should not pay for Pope'

12 million PLUS policing costs is way out of order. Schools are closing down here in Edinburgh yet public money is being squandered on bread and circuses. The Catholic Church are minted. Let them foot 100% of the bill if they want to send their top man on a PR tour.

Thoughts?

Hardly think its fair to take this in isolation.
.
How much is spent on other heads of state visits - do we pick up the tab for that? I suspect we do.
.
What benefit will come of the visit? Will it boost local economies by say 12+m???
.
Does the UK contribute to Bettys or the PMs official overseas visits?
.
He's passing my work, I might pop out for a ciggy at the right time so he can wave to me!

I'm not bothered whether he comes or not BUT the exposure Edinburgh will get in the media across the world means whatever portion we pay will be matched and bettered by the tourist pound in coming years.

Any visit by a head of state to Edinburgh is a good thing.

Not sure what other state visits have been significantly funded by means other than the taxpayer?

Maybe we wouldn't need so many policing costs if this benighted isle wasn't so such a dark redoubt of anti-popery?

It's shaping up as I forecast recently; the UK is exposed as a far more intolerant place than it was in '82. 13 Years of extreme left wing government is no doubt part of the reason.

I couldnt give flying if he visits or not....I do object though to my hard earned taxed being spent on any religious\ political\royal \bawbags who want to visit...doesnt make me intolerant...if they want to promoto what ever cause \ religion they beleive in then they should pay for it themselves. Nowt but marketing campaigns at our expence.:banger:

As I have said before, I have managed to wrangle 3 days of well paid (and much needed) work for the dastardly geezers gig at Bellahouston Park. Let me assure you that I will be putting our tax 's back into the local economy, and that I believe I will be earning more than any clergy members during the Papal visit. I won't be at the gig, nor the visit to Edinburgh simply because I have issues with the guy and his establishment but my (protestant) partner is very much looking forward to the visit to Scotland of one of the worlds most famous and influential people. Personally i would be more inclined to visit his procession if he were to hold one of the famous 'papal audiences' with the victims or representatives of clergy sex abuse. Of course there is no evidence to suggest that Mr XVI has been involved in any wrongdoings himself, but as head of the church he should be the one who tackles the problem head on.

As taxpayers in a democracy im sure there are areas where our taxpayer money goes that we all object to.

In my case , some examples are the 2.9 billion per year spent on policing / NHS / social services costs to deal with the aftermath of our binge drinking culture ; the NHS costs spent on our self inflicted illegal drugs and nicotine addictions and the 20 billion thats gonna be spent on replacing Trident. I cant remember offhand what the Embra G8 summit cost in policing / security terms but thats another example of something we paid for as taxpayers which I wasnt in favour of. More recently I wasnt too happy that we paid for the Pakistan PMs UK visit when he was leaving behind a major disaster. Those are the breaks of the national purse ... we arent gonna agree with all that its spent on.

Put in terms of overall taxpayer money spent the Popes visit costs are a drop in the ocean. And how much more or less they are than the costs for other world leaders visits :dunno: The fact that those costs have produced a level of hostility out of all proportion to the amount involved.... :hmmm
