Sorting what happens when you die

OK first off, sorry this initially appears as a depressing subject.

But please believe me, it's not.

It's so fucking important, for a multitude of reasons.

I'm posting about it because I have experienced it in my family in the past few years; and because my wife's family is going through it right now.

I reckon we will all be aware of the typical advice given; but have you thought it through in terms of how your own family will deal with it all?

Here's a couple of issues I've seen that were pretty much unforeseen:

Of your beneficiaries, are there any who will end up with way less than you want due to tax?

Have you picked executors who can, or will, pay for financial advice when they need it?

Are you aware that folk can make claims on your estate regardless of your will?

This last one is a bit less formal, but fuck it I'm saying it: beware that family members you trust can change when you croak it.

Please believe that one. Holy fuck.

Anyway. Have yous got decent plans in place? And the question is for all btw. No just the auld bams like the doc.

Told all my kids they're getting nowt. Cos there's nowt to leave them. The condo and the car is in my Thai wife's name and the scooter is mine.
I have quite firm views about this. Thai will written and lodged with a Thai lawyer.
Adult children need to make their own way in life as us old fuckers did.

All taken care of here, apart from the fact that our named executor passed away so we need to change our wills again - no doubt that will cost too. My thoughts are that opportunities to “get on in life” are actually fewer for upcoming generations than they were for us so we want to give them as much as we can, both now and after we shuffle off.

Oh, no will exists. But there is hardly any of my family left and I have no siblings so UK side is probably dull and clear. Hungarian side I suppose we would need to make absolutely clear that the Sister in Law can eff off in no uncertain terms as she is the money grabbing sort who would be ok with our kids being destitute if she got a little more for herself. She is an Estate Agent so borderline evil and criminal.

Just keep enough back for a one way trip to Switzerland and will be fine.........

I would like a Viking style funeral pire though.......... But who cares what happens to the body after death really, bury or burn, but nothing else actually.... Never can trust humans.

I'm sure I've signed something else too but I can't remember what 😆

Everyone who's getting something knows exactly what they're getting and they're happy.

Funeral paid for but I need to sort out tunes. Some folk have said my funeral is going to end up like a nightclub!

Nae greeting, sing louder at the back 😆

I knew my mum was dying. It was lovely to discuss with her what she would like said at her funeral. Talking through her life. Not that I didn't know most of it. But when you are in the moment and they die you have brain fog. The only thing I didn't discuss was music. Anyway we're in the funeral directors brain storming what music she would like played. My sister came up with Devil Women by Cliff Richard & had a nervous laugh. We left the funeral directors and as soon as I got home I phoned the funeral directors & told them I was dealing with all matters concerned and my sister was having fk all to do with it.
Yes people do become funny & somewhat aggressive when money is involved. I was accused of stealing my mum's money, but when she actually went through everything I was using my own money just so that was one less thing for my mum to worry about as I knew I would get it all back.
No wonder I was her favourite 🤣

Timely thread.

I've got no plans in place. It really brought it home to me when I was ill last year and I suddenly realised what a mess I might leave.

A financial and admin mess before you ask.

I've still done nothing about it which is stupid. Me and the Mrs keep saying we should get married (I know) before we write our wills but it's hard to find the right time because most of the time I think she hates me.

I'd hate me too to be fair.

I did scribble out a sort of will once when I was going off on a fairly dangerous trip but that probably doesn't count does it?

It's that time of year again when there's the offer of 'free' wills kicking about. Whoever sponsors it will likely want a wee donation.

Another thing that folk might want to consider is who each of you is paying bills to and how much. Like I said elsewhere Mrs Jackie deals with all that sort of stuff but we now have a detailed list of all our monthly/regular outgoings so I know who needs paid and how much. Even if she was hospitalised things could get messy pretty quickly.

We did the “free wills” with our bank 34 years ago. When we went back a few years ago to update them, the bank had no record of them - beware of “free” stuff.

We got our wills done for a donation under a 'free' scheme 10 years ago. Just made an appointment with the same solicitors because we need to make some changes. Going to be £250 plus VAT to amend each will now i.e. £600 total.

My wife dealt with POA in her work and has always said the social side of it is actually more important than financial. Everybody should make sure that it is sorted long before it actually becomes necessary.
