Im at a bit of a loose end regarding college courses. I would one day like to be a Social Worker, and have applied for a HNC in Social Care as I believe that's the only way to get me into social working. However I only got offered an NQ as I don't have any experience in the care sector, although my exam results prove I can study at HNC level. To be honest, I don't want to spend a year doing that, then only getting to the HNC afterwards. I have been told that studying Social Sciences is a good place to start also. Has anyone ever studied it? If so, was it any use, or interesting? Any advice would be appreciated. :thumbgrin

I know things are really different from the 80's when I was at college, but HNC's in my day were combinations of your first two years being the old ONC (The NQ thing, I think) and the final two years being the HNC proper. I had four highers when I left school but the day release course I was on lasted for these four years.

Hi there, I am have just finished my 3rd year doing a Social Sciences degree. It is one of the most versatile degree's to have as it open's many doors into different sectors from social work to government positions. You can also do your honours year and with a 2.1 degree result you can continue to do a masters in a relevant subject.

While doing Social Sciences you will come across subjects like Psychology, Sociology, History, Geography, Politics, Philosophy, and varies research method classes. Doing this course has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I have learned a lot of stuff, and also learned to look at things in a different way. Although I am still learning, and do not know anywhere near the amount I would like to know, or probably should know.

Hope that helps. :thumbgrin

:applause::applause::applause:.

Well said. Don't bother with the NC in social care if you can get into an HND social science course. You will find if you want to be a social worker that social science is the best way to go. I wanted to be a social worker and started with my NC in social care only to be told that I was doing the wrong course:dunno:. College I was at didn't do a social science course so had to see the year out before doing my HND in social science at another college.
