Got a freebie for the rugby yesterday so went along. Whole atmosphere compared to a football game is completely different. Ok still got overpriced stalls 4 for beefburger roll etc (though they may be better quality). But least they also got overpriced beer stalls. Cant help feeling they would be better with machines around the place for a lot of the alcohol though. It says on entry not to broiing in bottles or cans then they sell bottles of lager (rip off merchants). Anyway they could use some beer tents but at least there is an option. After the game they had a live band and were going to show the France game on large screens. I am not saying it was all perfect and there are many other things they could have like an area with bouncy castles to amuse the kids or something outside of game hours but the fact is for the so call lesser sport in Scotland they do seem to put a lot more thought and organisation into things.

I could be wrong but didn't most "big games" at Murrayfield used to have things like beer tents and bouncy castles and stuff not too long back. I could possibly be thinking of the old European American Football league when the Claymores used to play, but I think the rugby had them too.

Maybe they just decided that a band and showing the other game was a better thing to do?

As someone who grew up in a family who true enough had football as their first love but which played a lot of rugby aswell I've seen a fair bit of both sides and I would certainly have to agree with you.

I like aspects of both, the raw and vocal side of football supporting can be a lot of fun (within reason) but as an event rugby kinda has it beat hands down, especially if you are bringing along young kids. And you are right, the rugby set up has a lot of room for changes well within what they are already doing.

There were certainly beer tents, bands playing etc before the Claymore games. That was a decent day out.

.....abd speaking of bands, did The Whitburn Band keep you entertained enough and make a good job of the Italian national anthem?

Once got a freebie ticket for the American football at Murrayfield. Yeah, they did have a funfair and beer tents outside and similar attractions. As I regard 'gridiron' as the most borin' sport in the history of the universe these sideshows were far more entertaining than the main event.

Aye it wouldn't be a bad sport if they didn't stop for a 10 minute break every 2 minutes.

Still more watchable than cricket or baseball in my opinion though.

was taking my seat at that point but they seemed to do fine. Only played first verse of Flower of Scotland but the fans made sure the 2nd was also sung

Great I'm sure but Whitburn were the brass band playing the Italian national anthem. I'm the secretary and wasn't there but couldn't hear it right on the telly

Poof!

Just watched it back on the old sky +. Brass band were very good. The Italian anthem is one of the good ones. Good volume from their supporter's as well.

Tbh I've never played a brass instrument and would never have been involved but my son got given one through the school and went on to join the Whitburn Youth Band. Since then I got voted onto the committee and now we're hoping the Youth Band get to be as famous as the senior band when we go to the UK championship in a few weeks having came second at the Scottish.

Very good luck! One of my favourite melodies is Aranjuez. What instrument does your son play?

Started out on Cornet (as most do ) now on euphonium. He got third place at the East of Scotland Solo competition back in November and got a silver award at the Scottish finals last week so he did really well for being the youngest in his section (13 up against 15-16 year olds). Played s level 6 piece - Andante and Scherzo.
I've telt him I expect him to win it in the next 2 years. Nae pressure then.:rollfloor

Good for him! The euphonium is a glorious instrument.
