Following on from a thread months back (which I can no longer find), I checked with my solicitor about discharging the security over my house (mortgage paid off 16 years ago). Just been told the cost is £175 + vat + £80 recording fees. Just paid them £1,000 a few months ago for wills and Powers of Attorney too. Mates’ rates? Aye right.

Lawyers fees are a bastard the world over. My will over here, quoted 12000 baht. Haggled and got 6000 baht. Told if we stuck with them any future dealings would get a good discount.
1 year later wife's will, quoted 15000 baht, reminded them of their offer and got 6000 baht again on the agreement that I gave them good reviews on social media. Sadly for them that was just as I was binning all my social media accounts.

Our solicitor was in my class at school - I wish I’d stuck in!

It's up to the individual if you want to have a Standard Security discharged after paying off the mortgage, however it will need to be done anyway if and when you come to sell the house at any time.

Aye my thoughts were get it done while we’re still alive and (almost) compus mentus to save our offspring the hassle and expense.
