Im all for Hibs next manager gettin cash to spend, don't get me wrong.
But lets be brutal here. Rod is only doing Hibs favours by saving the cash and not blowin us into a debt hell again. Think of 10 years time. Think of 25 years time. Think of 60 years time.....
Where do you want Hibs to be? Wound up, like other clubs will surely be? I don't. Its our kids and grandkids we need to think about here and the LONG TERM future of HFC. A quick fix is what most want. Rod has other ideas, and i kinda agree with him.

Its a matter of balance really.

I too think Rod is not as bad as some would have us think.

But worse than others paint him.

Chucking higher wages at moderate players is not the answer, as David Murray and 80 million proved.

A balanced programme of investment, coupled with decent talent spotting and coaching is what we need.
Having a new training ground is a fantastic enticement, if Donald Park comes back (?) then thats even better. The odd big (relatively speaking) signing is fine, but wages have to be in an organized fashion.

If the story is true that JC wanted to sign another half decent player (OBrien anyone?) on a wage bigger than other proven players and was KBd then. Im not too bothered frankly.

Petrie is a cantankerous argumentative arrogant bastard. No doubt about that. Is that a bad thing though?

yeah fair enough he has done a great job getting us back into the black.

but selling players isnt the only way to make money. gate receipts must surely make up at least the players wages.

TV deals, newspapers etc.

Football fans are only interested in the short term. going far in cups can raise money, doing well in the league aswell. but to do these you need good players. something that money can buy

Aye, and think of 4 short years ago when we were near-20 Million in debt. He done us a big favour getting us into that fix.

We are now in a state where the finances are solid, and Petrie has to be credited with a lot to do with this, as well as the fans who dug deep over the last few years in the form of ST's, Walk-ups, merchandise, etc.

But we have to raise the bar to take the club to the next level.

And I dont mean the exorbitant spending Petrie allowed a few years back that got us near-extinct.

But we must have funds available that will attract a calibre of player that can take us forward.

Spot on.

Rodders was the CX when we ran up the debt.

But....... how did the debt arise? (Did for instance the top 10 clubs agree a deal with TV only to get shafted by the Old Firm?, or Ginger judas spend money on players he hadn't checked out because he was already on the payroll of derhun?) Or did Rod just get it wrong?

:Shrink15:

Some ridiculous deals were sanctioned.

John O'Neil was IIRC on more appearance money than the weekly wage Fletch has just signed for..

Quite so.

Judas agreed a load of shite deals when he was making his own with the Huns, and all the SPL 8 got shafted by the OF squirming out of an independant TV deal.

I'm no love child of Rodders (seriously mum, I know that) but the fcucking over that Hibs got was not down to Rod, it was down to other ****s who renaged on deals.

Ah fcukit.

Why should I care. he has a dodgy moustache and deserves aeverything he gets.

We might be the bank balance champs of the SPL but if you're happy with one major trophy in a generation Rod's yer man.

PLAYERS SOLD = 8.8 MILLION; PLAYERS BOUGHT = 360,000

I'm maybe missing your point.

Did we take in too much money for players?

We sold players for a decent sum. Market Value.

We paid off a load of debts with that money.

Oh dear.

Oh dear.

Point is though Doc that if we continue to weaken from our starting point we'll get weaker...

Sorry we already have.

Did we take in too much money for those players ? Of course not. I think we should have got a couple of million more for Broonaldo but on the other hand we ripped off the huns as regards Mammy's Boy & Whitty.

Paid off a lot of debts ? Well you could mean Hibernian Football Club ( 90 % shareholders - STF & Rod) paid off debts owing to Hibernian Holdings (proprietors STF & Rod) ?

PLAYERS SOLD = 8.8 MILLION; PLAYERS BOUGHT = 360,000

I see your point Smurf..... but .......

Forget about Hibs for a minute....

If you 'grow talent' for next to nowt and sell it for millions, which is then invested in the club.......

Is that not a bad thing?

Then you have to rely on buying/growing more..... which you sell on.... is that not business?

We ALL want Hibs to succeed, but some of the criticism is just pish.

In my pish opinion obviously.

Aye Pilrig.

Your basic points are fine, but the bold sig (which I guess is a criticism) could also be seen as a plaudit for Rod?

We are third highest payers. (I'm not counting the Gunts because they are Gunts) and we should expect 3rd place in the League or thereabouts.l

Mon the Thirds.

Mon the Thirds.

Not a plaudit for Rod. As a football chairman he's a bloody good accountant.

Mon the Thirds ? Well you know what happened to them ?

now rod, isnt a bit much that you've had to resort tocoming on here to defend yourself. you know you've blown the respect of the fans and this ain't gonna do it for damage limitation....

Mon the Thirds.

IM DISCOUNTING THE GUNTS,but dont believe that for a second, sorry mate but can you show where that is stated.

Putting your point in bold doesn't make it more relevant.

If you look at the performance of the SPL clubs (forget the bigots) over the same period, Rod was fine.

Hibs are in a pretty good position. Which teams in the SPL do you think have done better during that same period?

I'm no Rod fan by the way, I just don't want to buy another sex aid with the wrong name on it.

No.

I cannae be arsed. But if you look you can find it yourself.

Rod has stated it for the record, but if you choose not to believe that then that's up to you.

The OF and the Gunts pay more. Then us.

Would that include our highest paid employee, one Mr. Petrie?:banger:

Do not trust this man Petrie,he does not have any agenda other than maximising his own position......a chancer!

Honestly....... I hate defending the guy....

He is the CX, and the Chairman.

Highest paid?

Probably.

If he maximises Hibs success, so does his own position grow.......

I have no problem with this.

I just don't get the agenda that some have (not you mate) that somehow Rod wants Hibs to fail?

I don't think rod wants hibs to fail. not in a financial sense anyhoo. in a football sense i don't think he could care less. or sir tom. time for them to move on methinks. < check that out.........i reverted to anglo saxon times.....

I think you will find it very unusual at any major football club to have a Chairman/CEO as highest earner.

I believe if you were to poll past board members on their views on Mr Petrie they would not be complimentary.

As for him wanting Hibs to fail I do not believe that,I believe he really does not give a damn !:sad

I don't think it's that unusual at all. Not in Scotland.

I've talked to a few past Board members.
They seemed to agree that Rod is a ****. But that didn't make him bad for Hibs.

To say that Rod doesn't give a damn whether the business that he is a CX and Chairman of fails or not is just a bit of a laugh really, so I guess you are trying to make a point.
I really can't understand this view that someone (Rodders) wants to be a business failure.....

"major football club"

Also I specifically said I did not think he wanted Hibs to fail.

Of course anything that increases his personal position he will want, but not caring or perhaps not understanding the non business side,is why he is incapable of doing the best for Hibs.(hope this clarifies my point!)

That also could be said of STF but thatis another thread.

1 So "major football club" excludes Scotland does it? Fair enough if that's your view.

2 I agreed with you. Seems daft that a CX would want his business to fail eh.

3 As he has a good wedge in Hibs, why would he want the Club to fail..... he is as much a football fan as you and I (just not a Hibs fan :rollfloor) I'm sure he wants Hibs to be successful too.

1.How about major football clubs in Scotland!

2+3.Missing the point........perhaps.:bye

If you had a point, I maybe have missed it.

:doh

Depends whether failing means not winning a cup / qualifying for europe or not posting a healthy balance sheet . One we are good at , the other we are not

True enough.

But Rodders wants to win honours as much (more than?) us be
cause not only does 'his' team win, but his bank balance grows, and his CV gets a wee polish.

We just lose money, in celebration mode.

Well if in his opinion selling 8 million worth of talent and trying to replace it with a fraction of that amount will win us on the pitch honours he is a tit.
I bet he views this as success though

Perhaps slightly off topic this and maybe another thread but there are so many kicking about I can't be bothered to start a new one...

I've just watched the opening of the new training centre on HI and listened to a couple of long-winded speeches from Petrie and Farmer. However, from that it is totally clear that Farmer thinks the sun shines out of Petrie's arse. He seems to give Petrie all the plaudits and Collins was not even invited to help unveil the plaque - just Farmer and Petrie although Collins was right next to them having made a short speech. Okay, in the light of today's events that it's maybe just as well Collins didn't but if it's any indication of what goes on behind the scenes then everyone is seen as second best to the Chief Executive - certainly as far as Farmer is concerned. I suspect Petrie believes in his own hype and has got totally carried away with himself.

Im a selfish bastard, Im only interested in what happens now,I have spent my life supporting a team that has shown promise, won 3 league cups,I want them to win the scottish before I go,Ill let my grandchildren worry About the future, not me.grandpaI dont know you but Id hazard a guess and say you must be under 30,only someone of that age would come out with something like that.

I want them to win the scottish before I go
