Not a name everyone will know, but most will know at least one of his songs. Dennis was the lead singer with Dr Hook. I never knew too much of them apart from a few of their most famous hits, Sylvia's Mother, When you're in love with a beautiful woman, sexy eyes, Sharing the night together and if I said you had a beautiful body (would you hold it against me) amongst their best known. That was until I met my first wife and she had been a fan for years and seen them in concert, as we both did again later.
Dr Hook whilst known for ballads were a truly versatile rock band which could switch to upbeat songs like "you make my pants wanna get up and dance", "Walk right in" and "Baby makes her blue jeans dance" and then they did ridiculous drug induced songs such as "I got stoned and I missed it" and fun songs such as "Millionaire" and then other fun songs in which I will add one at the end.
There are other tear jerkers like "Couple more years and Storms never last", yes I am an old romantic.. Queen of the silver dollar fits in somewhere there too.
I also preferred their version of "Ballad of Lucie Jordan" to Marianne Faithfulls which was written by Shel Silverstein and released first by Dr Hook. Shel wrote quite a few songs for them.
One of their best albums is "Bankrupt", album, which my ex told me they released as a last gasp album while on the verge of quitting through lack of success and money. I don't know if that is true but likely is.
In fact just download "This is Dr Hook" from Spotify as it will cost you nothing more than you pay now..which might be nothing.
There was another co-lead singer in Ray Sawyer who also passed away on Hogmany 2018.
I will leave you with two of my favourites which are very different
The first is Carrie which is a ballad to someone down on their luck, on the video it states "From Shel's houseboat". The reason I picked it is you can clearly see the drug influence before they sing, then watch how they get serious in their music
And this one in the same vain of "everybody's making it big but me", waxes lyrical rather than being skint, as having made it out of the mess they were in but still not getting on the cover of the then iconic Rolling stone magazine, which they did soon after. Ray does most of the singing on this one
Dr Hook and the Medicine Show ~ "Cover of the Rolling Stone"
Enjoy
